<strong>Shiseido</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Commence</strong> <strong>Cosmetics</strong> <strong>Sales</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong><br />

<strong>Shiseido</strong> will commence sales <strong>in</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> from Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2010 and proceed with bus<strong>in</strong>ess expansion <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a new<br />

market.<br />

<strong>Shiseido</strong>’s products, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g its luxury global brand SHISEIDO makeup and sk<strong>in</strong>care l<strong>in</strong>es available worldwide,<br />

will be marketed through a distribu<strong>to</strong>r, Prestige Ltd., which has a proven track record <strong>in</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g luxury cosmetics <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Georgia</strong>, along with deploy<strong>in</strong>g its market<strong>in</strong>g capabilities cultivated over many years ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> European markets.<br />

With this latest endeavor, <strong>Shiseido</strong> overseas cosmetic sales will encompass 78 countries and regions (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Japan) throughout the world, <strong>in</strong> which 44 countries are <strong>in</strong> the European region. This marks the first entry of a<br />

Japanese cosmetics brand <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the <strong>Georgia</strong>n market.<br />

Background <strong>to</strong> Mak<strong>in</strong>g Inroads<br />

<strong>Shiseido</strong> is currently promot<strong>in</strong>g its Three-Year Plan, which was executed <strong>in</strong> 2008 <strong>in</strong> seek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> become “a global<br />

player represent<strong>in</strong>g Asia with its orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Japan.” Among its overseas bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>Shiseido</strong> is focus<strong>in</strong>g on “expansion<br />

of operations <strong>in</strong> new markets” and “strengthen<strong>in</strong>g of operat<strong>in</strong>g bases <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g markets” as key thrusts. <strong>Shiseido</strong> is<br />

also actively pursu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>roads <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> new markets <strong>in</strong> 2010, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Mongolia from the end of May and three Balkan<br />

Pen<strong>in</strong>sula countries, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with Albania <strong>in</strong> July followed by Kosovo and Macedonia, respectively, from August<br />

and September.<br />

Background <strong>to</strong> Commenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Sales</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong><br />

<strong>Georgia</strong> is one of the Newly Independent States (NIS)* that is geographically situated at the juncture between Europe<br />

and Southwest Asia. It is bounded by Russia via the Caucasus mounta<strong>in</strong> range runn<strong>in</strong>g along its northern border, the<br />

eastern coast of the Black Sea <strong>to</strong> the west and the countries of Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan <strong>to</strong> the south. In<br />

ancient times, <strong>Georgia</strong> was an important transit po<strong>in</strong>t for the many people and goods along the Silk Road. At the<br />

present day, <strong>Georgia</strong> is play<strong>in</strong>g a central role as a crucial conduit for crude oil and natural gas pipel<strong>in</strong>es. At the<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of 2010, signs become apparent that <strong>Georgia</strong>’s real economic growth rate was once aga<strong>in</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g, with the<br />

cosmetics market <strong>in</strong> particular show<strong>in</strong>g a 15% <strong>in</strong>crease versus the previous year. Together with the stabilization of its<br />

economic foundation, the demand for prestige cosmetic products is expected <strong>to</strong> expand <strong>in</strong> the future. In view of this<br />

outlook, <strong>Shiseido</strong> thus made the decision <strong>to</strong> commence sales <strong>in</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>.<br />

Among NIS countries, <strong>Georgia</strong> will be the fifth country <strong>in</strong> which <strong>Shiseido</strong> cosmetic products are sold. Previously,<br />

sales were launched <strong>in</strong> Russia from 1998, Ukra<strong>in</strong>e and Kazakhstan from 2002 and Azerbaijan from 2009.<br />
