Pennsauken Public Schools Host Multicultural Book Fair
By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor
Pennsauken students and their families
came together as a community at Howard
M. Phifer Middle School to celebrate and
encourage a love of reading. The event,
sponsored by Pennsauken Public Schools,
in collaboration with Living Faith Christian
Center and the NJ Amistad Commission,
enabled families to break bread with
each other at a free pasta dinner; view
posters showcasing a love for reading that
were created by Pennsauken students; and
then browse multicultural children’s books
from publishers Mondo and Scholastic,
which were available for purchase at a discounted
rate.
“I am so excited about this event. And
it is one I really believe that will become a
tradition for our Pennsauken Public
Schools,” says Pennsauken School Superintendent
Marilyn Martinez. “We are a
district that focuses on achievement and
really having all children begin to understand
that reading is across all subject
areas. We want them to really engage in
During the Multicultural Book Fair, School Superintendent Marilyn Martinez
announced the winners of the Love of Reading Art Contest. Elementary and middle
school students were encouraged to submit a poster on why they love to read.
high levels of learning that interest them.
So tonight is really exciting, because we are
tying into the human nature of enjoying
books, food, and art.”
Mayor Rick Taylor
By Rick Taylor
Mayor of
Pennsauken
Township
While those last few days of March
brought some unusually cold weather
and even a stray flurry or two, spring is
officially here. And as the temperature
continues to rise, many of our
Pennsauken residents open up their
windows and get to work tidying up and
organizing their homes in the annual tradition
of “spring cleaning.” It’s a great
practice with some wonderful imagery.
As the seasons change from winter to
spring, it is an opportunity for many to
The Perfect Time Of Year For A Little “Spring Cleaning”
make a fresh start; bad habits, negative
attitudes, and even the winter “blahs” are
swept into the dustpan, and taken it out
with the trash.
What’s even better about this ritual of
spring is that many don’t just focus on
the insides of their homes, but also take
advantage of warmer weather to clean
up their lawns and their gardens. The
Township does this too. As Pennsauken
has once again dodged that wintery
“bullet,” our Public Works Department
has continued to sweep our streets
throughout the colder months, and has
begun fixing potholes and preparing our
parks and recreational facilities for eager
children, young people, and adults.
Our entire Township administration
encourages our residents, as well as
our businesses, to continue embracing
the spirit of “spring cleaning,” doing
whatever they can, no matter how big or
how small, to keep their properties well
maintained.
It’s amazing what some upkeep can
accomplish. A well-groomed property
that’s free of trash and clutter does wonders
for a neighborhood block or a business
complex.
On the opposite side, a poorly maintained
property does more than look
bad; it can cause potential hazards to our
residents. For example, improperly stored
garbage in public areas may result in insect
and rodent infestations, trip hazards,
and even accidental fires. That certainly
isn’t the kind of imagery that comes to
mind when you think about spring.
Property maintenance is so important
to our town that Township Committee
continues to make it a priority all year
round. Operation Clean and Green 130,
HOME BUYER’S SEMINAR – Saturdays at 10:00am
Tips on getting a good buy and prequalifying for a mortgage. Call for a reservation
an initiative championed by Committeewoman
Betsy McBride, has our Township
working closely with county and
state government to clean up and beautify
the public spaces along Route 130,
the major corridor that runs straight
through Pennsauken and serves as the
main access point to our town from
many other communities. We’re beginning
to see some momentum build behind
this effort, but it can only be truly
successful if property owners and business
people along the highway remain
committed to maintaining clean parking
areas, neat gardens and landscaping, and
fresh signage.
That’s true for your neighborhood as
well. By striving to have your home be
the envy of the block, you can help raise
the bar for your neighbors and create a
grassroots beautification initiative in
your part of town. And it’s not hard to
set a good example. It can be as simple
as picking up trash that’s blown onto
your property; or mowing your lawn and
making sure your grass clippings don’t
spill into the street where they could potential
find their way into storm drains
to pollute our waterways. A little effort
really goes a long way and can even
make a significant impact on the state of
our local environment.
So in closing, let’s do our part to do
some “spring cleaning” throughout
Pennsauken. It’s a great way to make
sure everyone can truly enjoy this wonderful
time of the year.
