troops, <strong>and</strong> were surprised when<br />

Century only fifty years had elapsed<br />
since <strong>the</strong> Indian Mutiny, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
South African war was showing <strong>the</strong>m<br />
what a large number <strong>of</strong> troops were<br />
necessary for <strong>the</strong> defence <strong>of</strong> a mere<br />
fragment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Empire</strong>. I But <strong>the</strong>y<br />
