SHOW JUMPING
Since the last programme and my
usual long report, nobody has really
shown any interest over the winter
in making up teams for the various
competitions that Jane has posted on
the PC Website. The most I ever had
wanting to sign up for a particular
competition was two, so not
enough for a team even if they wanted
to jump the same class!
Hopefully spring and some warmer
weather is on its way and you will
all un rug those ponies and want to
bring them out to play again so that
we can have another successful
summer like last year! I will be starting
show jumping training at
Chadbury at the beginning of April,
weather and light permitting, on
Wednesday evenings ,probably starting
on the 4th ,so contact me to
book your slot asap so that I can
arrange suitable groups.
Below is a list of competition dates
for April onwards. The list is as I
have it now but keep watching our
PC web page for other dates which
Mrs Ogle will post as she receives
them. I will not be texting to remind

you of every competition so it is up
to you to let me know if you wish to
but put in the teams. Keep a watch
on the schedules on the website
and either text or ring me to let me
know which classes you would like
to enter and on which pony(some of

Dear Members, Parents and Friends,
I am writing this having just returned
from a great training session at
Somerford Park with fifteen pony club
members, including four from other
branches. The facilities there are truly
excellent, the weather was kind and
our members all acquitted themselves
really well. There is a new Facebook
page for Croome and this is somewhere
you can post photos and
thoughts - I will be monitoring any
comment though.
The programme has been really
delayed due to the last month having
been really nectic with the very successful
Tetrathlon held at Teal Farm
by kind invitation of the Lole family at
the lovely setting their home provides,
the Awards Evening where Mrs
McIvor again created a wonderful setting,
the PA show jumping at Hartpury
and then three rallies over four days
at Easter followed by the trip to
Somerford Park. Commiserations to
Rosie Millichap who sadly sustained a
broken collarbone at the Teal Farm XC
rally - we all wish her a speedy recovery!
Apart from this all these events
went really well and my thanks go to
all who have contributed in any way to
their running and success. I have tried
to keep information posted on the
website and apologise to the discipline
managers who wrote their reports

Letter
when requested and are now busy
with the training sessions.
Early in March Mrs Ogle and I represented
our branch at the Annual
Pony Club Conference which was held
for the first time in Belfast. The conference
is a reminder of what Pony
Club is about and why we are all
involved with what is one of the largest
youth charities and the largest association
of riders in the world. There are
branches in 27 countries and the
membership exceeds 110,000. Our
patron, the Princess Royal addressed
the conference along with other
speakers and was at pains to point
out how many of our top riders and
Olympic hopefuls started their equestrian
career in the Pony Club and the
message was one of praise for the
work done by the organisation. The
Princess and the chairman of training
and the President all stressed that
Pony Club should educate and be fun
in a safe environment and we were
also told never to underestimate the
partnership between horse and rider
and to encourage our members to
spend as much time just being with
our ponies and horses to learn their
likes and dislikes and to understand
and recognise their body language.
Not everyone has their horses at
home but I would urge you to take this
advice and learn as much as you can
about your horse by grooming and just
spending time with them - you will find
it hugely rewarding!
The winter months were fairly quiet
on the Pony Club front but the team
social event at The Lenches Club in
February went very well and the beach
ride was a great success with members,
parents and friends! We are
planning another visit in October! We
also had a great Christmas Party at
Moorend Farm when Santa arrived in
a horse drawn sleigh and gave the
children all a turn around the school.
The Tetrathlon teams have been both
busy and successful and the local
press have picked up on this and given
us some great publicity. Harry Sykes
success and hard work was recognised
in the autumn when he was
voted the Hereford and Worcester
Junior Sports Personality for his swimming
and tetrathlon success and I am
sure you join with me in offering our
congratulations.
This programme runs up to
October and we hope there will be
something for everyone! Pony Club is
not all about competition and we hope
you will also enjoy the fun and social
events we have planned. I am looking
forward to the warmer weather, to
the summer Area Competitions and
most of all to Camp where I so enjoy
seeing you all learning, playing and
having that all important fun with your
horses and ponies. All of you will
achieve personal goals and successes
in so many ways and we love to hear
all of them so keep the emails and
messages coming with your news.
Much information about competitions
etc is now available on the website
but please remember to let your
team managers know when you are
competing and how you get on as this
helps with selection and also because
they are interested! If you enter any
competition let the relevant manager
know as there may be other members
who can make up a team
I hope to see many of you at rallies,
competitions and other events over
the summer - keep sending me your
results and news and I know you will
continue to make me proud of our
branch wherever you represent it!