Pennsauken Police Urges Citizens To Keep An Eye Out For Copper Theft
By Pennsauken Police Chief John Coffey
Members of the Pennsauken Police
Department have been investigating a
number of burglaries at abandoned
homes in the Township. Subjects involved
in these burglaries and thefts have
been removing copper pipe, fixtures, and
other items that can be sold as scrap.
We have recently obtained a list of
abandoned homes in the Township, and
our officers have been making an effort
to check these properties during their
tours of duties. If officers find an abandoned
property unsecured, we notify
Pennsauken’s code enforcement office
to make arrangements to have the property
secured.
Arrests have been made in some of
these burglaries, and it is apparent that
these offenders receive a small amount
of money for the property they remove.
However, in many cases, these offenders
have caused thousands of dollars worth
of damage.
The Pennsauken Police Department
would like our residents to report any
suspicious activity they see near an abandoned
home in their neighborhood.
Please call 9-1-1 with information regarding
the location of the home, description
of the subjects involved, and a
description of any vehicle the subjects
may be using.
Pennsauken Police Officer
DWI Top Gun
The New Jersey Division of Highway
Traffic Safety has announced that
Pennsauken Township Police officer
Joseph Kuchmek is the 2012 DWI Top
Gun for the State of New Jersey. Ptl.
Kuchmek is an eight-year veteran of the
Pennsauken Police Department, and in
2012 he made 86 arrests for persons driving
under the influence of alcohol or
drugs. These 86 arrests were tops in New
Jersey for all police officers.
Ptl. Kuchmek has been invited to attend
an event in Trenton on April 24,
where he will receive his award. This
event is intended to bring further awareness
to the tragedies associated with impaired
driving and to commemorate the
lives lost as a result of an impaired driver.
The Hypnotic Professor Whiz
LOOKING BACK
IN HISTORY
By Robert Fisher-Hughes
AAP Columnist and Amateur Historian
Many interesting people have come to
be associated with Pennsauken Township
over its years and before. Some have lived
here and called it home for their entire
lives. Others have visited our Township
only briefly, but memorably, like Wrong
Way Corrigan. For others, Pennsauken
Township serves as their place of eternal
rest, like Peter J. McGuire.
One little remembered character who
called Pennsauken home during his later
years was known by a number of names
during his life and career: Miracle Man,
Professor Rythm, Professor Whiz, Fitz.
His true name was Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon,
and he was a man of many talents
and much imagination.
Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon was born in
Newfoundland in Canada around 1883.
He attended St. Bonaventure College in
Western New York, where he was a star
athlete, excelling at track and field events,
especially in long-distance races. Sometime
after college, he moved to New
York City and continued his track career,
running with the legendary New York
Irish-American Athletic Club, which furnished
many athletes to the American
Olympic teams of the 1900s.
At some point, while pursuing his
studies and following the disciplines of
long-distance running, Gerald discovered
the field that became his passion
and his career: hypnosis.
This was an era when the deeper mys-
teries of the human mind were only beginning
to be explored through fledgling
scientific efforts. Sigmund Freud’s theories
of the subconscious were still new
and exciting, holding out unknowable
possibilities. Spiritualism was widely in
vogue. Scientific and technological discoveries
like the wonders of electrical power,
phonography and radio, all seemed to hint
at unlimited fields of knowledge opening
to mankind. Hypnosis and the hidden
powers of the human mind seemed
clearly to be among these fields of knowledge,
and Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon explored
that unknown region.
In 1913, Fitzgibbon began a pattern he
would pursue for the remainder of his career
by combining new technology with
his passion to illustrate the potential of
hypnosis. In Buffalo, N.Y., Fitzgibbon made
the first hypnotic phonograph record. In
1916, he published a sort of manifesto of
his beliefs on the potential of hypnosis to
benefit mankind in a letter to the editor of
the Medical Review of Reviews.
Shortly after this, Fitzgibbon founded
“The Fitzgibbon Institute,” and began to
write and publish a series of pamphlets
to lay out a course of study in “Physical
and Mental Efficiency.” The aim of these
courses was to promote hypnosis, suggestion,
and auto-suggestion as a means to
harness the hidden powers of the mind
to benefit mankind. The courses suggested
that hypnotic methods could accomplish
many things, from developing
WAGSWORLD Winter’s Departure Comes With Sunshine’s Return
By Bob Wagne
AAP Columnist
A 24-hour time swing can change
everything!
