MICHAEL WALZER'S book, The Company of Critics: Social Criticism and Political Commit-
ment in the Twentieth Century, was published in 1988. In the period covered by diis
report two of his earlier books, Tlw Revolution oftlie Saints and Regidde and Resolution,
appeared in French translation, and an Italian edition of Spheres ofJustice was pub-
lished. He worked on a number of papers dealing with the possibilities of objectivity
in ethics. In 1987-88 he contributed to a British television program on the meaning
of "evil" in contemporary life. He lectured at Rutgers, Johns Hopkins, Brandeis,
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Polytechnic, Queens College, the New School for
Social Research and the University of New Orleans and presented a paper at a con-
ference in Helsinki on "the quality of life." In 1988—89 he spoke about "Two Kinds
of Moral Universalism" at a Mellon Colloquium at Princeton University and pre-
sented the Tanner Lectures at the University of Oxford.
In the academic years 1987-88 and 1988-89 Professor Emeritus albert o.
HIRSCHMAN published articles on economic issues in Latin America, on general
economic history and theory and on conservative ideologies and rhetoric in the
19th and 20th centuries. An article that was published in The Atlantic in May
1989 picked up themes explored in earlier lectures in Ann Arbor, Paris and
Munich. One of his books. Getting Ahead Collectively, appeared in Portuguese
translation. Volumes containing selections from his writings were published in
Italy and Germany. He served as a member of the Executive Panel on Social
Welfare organized by the Ford Foundation and on the Twentieth Century
Fund's Task Force on International Debt. He received honorary degrees from
universities in Paris, Berlin, Turin and New York.
