In Attendance: Scott Baker (Chair), Jerry Dias, Steven Driever, Leah Gensheimer,<br />

LaShawna Harris, Dan McIntosh, Jim Sheppard, Anthony Shiu<br />

I. Course Proposals<br />

Physical/Natural Sciences 130, “Physics of Sports.” Proposal was untabled, revisions,<br />

considered, and course was unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Physical/Natural Sciences 171, “Physics for Future Presidents.” Proposal was untabled,<br />

revision of course number from “172” to “171” was considered, and course was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Physics 437/5537, “Particle Physics.” Proposal was untabled; course description and<br />

graduate student assignments revisions were considered, and course was unanimously<br />

approved by committee.<br />

Statistics 5588, “Theory of Linear Model.” Course was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee pending revision of “constrains” to “constraints” in the catalog description.<br />

Environmental Studies 350, “Applied Ecology.” Course was unanimously approved by<br />

the committee pending revision of “GEOL 3xx” to “ENVS 350” in the catalog<br />

description.<br />

Environmental Studies 450/5550, “Ecotoxicology.” The proposal elicited a question<br />

concerning the lack of Organic Chemistry as a prerequisite; it was determined that the<br />

advanced mathematics in the course will be the main issue to be addressed when teaching<br />

the course given the present math prerequisite of MATH 110 for the CHEM 211<br />

prerequisite. Course was unanimously approved by the committee pending revision of<br />

“GEOL 4xx” to “ENVS 450” in the catalog description.<br />

English 270, “Writing Tutor Practicum.” The proposal elicited a question about the<br />

“practicum” component of the course, with reservations expressed as to the lack of direct<br />

tutoring experience included in the course. Course was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee pending the revision of the following: the course title should be changed from<br />

“Writing Tutor Practicum” to “Writing Tutor Training Seminar,” and the “207” should be<br />

changed to “270” on the “Required Supporting Documentation” form.<br />

English 439, “Shakespeare and Film.” The proposal elicited a question about the<br />

restriction of “Seniors and Graduate Students Only” and whether the restriction would be<br />

enforceable in a practical manner. LaShawna Harris, from Academic Advising, informed<br />

the committee that restrictions are informative and are not enforced. Course was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.


Cluster Course: History 300CF/English 300CQ/Communication Studies 450CD, “Race in<br />

American Film. Course was unanimously approved by the committee pending the<br />

addition of “and” between “Communication Studies 405CD” and “English 300CQ” in the<br />

“Course Description” section on the History 300CF form.<br />

Black Studies 320/5520, “Critical Health Issues in Black Communities.” Course was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee pending removal of “(Please see attached<br />

document for complete course description.)” in “Course Description” section.<br />

Black Studies 321/5521, “The Black Family and Male-Female Relationships.” Course<br />

was unanimously approved by the committee pending removal of “(Please see attached<br />

document for complete course description.)” in “Course Description” section.<br />

Classics 301, “Survey of Western Art I.” Course was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee.<br />

Art & Art History 435P, “Visual Culture: Logos, Images, Symbols, and Advertising.”<br />

Course was unanimously approved by the committee pending inclusion of “to” between<br />

“is” and “further” in “Course Description” section.<br />

Art & Art History 439/5539, “Paris in the Age of the Rococo.” Course was unanimously<br />

approved by the committee.<br />

Art & Art History 479 and Classics 479, “From the Parthenon to the Altar of Peace.”<br />

Courses were unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Art & Art History 462/5562, “History of Modern Design.” The proposal elicited<br />

questions about the syllabus, namely the absence of a list of the weekly reading<br />

assignments (or integration of reading assignments into the course calendar). The<br />

committee recommends that this aspect of the syllabus be developed. Proposal tabled<br />

unanimously until next meeting.<br />

Art & Art History 463/5563, “Primitivism and Its Aftermath.” Course was unanimously<br />

approved by the committee.<br />

Art & Art History 464/5564, “Modern Art and the Grotesque.” Course was unanimously<br />

approved by the committee.<br />

Art & Art History 5540, “Seminar in French Art: Renaissance and Baroque.” Course was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.Course was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee pending revision of “presentation s” to “presentations” in course description.<br />

Art & Art History 5541, “Seminar in Northern Baroque Art: The Age of Rubens,<br />

Rembrandt and Wren.” Course was unanimously approved by the committee.


Art & Art History 5547, “Seminar in Italian Baroque Art: The Age of Caravaggio,<br />

Bernini, and Borromini.” Course was unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Art & Art History 5548, “Seminar in Spanish Art: El Greco to Gova.” Course was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

II. Course Modifications<br />

The suppression of Art History 300CS, 300CW, 403, 427, 428, 436P, 437P, 438P, 453,<br />

454, 457, 458, 459, 460, 497, 498 from the Undergraduate Course Catalog was<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

The suppression of Art 300CH, 300CM, and 498F from the Undergraduate Course<br />

Catalog was unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Course modifications for Art & Art History 105, 112, 204, 206, 221, 305, 311, 404, 411,<br />

and 421 were unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Course modification for Art & Art History 310 was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee pending the removal of the check mark in the “Prerequisite Change” box in<br />

the “Type of Modification” section of the form.<br />

Course modification for Art & Art History 438P was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee pending the addition of “Restriction Change” and an adjacent checked boy in<br />

the “Type of Modification” section of the form.<br />

Course modification for Statistics 234 was unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Course modifications for Math 420, 464WI, 5509, 5517, 414/5514, and 424/5524 were<br />

unanimously approved by the committee.<br />

Course modification for English 5529 was unanimously approved by the committee<br />

pending the revision of the “Winter <strong>2010</strong>” to “Winter 2011” in Section Three of form.<br />

Course modification for Communication Studies 5554 was unanimously approved by the<br />

committee.<br />

III. <strong>Committee</strong> Business <strong>Meeting</strong><br />

The minutes from the September 27, <strong>2010</strong>, meeting were unanimously approved by the<br />

committee.<br />

Scott Baker reported that a new form that addresses longstanding issues with crosslisting,<br />

Cluster Courses, etc., will be emerging from then Undergraduate <strong>Curriculum</strong><br />

<strong>Committee</strong>.


Scott Baker reported on developments from the General Education Oversight <strong>Committee</strong>.<br />

An e-mail will be going out to Deans and Department Heads soliciting feedback from all<br />

faculty concerning General Education outcomes. The results of this feedback request will<br />

come back to the committee in the future.