Dawn broke, barely, as I stood at the
front door, watching wind-blown snow
cling to the cars and trucks huddled at
the curb. A few stray flakes blew into my
collar as I gathered up the morning
paper, kicking my kidneys into high gear
once again. I sat hunched over my coffee
cup, trying to draw a bit of warmth from
my morning brew, while reading the
news, as grey and depressing as the
weather. My wool shirt, new scarf, and
heavy socks seemed extra scratchy.
My mood matches the weather, as I
brush the cold and wet off the garage
door handle, and lift the heavy old wood
door. Once again flakes find my exposed
neck, sending my kidneys into
hyper drive. Inside, under the dull electric
lights, it feels like a refrigerator. My
firewood supply has dwindled down to
a few sticks, and my favorite chair is as
cold as the frozen chicken breast I took
out of the freezer this morning to defrost.
My mood is as dark as the grey sky
outside, fueled by what seems an interminable
winter.
A mere day later, warm sunshine surrounds
me, as I pull my freshly refurbished
V.W. Out of the garage. I shuck
my wool coat as the new sun warms my
look new and shiny. I’m filled with
thoughts of car shows, drives with the
windows down, and root beer mugs resting
on my window sill at Weber’s. My favorite
old chair, now sitting in the sun, is
as warm and comforting as an old quilt.
I can hear my fishing rods calling to me
from deep inside the garage, begging to
be taken down to the beach.
I’m feeling what it felt like a hundred
years ago to put on the first sneakers of
spring, and run down the street just as
fast as humanly possible, just for the feeling
of freedom.
Two whole days of sunshine and
warmth and the winter doldrums appear
gone. My good lined leather gloves are
A free guide has just been made available to type II diabetics detailing an
approach more powerful than any drug known to modern science. The free
diabetic guide explains in plain English how many diabetics have been able to
reduce and eliminate their drugs and insulin injections, lose weight without
exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, restore
pancreatic function, and even become non-diabetic. The free guide also
reveals rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand
potential causes of diabetes beyond weight gain, genetics, and lack of
exercise. To receive your free guide (available only while supplies last) call
COUNCIL OF PENNSAUKEN
BIG Council Unveils Plans For New Web Site
At the March
meeting of the Business,
Industry, and
Government Council
of Pennsauken
Township, the or-
ganization announced the development
of a newly designed web site. The site,
which is currently being designed by Chris
Owens of Pennsauken-based company
Innovafire Web Solutions, will provide a
comprehensive resource for both current
and potential B.I.G. Council members.
“The B.I.G. Council doesn’t have a
physical location, which makes it hard if
you want to get involved,” says Owens.
“So it makes sense to have a ‘virtual’ location,
so you can find everything, so you
can sign up for everything. It gives you a
central point to get oriented.”
The newly designed BIGPenn -
sauken.com, slated for a May relaunch,
will allow participating members to pay
their annual dues, pre-pay for the organization’s
monthly meetings, and find
links to pertinent online resources. There
will also be a searchable version of the
2013-2014 Pennsauken-Merchantville
Business Directory, where visitors to the
site will be able to find local companies
using specific criteria.
“Chris has been gracious enough to
help us out with our web site,” adds Tim
Ellis, B.I.G. Council chairperson. “He
lives and works in Pennsauken, and will
be very hands on as we continue to
move forward with our new site. It’s
going to be exciting.”
By 1919, Fitzgibbon was running ads
for his courses of self-improvement in
Popular Mechanics magazine, where he
was dubbed the “Miracle Man,” for his
*
transformation from a “commonplace
youngster” to a champion athlete and
psychologist, author and lecturer.
In this same period, like many other
forward-thinking people living in and near
the heady atmosphere of New York City
around the time of the First World War,
Fitzgibbon also came to embrace radical
social ideas. He is mentioned as a socialist
organizer, addressing strike rallies and
from 1919 to 1922 served as a staff member
of The New York Call, a socialist
newspaper of the day. He is particularly
noted as a gifted speaker, capable of entertaining
or rousing his audience at will.