As you all know, Pony Club hat tags must now be applied to prove your hat has been checked and each branch is supoposed to
check it’s own members so that you may not be allowed to compete if you arrive at an event without the necessary tag. Mrs Icke
is our official “tagger”and she would be grateful if you would ring her to make arrangements to get your hat checked if you are a
new member or you have a new hat.
Pony Club rules only allow the following hats:

Ventilation Slits in Riding Hats: permitted size 3cm x 1cm
Hair Nets are not a beauty accessory and they are worn both to keep your hair tidy and safe. They form part of correct riding
dress and should be worn at all rallies and practices even if your hair is tied back. Long hair should be doubled up to at least collar
length. The committee reserve the right to hand out hairnets and impose a charge/fine to anyone not properly dressed.

EVENTING UPDATE
Having run a couple of training sessions
in the Autumn at Karen
Nicholas's yard at Bromyard we then
moved to Sandbourne where a core
group of twelve to sixteen members
attended regular sessions with Karen
on a Tuesday evening through
January, February and March and
ended with an evening XC schooling
session at Sapey.
We are trying to keep the web
page updated with clinics and
schedules and hope to enter teams
at some forthcoming PC events. We
look to have a good core of members
working towards Novice level
as well as the Intermediate and
Open and Karen has agreed to carry
on with Tuesday evening training
during May and June covering flatwork,
SJ and more XC. There are
also SJ and Dressage sessions on
offer from Mrs Weaving and Mrs
Fairclough so there are lots of opportunities
to improve.
Event training sessions are open
to all and Bryony Wilson has agreed
to take sessions for mini and junior
eventers who are keen, so please do
contact either of us if you want to
take part.

One Day Event and you should have
a proper fittening and feeding programme
in place.

Adverse Weather Conditions: We will make every
effort to post a notice on the website where a rally or event
has to be cancelled and we will try to contact you if at all
possible. Contact Mrs Roberts on her mobile if you are
unsure but generally if you haven’t heard anything the event
will be going ahead. If the rally is going ahead and you decide
not to come then you should expect to be invoiced.

