Chapter 10: Transport of MDI by Water Vessel
10.1 Approved Containers
MDI may be transported by ocean vessel as follows:
• Inter-modal tank containers, by roll on/roll off chassis; use of a 40 foot drop-nose type is recommended.
• Inter-modal tank containers that are lifted on/off of container vessels.
• In bulk ocean tankers or inland waterway vessels (not covered by these guidelines. See Chapter 1.5).
• In intermediate bulk containers, which should be transported in freight containers.
• In non-bulk packaging such as drums, which should be transported in freight containers.
10.2 Parties Involved
Because of the nature of the activity, a number of different parties may be involved in transporting MDI from
shipper to customer. These may include shipping companies, freight forwarders, port or harbor authorities,
and carriers.
10.3 Safety Audits
The shipper should consider carrying out a safety audit of the following distribution operations:
• Forwarding operators;
• Loading and unloading facilities at container terminals; and,
• Emergency handling within hazardous cargo yards and container terminals.