It seems as though radicalism took
second place to his passion for hypnotism,
however. Perhaps, as for many
American socialists of the period, the
cruel realities presented by the Russian
Revolution resulted in disillusionment.
Whatever the reason, Fitzgibbon’s career
in hypnosis became paramount and took
decidedly un-socialistic pathways.
In 1927, Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon performed
a feat that came to be his most
famous achievement in hypnosis, to be
repeated again and again over the rest of
his career. On March 9, from a hotel in
Springfield, Massachusetts, Fitzgibbon
performed simultaneous hypnosis of
four people in three cities by radio
broadcast. The subjects were in Springfield,
Boston and New York City.
In 1935, Fitzgibbon relocated himself
and his Fitzgibbon Institute to Camden,
NJ. He began offering his courses to locals
from places like the Camden Lodge
of the Elks. He also toured with his program
to promote hypnosis, offering both
science and entertainment.
By 1937, Fitzgibbon was performing
his signature feat of hypnosis by radio
broadcast from Neil’s Grill in Camden
and with subjects at the Old Mill Inn in
Pennsauken, near Pennsauken Creek
where Route 130 crosses today. Broadcasts
of his hypnosis by radio programs
were carried over WCAM.
In 1941, Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon
moved his family to Pennsauken, and
settled in a home on Myrtle Avenue.
His many appearances before business
and trade groups attracted the attention
of a major local business, the R.M.
Hollingshead Company in Camden,
makers of a variety of products for the
home and automobile. Many of these
products were marketed under the brand
“Whiz” and among them was “Rhythm”
motor oil. Gerald M. P. Fitzgibbon became
a traveling promoter for the
Hollingshead Company, performing his
astounding programs in front of meetings
and conventions of potential buyers and
retailers of Whiz products. During this
time he was given the stage names of
“Professor Rythm,” and “Professor
Whiz,” as he traveled across the nation.
Fitzgibbon had retired multiple times,
but still performed locally at the time of
his death at age 72 in 1955. He had even
planned a new stunt whereby he would
go further still by hypnotizing people in
different towns along a route as he flew
overhead in an airplane!
This Is Not Your Aunt Bessie’s
Retirement
By Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist
Remember when you were a kid and
you watched your retired Grandparents
or Great Grandparents doing not much
more than sitting in a rocking chair, or
maybe just doing little odds and ends; visiting
the doctors, taking long naps, going
to church, and basically nothing else, other
than just waiting for the end to come?
I can recall my Aunt Bessie saying
how she was looking forward to the day
she went to heaven, but truthfully, I can’t
ever recall her embracing much of anything
else while she waited.
I guess she was the catalyst for me to
appreciate a full life. Funny isn’t it? The
way we learn some lessons.
Well, here is April and this month is a
whirlwind of activity. It usually is for me and
my close friends, many who are of retirement
age and beyond and have decided
not to retire; they either can’t afford to retire,
or they just really don’t want to retire.
April 3 brings my 65th birthday, and I
look forward to another year with joyful
anticipation. Since Easter’s happy family
festivities arrived at the tail end of March,
it was a great farewell to the third month
of the year and a happy ride into April.
So here’s how it’s looking for my first
official Medicare retirement month:
Andrew, bless his heart, has a wonderful
dinner party planned for my birthday.
Then on April 5th through the 7th, I’m a
guest speaker at The Beatles NY Metro
Fest. The 11th and 12th, we’re up in New
York City visiting friends and aiding animal
rescue. The 14th will find me at Java
and Gems on Centre Street as we launch
a friend’s book off into the wonderful
world of art and poetry. April 17th, I
leave on my nine-country book tour of
Great Britain and Central Europe. April
18th, I arrive in Manchester, England to
teach at Hindsford School, the same
school I teach to from our own Carson
School in that marvelous “Distance
Learning” program headed by teachers
extraordinaire, Francine Eisenmann and
Nancy Tryon. April 20th, I’m in Liverpool,
the land of the Fab Four, for the official
UK kick-off for my book, “Once
Upon a Time in Liverpool.” Then it’s off
to Central Europe on the 24th, with subsequent
book signings in Amsterdam,
Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany,
By Judith Kristen
AAP Columnist
France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy.
