MICHAEL WALZER'S book, The Company of Critics: Social Criticism <strong>and</strong> Political Commit-<br />
ment in <strong>the</strong> Twentieth Century, was published in <strong>1988</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> period covered by diis<br />
report two of his earlier books, Tlw Revolution oftlie Saints <strong>and</strong> Regidde <strong>and</strong> Resolution,<br />
appeared in French translation, <strong>and</strong> an Italian edition of Spheres ofJustice was pub-<br />
lished. He worked on a number of papers dealing with <strong>the</strong> possibilities of objectivity<br />
in ethics. In <strong>1987</strong>-88 he contributed to a British television program on <strong>the</strong> meaning<br />
of "evil" in contemporary life. He lectured at Rutgers, Johns Hopkins, Br<strong>and</strong>eis,<br />
Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Polytechnic, Queens College, <strong>the</strong> New School <strong>for</strong><br />
Social Research <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of New Orleans <strong>and</strong> presented a paper at a con-<br />
ference in Helsinki on "<strong>the</strong> quality of life." In <strong>1988</strong>—89 he spoke about "Two Kinds<br />
of Moral Universalism" at a Mellon Colloquium at Princeton University <strong>and</strong> pre-<br />
sented <strong>the</strong> Tanner Lectures at <strong>the</strong> University of Ox<strong>for</strong>d.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong> <strong>1988</strong>-89 Professor Emeritus albert o.<br />
HIRSCHMAN published articles on economic issues in Latin America, on general<br />
economic history <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> on conservative ideologies <strong>and</strong> rhetoric in <strong>the</strong><br />
19th <strong>and</strong> 20th centuries. An article that was published in The Atlantic in May<br />
<strong>1989</strong> picked up <strong>the</strong>mes explored in earlier lectures in Ann Arbor, Paris <strong>and</strong><br />
Munich. One of his books. Getting Ahead Collectively, appeared in Portuguese<br />
translation. Volumes containing selections from his writings were published in<br />
Italy <strong>and</strong> Germany. He served as a member of <strong>the</strong> Executive Panel on Social<br />
Welfare organized by <strong>the</strong> Ford Foundation <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Twentieth Century<br />
Fund's Task Force on International Debt. He received honorary degrees from<br />
universities in Paris, Berlin, Turin <strong>and</strong> New York.<br />