Second Hand Tack and Riding Clothes
Mrs Julia Gillett has done a splendid job dealing with second hand tack and riding clothes but she needs to retire! This is a great
service to those looking for kit and to those selling - 10% of the sales proceeds goes to Pony Club and 90% is returned to you. We
would like to keep this service going and so we are LOOKING FOR A VOLUNTEER!!
Please contact Mrs Roberts if you can take this on.
Rally Information
BOOKING-IN-DEADLINE IS NOW 10 DAYS.
Please return all rally slips to Mrs Roberts, either by post or by
e-mail at least 10 days before the rally so that correct instruction
can be arranged. No receipts will be issued.
THE NAMES OF ALL THOSE BOOKED IN WILL BE LISTED
ON THE WEBSITE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE 10 DAY
CUT OFF SO, IF YOU CAN ACCESS A COMPUTER, YOU WILL
BE ABLE TO CHECK MRS ROBERTS HAS RECEIVED YOUR SLIP
AND CONTACT HER IF THERE ARE ANY QUERIES.
We operate the ten day rule strictly and anyone booking in
after the ten day deadline will be put on a waiting list and must
telephone Mrs. Roberts the evening before hand to see if a place
has become available.
IF YOU PREFER YOU MAY SEND PAYMENT WITH
RALLY SLIPS!
You can post them or e-mail as this is a convenient way to send
slips in. Times may be posted on the web site or, where stated,
you must telephone for times at the specified time and failure to
do so will mean that your place may be given to someone on the
waiting list. Please give plenty of notice if you are unable to
attend and we reserve the right to charge for missed rallies if
necessary.
If the weather is bad and the rallies might be cancelled please
ring Mrs Roberts (01386 871094/07979 528072) on the morning
of the rally to confirm.
It is very difficult working out rides and instruction and we
cannot therefore arrange for you to be at any specific venue,
although consideration will be given as far as possible to those
travelling together. It is difficult to find venues at all for winter rallies
and we are lucky to have the venues we do.
Please arrive at rallies at least twenty minutes before your time
and be mounted ten minutes before the start time to ensure a full
session with your instructor. Wait quietly whilst waiting for the
instruction to start, there is no need to trot and canter round.
Pony Club ties and riding jackets must be worn for working
rallies.
Cross country rallies require body protectors with Pony Club
sweatshirts or cross country colours with long sleeves.
Please park considerately, particularly where there are neighbours
who could be inconvenienced, and ensure that none of our hosts
have cause to complain by taking all litter home and not mucking
out lorries or trailers on site or leave any droppings behind.
Whilst every effort is made to place members in compatible rides,
occasionally mistakes are made or, out of necessity, rides may be
of mixed ages and abilities, depending on numbers. Please bear
in mind that the instructors will be made aware of this and are
able to teach the ride accordingly, ensuring that each member is
either challenged or alternatively not asked to do anything above
their ability.
Will parents please not accompany the ride their child is in
unless the child needs to be on a lead rein or, in
exceptional circumstances; permission is sought in advance from
the DC. Watching, from a discreet distance, is obviously fine.
Medical Armbands are compulsory for anyone riding Cross
Country and must be worn at all cross-country rallies and training
sessions. These can be obtained from Mrs Roberts at a cost of
£3.50.
Body protectors should be brought to rallies and MUST be
worn when jumping cross-country. We strongly recommend their
use for show-jumping.
Spurs may only be used if the DC has given prior permission
by signing your membership card. Our Chief Instructor, Sara
Turner will be responsible for assessing your competency to use
spurs and Mrs Roberts will only sign the card after such an assessment.
If you want to be assessed remember to ask
early in the season.

Dressage
Dressage practice is currently been
held every Monday evening at
Moorend Farm. It's been great to be
able go to Moorend & be inside for
the dark nights & potentially bad
weather. The location may change
from Easter onwards, as I am waiting
to weigh up what the weather to
decide whether to try and stay on a
surface or swap to grass which is
what we are all expected to compete
on for all area disciplines. It is really
important that you train your horse
on the type of surface you expect to
compete on, so that the horse is able
to adapt their way of going and not
fall over in a heap going around a
slippery corner. I do understand that
for those of you who don't have a
menage, the chance to be able to
really work your horse and not have
to worry about the hard ground is
equally important.
Vet’s Corner
Five of our members represented
our club at the recent Cheltenham
RC team competition. Although we
didn't come in the prizes it was a
useful start of the season outing & a
chance to dust off those competition
boots. Many thanks to Sophie

Ogle (who sadly could not get there
on the day- yet no doubt still put the
hours of practice in!)
On 5th April we had the opportunity
to go to Talland School of
Lameness by Anne Gibbs BVSc BSc MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon.

school masters. This was a great
opportunity and was enjoyed by the
two groups of members and the parents
group! Group lessons were for
45mins for £27 (pony club rate) with
Charlie or Brian Hutton. We may
repeat this trip on another occasion
so PLEASE let me know if you would
be interested in joining in.
Dressage practice has started with a
new format! One hour group lessons
from 5pm at Moorend Farm at a cost
of £10 per person. Dressage practice
is open to all, so you can phone,
text, email, or Facebook me if you
would like to come along. Area dressage
will be here before we know it
(July 25th) and dressage needs to be
practiced and perfected so the earlier
you start working at it, the more
rewarding it will be!