Then we’re back home in time for a
fabulous Cinco de Mayo gala!
So when does the dust ever get a
chance to settle? Hopefully never.
Now I’m not saying that a little downtime
is a bad thing. I myself enjoy many
a peace-filled, relaxing moment, but this
Go-Go-Go gal is just who I am and, with
any luck, who I’ll be until my last day
here on Planet Earth.
And when that final day arrives, I want
to be able to stand in front of God with a
smile on my face and say, “Father, I lived
a full life. I gave it all I had. And even during
some very tough times when I
thought I didn’t have any more left to
give, or even know where to look to see
where I lost it, I heard you tell me to
reach down deep into my heart and, you
know what? Miraculously, there’s where
I found even more love to give, more
time to cherish, more fun, more joy, more
of a life worth living to have and to share
with others.”
Yes, I want to be able to say in all
honesty, “Lord, I used everything you
gave me.”
So, call me over-worked, over-zealous,
over the top, or just plain old goofy.
But as one of my favorite authors of
all time, Erma Bombeck, once said,
“Seize the moment. Remember all those
women on the Titanic who waved off the
dessert cart.”
So now my friends, please pardon me
as I end this column and head over to my
favorite restaurant… straight toward
their dessert cart.
See you next month!
Peace and love… and all good things.
Black History Month Comes Alive At Roosevelt
On Feb. 22, Roosevelt Elementary
held its third annual Blacks in Wax Black
History Program. The purpose of the
program is to educate the students of the
school about African Americans who
have impacted the history of the United
States. It serves as the culminating activity
for a research project the students
complete in school.
This year’s project was cross-curricular,
God couldn’t be everywhere and so he
created teachers. Never was that more
evident than on Friday, March 8 in a
when the beautiful banquet area of The
with teachers during the New Jersey Association
22nd Annual Conference.
One of the evening’s most cherished
moments came during the annual awards
dinner, when Pennsauken’s very own
Francine Eisenmann was named Educator
of the Year.
Being a Pennsauken girl myself, and
covering an event honoring someone I
not only work with at Carson School’s
“Distance Learning” program, but who
I also call my very dear friend, it was a
particular joy for me to be there.
Francine Eisenmann is a familiar face
in our lovely little town of Pennsauken.
She has been an educator in our
Pennsauken Township schools for the
past thirty-four years. Over the years,
Francine taught both third and fourth
grades; inclusive classes; basic skills reading;
facilitated workshops for teachers;
wrote numerous curriculum guides; and
was always more than willing to lend a
hand to any student, aide, or fellow educator
as needed. She has always been
known for her kindness, compassion,
and generosity. She currently teaches
gifted language arts at Carson School.
“I am most fortunate to be teaching in one
of New Jersey’s finest programs,” says Eisenmann.
“Our model is unique, in that I see my
students every day. I have a fabulous Gifted
This year’s program was a great success.
Students dressed the part as the person
they researched, and posed as “wax”
Parents and the rest of the students at
the school were invited to tour the museum
under the guidance of third grade
students, who directed them to the various
“halls” of the “museum.”
Visitors could touch a button on wax
Students posing as notable musicians
American figures such as: businesswoman
Madam C. J. Walker; ragtime
composer Scott Joplin; champion boxer
Muhammad Ali; dancer and choreographer
Katherine Dunham; and Supreme
Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
As parents and students toured the
Read Across
America Celebration
At Carson School
On March 5, guest readers visited
G.H. Carson School to help celebrate
Read Across America. Guests from
around town read to classes and inspired
a love of reading in their students.
Members of the Board of Education,
fire department, school district administrators,
Superintendent Martinez, as well
as many others, were invited to join in this
celebration of reading. This annual event
is always a highlight for our students.
This year, Carson School is celebrating
Read Across America by reading the
route of the Iditarod. Students and staff
are reading 998 minutes to follow the 998
miles of the Iditarod-South trail from
Anchorage to Nome.
Guest readers shared books about the
Iditarod and dogsled racing, as well as
many of their own childhood favorite
stories.
The staff would like to say thank you
to everyone who took time out of their
busy schedules to read and celebrate
with the students!
