So, you cash the check they sent you and wire them back the money. Everyone’s happy, right? Wrong. The Postal Service, along with the Postal Inspection Service, has launched an awareness campaign to help consumers avoid being the victims of fraudulent check schemes like this one. It’s available at www.fakechecks.org. Northern star The Evergreen state has added another Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) worksite. The Vancouver, WA, Main Post Office achieved the coveted status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) VPP. Employees from the Vancouver Main Post Office. “The safety and health achievements obtained at this facility are truly remarkable, resulting in a record rate 65 percent below the average postal worksite,” OSHA’s Seattle Regional Administrator Richard Terrill said. OSHA created VPP to recognize and encourage excellence in occupational safety and health protection. Only facilities that exceed OSHA’s tough safety standards and pass its rigorous onsite evaluation obtain Star status. Vancouver Postmaster Robert Ayers said it took the worksite a year and a half to develop and implement its goal of earning VPP status. 185 employees work at the Vancouver Main Post Office. Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee celebrates 50th anniversary In 1957, Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield, in an effort to encourage citizen involvement in postal policy, created the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC). POSTAL BULLETIN 22217 (10-11-07) This year, CSAC is observing half a century as guardian and protector of the Postal Service’s stamp selection and design process. Over the years, its members have included such well-known Americans as artist Andrew Wyeth, novelist James Michener, actor Karl Malden and sports commentator Richard “Digger” Phelps. CSAC operates largely behind the scenes, acting as an independent buffer between the PMG and the public in the often intense campaigns for stamp designations. Its charter mandates the committee to provide USPS a “breadth of judgment and depth of experience” in designating stamp designs. Connecting to win Dexter, MI, Postmaster Robert Ridenour took the checkered flag in Race 2 of the Business Connect Race2Miami contest. He wins a trip for two to Miami, including VIP tickets to the final NASCAR race in Homestead, FL, next month. During Race 2, postmasters and station managers were asked to conduct at least five Business Connect activities and to base at least two of those activities on direct mail. Ridenour conducted 10 visits — seven relating to direct mail — generating more than $1,200 in new sales during that time frame. The Race2Miami contest is designed to encourage postmasters and managers to participate in Business Connect and to generate revenue for the Postal Service.
