22 Facing Oxford Street, west corner. UNDER CONSTRUCTION: A LOOK INSIDE If you’ve driven east on Oxford Street in London in the past three years, you’ve likely noticed the front face of Fanshawe College changing dramatically. Just west of what was B-Gym, a new Centre for ConstructionTrades and Technology has been constructed from the ground up. This inside look gives you a peak at the new twostorey high Plumbing Lab (just above) and the Electrical Wiring Lab (large photo on next page). Phase I also houses a 9,000 square foot Carpentry Shop with a 25-foot high ceiling that is big enough to build a complete house inside. Phase II, located directly east of Phase I where B-Gym was, will be ready in August 2006 featuring new classrooms, computer labs, drafting labs and academic space. The new labs shown here are used by both apprenticeship and post-secondary students who are training for careers in the construction industry. Fanshawe’s capacity to train electricians and plumbers has doubled since 2001 and more than four times as many carpentry students now have access to state-of-the-art training facilities compared to our numbers five years ago. These students are in high demand in a construction industry that has been booming for the past five years at the same time when many mature tradespeople are retiring. Each purposebuilt lab simulates a construction site so students learn both the theory and practical skills they will use daily on the job. Moreover, they also gain hands-on training in specialized aspects of their professions, such as back flow prevention for plumbers and industrial high voltage wiring for electricians. What you probably don’t know from driving by is that the new Centre for Trades and Technology represents only the tip of the iceberg of new facilities and renewal that has been transforming the London campus over the past five years. Government funding from the province has combined with strong support from industry partners and individuals to make it all happen.