Pennsauken’s Francine Eisenmann Educator Of The Year
continued from page 15
with her classes. Currently, students are in
the process of contributing to an interactive
video book, which premiered during Carson’s
Read Across America Celebration
the first week in March.
Over the past four years, Francine
Eisenmann is very proud to have initiated
NJAGC’s REACH Program in
Pennsauken. With the support of the District,
she has given parents, students, and
teachers from the tri-county area, the opportunity
to experience Challenge Stations,
network with other gifted students,
parents, and teachers, and listen to motivating
and educational speakers. Francine
felt a strong need to give gifted students,
parents, and teachers in the South Jersey
area, a place to go and grow together.
Ms. Eisenmann currently sits on the
NJAGC Board as co-vice president of
membership. It is important to keep
gifted programs alive and well throughout
New Jersey. Future generations depend
on us to cultivate the young minds
who will be our next leaders. All children
deserve high quality gifted programs to
grow to their fullest potential. Francine
enters her classroom each day with that
thought in mind.
As she stated upon receiving her award,
“Teaching has been my passion for as long
as I can remember. My dream to be a
teacher came true thirty-four years ago,
when Pennsauken embraced me into their
family of educators. It’s all about the children.
That’s why I do what I do. I still love
it after all these years. I absolutely love it!”
And it shows. Just ask any student
who was fortunate enough to be a part
of her classroom.
Francine is happily married to a very
loving and supportive husband, named
Bill, and is the mother of two grown sons.
Over the years, the entire family has volunteered
to take part in many of
Francine’s special school projects.
“Teaching is a family affair in our house.”
Francine is also very active in her
community, volunteering for various
charity fundraisers, events that support
animal rescue, and in all facets of her
church to help make the world a better
place in any way she can.
Someday, there will be “The Francine
Eisenmann Outstanding Teacher of the
Year” Award.
I'm absolutely certain of it... and so is
everyone else who knows her.

Arrow Of Light Awarded To Six Scouts, Pinewood Awards
And Rank Advancements Given
Pack 116 families met for an international-themed
pot-luck lunch in early
March to celebrate Cub Scouting’s birthday
and to present its highest award, the
Arrow of Light, to fifth graders Matthew
Callaway, Erik Connor, Joshua Green,
Michael Mills, Marty Nickollof, and Peter
Stemetski. The award, presented at the
Pack’s annual Blue and Gold banquet, was
the culmination of their Cub Scout careers,
many of whom have been in the Pack
since they were Tiger Cubs in first grade.
Besides their Arrow of Light, many of
the boys earned the Leave No Trace
Award from National Boy Scouts, and also
crossed over to Boys Scouts. The cross-over
ceremony involved the application of “war
paint” to symbolize the aspects of Cub
Scouts they completed. Then they crossed
the ceremonial bridge and were greeted by
members of the local troops.
Younger Cub ranks received earned
belt loops and patches; most received
their Progress Toward Rank emblem
and beads. James Tuvell received his Wolf
rank and Michael Ciarrocca, Sean Connor,
Aidan Hughes, Anthony Marinelli,
Nicholas Mills, and Liam Semmler
earned their Webelos badge, which is the
first requirement towards the Arrow of
Light, which they can earn next year.
The theme for this Cub Scout year has
been “Cub Scouting = A Passport to Adventure.”
Each den chose a country and
has been learning about that country as
part of their meetings. For the banquet,
blooming onions from Australia, potatoes
dogs and sauerkraut from Germany, and
baklava from Greece. The Pack provided
chicken nuggets, mac and cheese,
and ham, while everyone brought the
side dishes to supplement them. It was a
real feast and there was plenty of everything.
For dessert, the Cubs brought cupcakes
decorated to the theme of their
county or the Passport to Adventure.
The boys voted for their top three
favorites; chefs Ben Katzberg, Gio
Marinelli and brother team, Matt and
Chris Hunter, along with their parent
helpers, were awarded medals.
Pinewood Derby
In January, the Pack held its annual
Pinewood Derby. The top six finishers
were Seamus Blessinger, Sean Connor,
Chris Buskirk, Sean Connor, C.J. Diaz, Gio
Marinelli, and Liam Semmler. Because
C.J. is a K-Kub (kindergartner) and ineligible
to represent the pack at the district finals,
the seventh finisher, coincidentally
C.J.’s older brother Mikey, took his place.