Spring is in the air and warm sunny days often inspire us to start increasing our horse's workload either for the competition
season, or simply to make the most of the extra daylight hours.
For these reasons it is a common time to notice mild lameness. If this happens to your horse or pony it is a good idea to
get a vet involved from the start.
In many cases it is fairly common to start with a trial of anti-inflammatories and box rest as long as infection can be ruled
out. Bute is the most widely used anti-inflammatory drug in the country but don't forget it is a potent medication capable of
masking significant pain.
Minor injuries are easily resolved with rest and a course course of medication, but if this isn't the case, then we would
recommend a lameness work up to enable us to give a more specific diagnosis and prediction of prognosis.
A lameness workshop involves going back over the horses history in detail as well as observing gait both in a straight line
and on a circle. Sometimes seeing a horse ridden can be helpful, but all observations require facilities conductive to the job
i.e a flat level hard surface for trotting up and a flat field or school for lunging. If you do not have such facilities we can
always arrange to hire them for you.
Lameness workups start at the foot and work upwards remembering the old saying 'no foot no horse'. Flexion tests are
useful, as are nerve blocks. Definitive answers are more likely now in view of diagnostic developments such as MRI, which
gives us a 3D image of the foot. These techniques can be £1-2000 and thus we would recommend insuring your horse!
In many cases, treatment options have not kept up with diagnostic advancements, but knowing the point and severity of
injury allows a rest and rehab programme to be finely tuned giving the horse the best possible chance of return to full athletic
performance.

those received from other pony clubs, riding clubs and independent shows) are put on the Schedules page of
the Croome P.C. website - details are constantly being added to the Schedules Page and , especially at this
time of year, it is worth checking at least once or twice a week for any new events.
Please remember to check with the appropriate discipline manager to check whether they are entering
Croome teams for the event you are interested in and if you compete independently please let them know how
you get on - whatever level you are competing at.

TETRATHLON
REPORT
Croome tetrathlon competitors have continued with
successes through the winter at various triathlon competitions.
For those of you who don't know, Tetrathlons finish
in September ,but Triathlons are held through the winter
period dropping the riding phase. This helps to keep athletes
on form when it is more difficult to hold cross country
events with our ponies and horses - it is also a great
way to keep up the Team spirit.
Croome competitors are always in the placings - often
in the top 3 - and have become renowned within
tetrathlon competitions for being quite a 'force to be
reckoned with'. We competed at the North Cotswold,
North Shropshire, Curre, The Elms, The Cotswold Vale,
Monmouth, VWH & Warwickshire Triathlons with too
many successes to mention individuals.
At the beginning of March we held a one day training
session at Lincomb where about 18 members attended
running and shooting practices and 10 braved the winter
flurries on the cross-country course. Luckily, there was a
marquee up for us to keep dry for the lunchtime BBQ! It
was great to see some new faces having a go and hopefully
now you've had a taste of what fun we have, you'll
come along to some competitions too.
On the 17th/18th March we held our own Tetrathlon
competition at Teal Farm, by kind invitation of Mr & Mrs
Lole with the swimming event taking place at Pershore
Leisure Centre. The Sunday, when we were holding the
XC, running and shooting, s tarted off very cold and

cloudy, but the sun shone in the afternoon to warm
everyone up! We had over 90 entries from a wide variety
of Pony Clubs, many out of our area, and entries were
partucularly strong in the younger classes where Elsa
Bishop and Maeghan Brown competed in their first ever
Tadpole tetrathlons. Good performances from Bill Bishop
and Emily Turner in the mini's gave them 1st & 3rd places
respectively, which gave them a 2nd team place for the
Croome. In the juniors Toby Alliband came 2nd with top
shoot, run AND swim and in the Intermediates we managed
a 1st Team with Harry Sykes gettng a 1st place (with
top shoot, swim & run), Katie Caldicott coming 3rd and
Chris Lole getting a 5th Individual placing. Katie also got
a top shoot score for the girls.
Successes are as a result of regular training and once
again I'd like to encourage anyone interested in tetrathlon
to attend the training sessions available as often as
possible
Swimming sessions continue at New College, Worcester
at 7.00 every Friday and Mr Saunders is still organizing
fortnightly shooting practice at Teal Farm - please contact
him to be put on the schedule if you are interested.
