Plant Fall Crops To Still Enjoy Summer’s Bounty<br />

The summer heat has broken, and<br />

utumn will soon be upon us. But<br />

here’s still ample time to enjoy your<br />

wn backyard bounty. Fall is a great<br />

ime for gardening, thanks to cooler,<br />

ilder temperatures, a decrease in garen<br />

pests, and moist, well-draining soil.<br />

Prepare the garden for fall planting<br />

by removing plants that have stopped<br />

producing. Note where everything was<br />

planted and be sure to rotate crops.<br />

Level the ground after pulling plants,<br />

and remove weeds. Loosen compacted<br />

soil by fluffing it with a pitch fork or garden<br />

hoe. Major tilling isn’t necessary;<br />

just loosen soil sufficiently to enable<br />

new plant roots to grow. Add amendments<br />

such as compost to enrich the soil<br />

with fresh nutrients. If using a cold<br />

frame or hoop, set it up early so plants<br />

won’t risk damage once they begin to<br />

grow. Alternatively, dark landscaping<br />

fabric placed on the soil prior to plant-<br />

and low in calories. Give some of them<br />

a try.<br />

Lettuce<br />

There is more to lettuce than<br />

Iceberg. Leaf lettuces make a great<br />

addition to fall salads. Lettuce prefers<br />

days and nights cooler than 70 degrees.<br />

Grow lettuce from seed planted shallowly<br />

in rows.<br />

Spinach<br />

Favored by the cartoon hero Popeye,<br />

Spinach is related to beets and Swiss<br />

chard. Among the world’s healthiest<br />

vegetables, it is rich in vitamins and minerals,<br />

including Vitamins K and A. It also<br />

contains concentrations of manganese,<br />

magnesium, iron, as well as nutrients<br />

such as beta-carotene that provide powerful<br />

antioxidant protection. Maybe<br />

Popeye was on to something! Although<br />

spinach prefers full sun, it’s one of the<br />

few vegetables that produce a<br />

respectable harvest in partial shade.<br />

Peas<br />

Give peas a chance! There are several<br />

types of peas, including snap peas and<br />

pod peas. Pod peas need shelling when<br />

they are mature. Once the pods are<br />

shed, the peas can be frozen, cooked,<br />

canned or boiled. Snap peas have edible<br />

pods. They can be left on the plant<br />

to swell and be used like pod peas, or<br />

they can be stir-fried or eaten raw in salads.<br />

Peas like nitrogen-rich soil, so<br />

adding a nitrogen-rich fertilizer can<br />

help pea production.<br />

Carrots<br />

When most people think of carrots,<br />

they think of long orange ones. But<br />

there are many varieties that can be<br />

grown, from the long thin style to smaller<br />

thumb sized carrots, in colors ranging<br />

from red to yellow to white and the<br />

familiar orange. Carrots prefer cool<br />

weather for the best germination and<br />

growth. They tend to take a long time to<br />

germinate, sometimes as long as two<br />