The dens will continue to work towards
their rank and everyone should be
completed by graduation in June.
PUBLICWORKS Recycling In Pennsauken Equals Dollars Saved
By Bernie Kofoet
Public Works Superintendent
According to the United States Environmental
Protection Agency, the average
American creates 4.4 pounds of trash a
day. That equates to 1,660 pounds per year.
Based on data from ReCommunity,
the company which handles recyclables
collected in Camden County, 54 percent
of trash collected in the United States is
land filled; 25 percent is recycled; 12 percent
is incinerated; and nine percent is
composted.
The most common types of waste are
food and yard waste at 32 percent; paper
and cardboard at 29 percent; plastics at
12 percent; textiles and other products
also at 12 percent; metal at nine percent;
and glass at 5 percent.
In part, America’s dependence on
packaging has caused an increase in the
amount of trash generated. The next
time you go to a fast food drive thru, look
at what you received in addition to your
food and beverage. You’ll have a bag,
napkins, container for your beverage,
wrappings for you sandwich, plastic utensils,
and a receipt. That’s a lot more than
the extra calories you’ll be eating.
Currently, every ton of trash that is collected
from households in Pennsauken
cost $65 per ton to dispose of. Proper recycling
can reduce that disposal cost significantly.
Every ton of recyclables
reduces the cost by $65 and actually generates
revenue.
Over the years, the collection of and
the materials that can be recycled has
evolved to the present day “single stream
recycling” program.
You no longer need to separate your
cans and bottles from your paper. The
classes of acceptable plastics have increased.
The only plastics currently not
acceptable for recycling are those with a
three or six in the recycling triangle found
on all plastic containers.
Stop for a minute and look what happens
in your own household with regard
to trash and recyclables. Is everyone in
your home aware that recycling is required?
Do they know what can and
can’t be recycled? Most people know
that soda cans, food product cans, milk
and soda containers, newspapers, and
magazines are recyclable. Are you aware
that junk mail, window envelopes, store
receipts, as well as cardboard tubes from
paper towels and toilet paper are also recyclable?
Yes, these items individually
have very little weight to them, but collectively
over a year for every house it
can adds up to a significant amount.
Do you know what to do with plastic
caps on soda bottles or other containers?
They are recyclable as well. However,
you should leave them screwed on to the
container. They are so small and light that
if they are removed and thrown into the
can, they can fall through the processing
equipment and end up in the trash.
Many of us have home shedders to
dispose of documents. Do you know
how to dispose of the shredded paper?
Yes it is recyclable, but it should be placed
in a clear bag and placed out with your
recyclables. If you dump it into your yellow
can, when it reaches the recycling
plant it will blow around, get into the
sorting machinery and again end up as
trash. Placing it in a clear bag will allow
the line workers to pull the bag and place
it in a container to be properly recycled.
Another way to handle shredded paper
is to compost it in your back yard compost
bin or use it as mulch in your garden.
When you’re finished with that pizza
from your neighborhood pizza store
what do you do with the box? This one
is a little tricky. If it has cheese and grease
all over it you should trash it. Otherwise,
remove the paper sheet and as long as
the box isn’t stained with grease, recycle
it. If the box bottom is stained and the top
isn’t, tear off the top, trash the bottom
way to inspire young people who are trying
to find meaning in life and attempting
to put together a game plan for the future.
The book speaks about goal setting,
chasing dreams, taking personal responsibility
and living a balanced life.
“I wrote a book about growing up, becoming
an adult where you have to establish
certain things,” explained Cobb.
“I tied it to athletics where you have to
develop fundamentals. You’ve got to
have the fundamentals as you grow into
adulthood. You have to have a purpose
for your life. You start making those
kinds of decisions on what kind of a person
you want to be. You develop some
maturity about having responsibility and
being responsible for what you do.”
Cobb spoke to a packed auditorium,
sharing important life lessons to an attentive
audience. He encouraged young
people to think before they act, to maintain
balance in their lives, further their
education and don’t allow fear to keep
them from their dreams. “You can’t be
afraid. I’ve seen fear stop so many people,
it’s slowed me down at times. You’ll
have things that bother you. You don’t
think you can do anything, so you don’t
try. If you don’t try, I’ll guarantee you one
thing: you will fail. You’ve got to have
courage. You’ve got to be willing to lose.
