Just got married on
October 22, 2005
to Jason Garrett, we
met our fi rst year at
Fanshawe.
Walter Dutchak
(Electronics

Technology 77): I
have been “downsize
retired” from Bell
Canada for three
years now (after over
22 years of loyal
service with this
company). Perhaps
I should have been
more adventurous, and
tried other companies
over those long years.
Well, that would have
been diffi cult in any
case since I had left
teaching to go for the
three-year course at
Fanshawe and I was
married to Rosie and
had a 3-year-old son,
Peter, already at that
28
time, so changing
careers would have
posed additional
unneeded stresses on
the family. But my
3 years at Fanshawe
College were a
wonderful experience
for me. And I must say
that, in my opinion,
our instructors were
very good teachers and
great human beings
to boot. I was glad to
see that a note from
my classmate Klaus
Martinek appeared in
the Fall 2005 issue
and I thank him for
mentioning having
met me at the Alumni
25th reunion. It is
unfortunate that no
one else from our
THYETY class could
attend this reunion,
for it would have been
a pleasure to have
seen them again; but
it seems that there
are many ‘busy’ lives
these days. I had a
chance meeting with
Ed Gorski from our
class a few years back.

gold medalist makes
fanshawe proud
Karen Blachford (Fitness and Health
Promotion 04) took home a Gold Medal
for Canada at the Paralympic Games
in Torino in March 2006 in Wheelchair
Curling. Along with her teammates,
Sonja Gaudet, Gary Cormack, Gerry
Austgarden and Chris Daw, the
Canadian team triumphed over Great
Britain in the fi nal match on Day
Eight of the games held in Pinerolo,
Italy. Karen says travelling to Italy
and competing was an amazing oncein-a-lifetime
experience. The world
class facilities and organization of the
games were outstanding and she really
enjoyed meeting and getting to know the other athletes. Karen has just
relocated from London to Kingston where she will continue both her
career and her curling. We congratulate her on all her accomplishments
and wish her much happiness in her new home.
golf classic
Plans are now well underway for the 4th Annual Fanshawe Golf
Classic to be held at London’s Sunningdale Golf & Country Club on
Tuesday, August 22, 2006. Proceeds from the tournament will support
student awards and bursaries. There are many opportunities to participate
in this great tournament. If you would like to play golf, sponsor a hole
or activity, or donate silent auction or prize items, we’d love to hear
from you. For information on how to register for the 2006 Golf Classic,
