International Visiting Professor
(IVP) Program
Portland State University Department Application
For over thirty years PSU has invited professors from across the globe to share their
knowledge and international perspectives on a wide-range of subjects each summer.
The IVP program is a prestigious program designed to bring professors from outside the
United States to our campus to teach, provide lectures, and engage in community and
professional organizations and associations. Participants contribute to the PSU motto:
“Let Knowledge Serve the City,” enriching our campus through innovative educational
offerings and contributing to the diversity for which our campus is known.
2011 IVP Program
Submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1. How do the courses and lectures taught by the prospective IVP enhance and
contribute to PSU global engagement. Successful applications will provide specific
examples.
2. Proposal’s perceived enhancement of PSU course offerings and contribution to the
continued globalization of the campus.
3. Capacity for the hosting department to actively engage the prospective IVP in
community learning activities during the teaching period of the IVP at PSU.
Completed applications should be returned to the Office of International Affairs by
January 27, 2011.
2011 IVP Program Application
IVP Benefits
Selected participants receive the basic adjunct salary for teaching from Summer
Session. Additionally, IVP participants are provided funding for international travel to
Portland (travel awards are greater for participants who teach two courses in the
Summer Session), local housing identification assistance, invitations to lectures and
community events and the IVP reception and other accommodations. IVPs who teach
two four-credit courses during the Summer Session will receive full international airfare
reimbursement and IVPs who teach one four-credit course will receive half international
airfare reimbursement.
Special note: The IVP program is a selective program. IVPs selected to the program are
expected to teach their proposed courses, provide community lectures, participate in professional
meetings and engage actively in the Portland community. PSU hosts international scholars on
campus every month of the year; the IVP complements this programming.
Departments not wishing to nominate prospective international professors to the IVP program
may also invite international professors to teach in the Summer Session as they do during the
regular academic year.
Departments may work directly with Summer Session in this regard. Individuals who are selected
to teach in the Summer Session outside of the IVP program do not receive special housing or
travel assistance, invitation to lecture in the Tour the World, or participate in the community
engagement component of the IVP Program. In any case the Office of International Affairs will
work with PSU departments to provide visa assistance if an invited professor needs international
assistance as OIA does throughout the year with our J-1 visiting scholar program. For
information on the customary process for hosting an international visitor, please see the OIA
website at http://oia.pdx.edu/departments/hiring/j-1_scholars/.
