Introduction<br />

<strong>Kumasi</strong> lies at a significant transport<br />

intersection <strong>for</strong> both <strong>Ghana</strong> and the<br />

wider region.<br />

Much of <strong>Ghana</strong>’s primary road network<br />

interchanges at <strong>Kumasi</strong> and consequently<br />

the city experiences a substantial volume<br />

of transient people and vehicles.<br />

Current and planned infrastructure<br />

projects such as the outer ring road,<br />

airport up-grade and inland port are aimed<br />

at both rein<strong>for</strong>cing <strong>Kumasi</strong>’s prominence in<br />

<strong>Ghana</strong>’s transport network and alleviating<br />

the pressures created by this role.<br />

The opportunity<br />

With its relatively well-developed road<br />

network and port infrastructure, <strong>Ghana</strong><br />

acts a conduit <strong>for</strong> significant volumes of<br />

trade and associated people and services<br />

to and from neighbouring countries.<br />

As the ancient capital of the Ashanti<br />

kingdom, <strong>Kumasi</strong> is effectively the cultural<br />

centre of <strong>Ghana</strong> alongside providing an<br />

appealing natural environment.<br />

<strong>Kumasi</strong> holds considerable tourist appeal<br />

in its own right with key cultural, historical<br />

and natural beauty sites such as the<br />

Manhyia Royal Palace, the craft villages<br />

and Lake Bosomtwe.<br />

<strong>Kumasi</strong> is also conveniently located as<br />

a stopover <strong>for</strong> tourists following the<br />

North-South slave route.<br />

<strong>Kumasi</strong> is in a strong position to capitalise<br />

on both commercial and domestic visitors<br />

as well as to generate increased tourist<br />

traffic. In order to achieve these goals<br />

there is a need to improve accommodation<br />

and related visitor facilities.<br />
