Indian Prairie School District Library Media Center Vision Statement The library media center (LMC) program is a critical component of the educational program of all Indian Prairie Schools. Through the instructional activities, resources, facilities, and technologies provided in the program, students and staff become effective and efficient users and creators of ideas and information. (Linking for Learning. ISLMA 2005) Robert Clow Elementary School LMC Program Components Our library media center program plays an essential role in the Clow learning community. The most important component in the program is the student. It is for our students that we: ♦ Circulate materials. The Clow School LMC offers computerized access to a professionally selected and organized collection of resources, representing a wide range of subjects, levels, interests and mediums. ♦ Integrate library and information skills into the curriculum. The LMC director and classroom teacher plan and teach cooperatively to reinforce, remediate and enrich classroom instruction, integrating and promoting library skills, information skills and resources. ♦ Integrate technology. The Elementary Technology Curriculum promotes technology as an instructional tool for students individually, cooperatively, and in large groups. Students learn to respect and utilize the technology at Clow, to apply technological skills to locate, gather, and create information and after processing it, to apply technology to present the knowledge they have gained in the form of a product. ♦ Promote reading as a lifelong habit. The LMC director works cooperatively with classroom teachers to encourage a balanced reading curriculum for all students as well as to plan a variety of schoolwide reading incentive programs. Prescribed activities support and encourage reading throughout the year, promoting lifelong reading for pleasure. ♦ Foster student-centered learning. The LMC director in collaboration with the classroom teacher develops lessons based on a student-centered learning approach. The District’s research model is employed which guides students in the acquisition and use of information, resulting in a product that demonstrates their learning.
Roles of a District #204 LMC Director Teacher • Information literacy is taught as an integral part of the content areas of the school's curriculum and includes instruction in accessing, evaluating, and communicating information and in the production of media. • Library media specialists and teachers jointly plan, teach, and evaluate instruction in information access, use and communication skills. • Assistance is provided in the use of technology to access information inside and outside the library media center. • Staff members are offered learning opportunities related to new technologies, as well as in the use and production of a variety of media, laws and policies regarding information. • Library media specialists use a variety of instructional methods with different user groups and model the effective use of newer media and technologies. Instructional Consultant Library media specialists: • Participate in building, district, department, and grade-level curriculum development and assessment projects on a regular basis. • Offer teachers assistance in using information resources, acquiring instructional materials, and incorporating information skills into the classroom curriculum. • Use a systematic instructional development process in working with teachers to improve instructional activities. • Provide leadership in the assessment, evaluation, and implementation of information and instructional technologies. Information Specialist • Library media specialists make resources available to students and teachers through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school. • Access to the library media center collection is provided by a retrieval system that uses expansive searching capabilities. • Students receive assistance in identifying, locating, and interpreting information housed in and outside the library media center. • Students and teachers have access to the LMC and to qualified professional staff throughout the school day. Class visits are scheduled flexibly to encourage instruction and use at point of need. • Policies and procedures ensure that student access to information is not impeded by fees, loan restrictions, or online searching charges. • Teachers, students, parents, and administrators are informed of new materials, equipment, and services that meet their information needs. • Students at remote sites are provided access to information.
