<strong>Mercury</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Fish</strong><br />

<strong>Fish</strong> purchased at the various sites around<br />

West Bengal had a higher overall average<br />

mercury content, 0.458 mg/kg. Eight of the<br />

mercury levels above 1.0 mg/kg, while 25<br />

exceeded 0.50 mg/kg, though these averages<br />

were often based on just two samples from a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle site. Sitapati (Trichurus sp., a type of<br />

more than one location also had relatively<br />

low levels of mercury, below 0.20 mg/kg.<br />

The most strik<strong>in</strong>g aspect of the results was the<br />

very marked difference <strong>in</strong> average mercury<br />

locations. <strong>Fish</strong> bought <strong>in</strong> Jharkhali conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

on average <strong>1.45</strong>2 mg/kg of mercury, and 100<br />

percent of the 16 samples (all eight species)<br />

from that location exceeded 0.50 mg/kg.<br />

<strong>Fish</strong> from three other locations had average<br />

mercury levels of 0.563 to 0.711 mg/kg.<br />

The highest average mercury levels were<br />

estuar<strong>in</strong>e areas.<br />
