Second Grade Library and Technology Skills Library Skills • Develop a knowledge of LMC procedures, an awareness of types of materials available, proper care of materials, and appropriate behavior. • Develop the ability to independently check out own materials. • Have the opportunity to utilize the LMC on a daily basis. • Develop an understanding of the difference between fiction and nonfiction and be able to locate Easy/Everybody and Fiction Chapter books by the last name of the author and nonfiction books with assistance. • Develop the ability to locate materials and/or information in the following areas in the LMC: Easy/Everybody, Fiction, Nonfiction, Biography, current magazines, dictionaries, and reference materials. • Become familiar with these non book materials: audiovisual materials, charts, maps, posters, transparencies, computer software. • Understand the concepts of author, title, illustrator. • Identify the basic parts of a book: cover (front/back), dust cover, spine, spine label, pages, title page (author, title, illustrator, publisher), copyright page. • Become aware of the importance of the patron catalog. • Practice paraphrasing / retelling stories and instructional events. • Develop beginning dictionary skills using a picture and primary dictionary. Technology Skills • Identify and learn appropriate use of physical components of a computer system (monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, printer). • Demonstrate safe and responsible use of a computer. • Select and apply menu commands. • Open and close a program. • Learn the function of a mouse. • Recognize and apply the function of the tool icons. • Learn to insert, remove, and care for a floppy disk. • Participate in a formal keyboarding sequence • Demonstrate the ability to independently check out items from the LMC using the online circulation system. • Learn the purpose and value of technology equipment • Create, name and save a new document to disk and/or server. • Open an existing document. • Format characters: Font, size, color. • Select text. • Undo command. • Scroll through a document. • Delete text. • Insert text. • Save changes (early and often). • Print a document.
• Use appropriate software and hardware independently and collaboratively to support learning across the curriculum. • In a teacher-directed group lesson, students will record data and use gathered information in an age appropriate activity. (LO#2) • Students will move independently through a simulation program for the purpose of introduction, reinforcement, enrichment, and mastery of basic skills. (LO#2,3,4) • Demonstrate the ability to search online for a book by title, author, and subject. (LO#2,3) • Determine location and availability of desired material. (LO#2) • Search an online resource (encyclopedia, SIRS, Internet) for specific information. (LO#5,6) • Create a product that uses data collected from a variety of resources. (LO#6) • Create a slide show presentation. (LO#5,6) • Type word lists, sentences, paragraphs, and stories. (LO#5,6) • Create a narrative, an expository, and a persuasive paragraph in a word processing document. (LO #5,6)
