The Confucius Institute at Portland State University (CIPSU) is pleased to announce <strong>the</strong> <strong>2013</strong><br />

<strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>Speech</strong>, <strong>Composition</strong>, Calligraphy & Talent Contests to be held on Sunday, May 19th at<br />

PSU. Specific arrangements and rules of participation are as follows:<br />

<strong>Composition</strong>, <strong>Pen</strong> & <strong>Brush</strong>-<strong>Pen</strong> Calligraphy Contests *<br />

1. Deadline for registration and submitting compositions and calligraphy works for<br />

<strong>2013</strong> <strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>Speech</strong>, <strong>Composition</strong>, Calligraphy & Talent Contests: April 30,<br />

<strong>2013</strong><br />

Please send your composition in <strong>Chinese</strong> characters in <strong>the</strong> Word format via<br />

email to: cipsu@pdx.edu; please send <strong>the</strong> calligraphy works to:<br />

2. Eligibility of Participation: Anyone studying <strong>Chinese</strong> as a second/foreign<br />

language or in a <strong>Chinese</strong> immersion program can sign up for <strong>the</strong> contests.<br />

Contestants will be grouped into: Group A (for K2-5 grades students), Group B (for<br />

K6-8 grades students), Group C (for K9-12 grades students) and Group D (for<br />

college and graduate students and adults).<br />

4. Requirements for <strong>the</strong> composition contest:<br />

1) The composition is limited to 300-500 characters (for Groups A & B) and 500-<br />

800 characters (for Group C and D)<br />

2) Grading method/criterion: 30% for meaningful content, 30% for sentence<br />

structure, 20% for choice of words and 20% for <strong>Chinese</strong> characters.<br />

<strong>Speech</strong> Contest:<br />

1. Time for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>Speech</strong> Contest: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, May 19, <strong>2013</strong><br />

(Sunday)<br />

2. Venue of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Speech</strong> Contest: Classrooms in PSU School of Business Building.<br />

The opening and awarding ceremony will be held in SBA 190 (631 SW Harrison<br />

Street, Portland OR 97201). Rooms for each group’s contest will be assigned at <strong>the</strong><br />

opening ceremony.<br />

3. Participants please fill in <strong>the</strong> attached registration form and send it by email to:<br />

cipsu@pdx.edu before April 30, <strong>2013</strong> or drop off to <strong>the</strong> CIPSU’s office by 5:00 PM<br />

on April 30 th (632 SW Hall Street, Room 306, Portland, OR 97201)<br />

4. Eligibility of Participation: Anyone studying <strong>Chinese</strong> as a second/foreign<br />

language or in a <strong>Chinese</strong> immersion program can sign up for <strong>the</strong> contests.<br />

Contestants will be grouped into: Group A (for K2-5 grades students), Group B (for


K6-8 grades students), Group C (for K9-12 grades students) and Group D (for<br />

college and graduate students and adults).<br />

5. Requirements for <strong>the</strong> speeches contest:<br />

1) Each speech contestant must deliver a speech on one of <strong>the</strong> following topics for<br />

no longer than 4 minutes in Standard Putonghua <strong>Chinese</strong> with<br />

correct pronunciation, tones and fair fluency. Due attention should also be paid<br />

to speech manners.<br />

2) A panel of judges consisting of 3-5 native <strong>Chinese</strong> language teachers will be<br />

formed to select winners of <strong>the</strong> 1st (1 winner), 2nd (2 winners) and 3 rd (3<br />

winners) places for each group based on scores each contestant obtains.<br />

show. The talent show includes, but is not limited to, singing, playing musical<br />

instruments, dancing, magic performance, on-site painting/drawing, etc.<br />

6. Certificates of winning will be issued and awards will be given to contest winners.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> participants will each be given a souvenir.<br />

7. Each contestants can participate in one or more contests, i.e., speech, writing,<br />

calligraphy, talent show etc.<br />
