<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong> <strong>1988</strong>-89<br />
MARSHALL CLAGETT completed <strong>and</strong> published <strong>the</strong> first volume of Artcient Egyptian<br />
Science: A Source Book <strong>and</strong> worked on <strong>the</strong> volumes that wall follow. His Greek Science<br />
in Antiquity was reprinted with some corrections.<br />
FELLX GILBERT published A European Past: Memoirs 1905-1945 <strong>and</strong> a German edi-<br />
tion entided Lehrjahre im alten Europa: Erinnerungen 1905-1945. He completed a<br />
book of essays on Ranke <strong>and</strong> Burckhardt <strong>and</strong> published articles <strong>and</strong> reviews in<br />
American, German <strong>and</strong> English journals <strong>and</strong> papers.<br />
GEORGE KENNAN'S book. Sketches from a Life, was published by Pan<strong>the</strong>on Press in<br />
<strong>1989</strong>. Professor Kennan testified be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> Senate Foreign Relations Commit-<br />
tee, appeared in televised <strong>and</strong> print interviews, lectured widely <strong>and</strong> published<br />
numerous articles on Gorbachev, Gromyko, contemporary European affairs <strong>and</strong><br />
"<strong>the</strong> German question."<br />
KENNETH M. SETTON completed <strong>the</strong> text of a book on Venice, Austria, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Turks in <strong>the</strong> Seventeenth Century as well as <strong>the</strong> sixth <strong>and</strong> final volume of ^ History<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Crusades, of which he is editor-in-chief His 1956 work, Tlie Byzantine<br />
Background to <strong>the</strong> Italian Renaissance, appeared in Greek translation.<br />
HOMER A. THOMPSON continues to be involved in <strong>the</strong> publication program of <strong>the</strong><br />
excavation of <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian Agora under <strong>the</strong> auspices of <strong>the</strong> American School of<br />
Classical Studies. Three new volumes—one dealing with inscriptions <strong>and</strong> two<br />
with <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>nian courts of law—are now in manuscript, <strong>and</strong> several o<strong>the</strong>r vol-<br />
umes are nearing completion.<br />
MORTON WHITE'S book, Philosophy, "Tlie Federalist, " <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Constitution, was<br />
published in <strong>1987</strong> <strong>and</strong> reprinted as a paperback in <strong>1989</strong>. Articles have appeared<br />
in Rutgers Law Review, Ethics <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> German journal Dialectica. During both<br />
years Professor White served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rutgers Uni-<br />
venity. In September <strong>1989</strong> he participated in a conference on advanced study<br />
sponsored by <strong>the</strong> newly established International Institute <strong>for</strong> Advanced Studies<br />
in Kyoto.<br />
