<strong>The</strong> Decline <strong>and</strong> Fall<br />
<strong>the</strong> sturdy frames <strong>of</strong> her men, <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> bright glances <strong>of</strong> her noble<br />
women: for him <strong>the</strong> fields never<br />
lose <strong>the</strong>ir freshness <strong>and</strong> village<br />
pleasures never pall. But such an<br />
one is no idle talker ; he is prepared<br />
to make sacrifices for v^hat he pro-<br />
fesses to love. Above all things, he<br />
is one who looks ahead, who spends<br />
time, money, <strong>and</strong> quiet forethought,<br />
that nothing may happen against<br />
which adequate preparations have<br />
not been made. And <strong>the</strong>se are<br />
greater things than to die.<br />
Why should I tell again <strong>the</strong><br />
shameful story that is known to<br />
each <strong>of</strong> us: <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> possessions that<br />
were stripped from Engl<strong>and</strong> because<br />
she had slumbered ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Isle<br />
denuded <strong>of</strong> troops ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corn-ships<br />
that never came ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fleet that<br />
grew weary with watching ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
dark night, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> crowded trans-<br />
ports ; <strong>of</strong> streets that lay sodden