Everybody fails. You tell me anybody
who’s ever achieved anything great, and
I’ll show you somebody who’s failed. So
don’t you let fear of failing stop you from
trying.”
With spring also comes renewed and
vigorous growth of tree roots that can
block sewer lines. We take every
possible effort to keep our main lines
free of roots through our maintenance
program. The lateral line from your
house to our main line, however, is the
Longtime Pennsauken Employee
William Buffington Honored With
Room Dedication At Township Building
continued from page 1
day, March 3, was attended by many people
who knew and loved Buffington,
who passed away on April 16, 2009 at the
age of 76. It was standing room only, a
moving sight, according to Bill’s wife,
Lucille. “I’m very happy to see so many
people turn out. I didn’t realize how
many people’s lives he had touched.”
William Buffington, or “Buff,” as he
was affectionately called by many of his
friends and co-workers, served as the
Township’s Tax Assessor for over 37
years. Mayor Taylor described Buffington
as “someone that probably knew
more about Pennsauken than anyone
when it came to land use.” In fact, he was
highly influential in the Township’s purchase
of the land that became the
Pennsauken Country Club. “He had a lot
of foresight with the land,” added Lucille.
And while Buffington’s significant accomplishments
helped bolster Penn -
sauken’s development, it was apparent
that the day’s festivities more so recognized
his connection and commitment to
the town he lived in for decades.
“He started working here in the 60’s.
His family was [one] part of his life;
Pennsauken was the other,” explained
Lynn O’Donnell, one of Buffington’s
three daughters.
During the reception, many fond
memories were shared by Buff’s friends
and loved ones. Co-workers saw him as
a trusted mentor and father-figure; his
granddaughter, Julia, with tearful laughter,
remembered getting into trouble for
playing with the chairs in the very same
room that now bears her grandfather’s
name; others still talked of his love of the
movie, “Gone with the Wind,” and his
passion for road trips, particularly to
Florida. And as his family gathered for
the photo that accompanies this article,
there were two prevailing thoughts that
could have been expressed by anyone in
attendance. The first was stated by his
daughter, Sandra Laino, who spoke by
her father’s picture. “We all remember
him like this, here in this building. He was
all about Pennsauken. He was very
proud and we are very proud today.”
The second was very eloquently stated
by Bill’s wife. “I miss him.”
Pennsauken Police Department
Receives NJSACOP Accreditation
On Sunday, March 3, 2013 a team of
assessors from the New Jersey State Association
of Chiefs of Police
(NJSACOP) arrived at the Pennsauken
Police Department to conduct a two-day
evaluation and examination of all aspects
of the police department. The assessors
reviewed the department’s
policies and procedures, management,
operations, and support services.
The purpose of his evaluation was to
achieve accredited status from the New
Jersey State Association of Chiefs of
Police. In order to receive the accreditation
status, the Pennsauken Police
Department was required to comply
with over 100 standards. The process to
achieve accreditation status, started
over two years ago.
NJSACOP accreditation is a voluntary
process, and once achieved, is
viewed as a highly prized recognition of
law enforcement excellence, demonstrating
that the Pennsauken Police Department
meets the Commission’s “best
practice” standards.
Accreditation results in greater responsibility
within the organization, provides
clearly defined policies for both the
rank and file and administrative officers
within the department, reduces risk and
liability exposure, and provides more
confidence in the police department’s
ability to operate efficiently and assist the
community.
NJSACOP accreditation is valid for
a three year period; during this
time, Pennsauken Police must forward
reports to the NJSACOP indicating
continued compliance with accreditation
standards.
At the end of the two-day evaluation,
the police department was advised by the
assessors that a recommendation would
be made to the New Jersey State Association
of Chiefs of Police that the
Pennsauken Police Department achieves
accreditation status. This award is expected
to be presented to members of
the Pennsauken Police Department at a
NJSACOP meeting in May 2013.
Composting A Natural Way To Feed Your Soil
By Kathleen Harvey,
Owner, Plant Artistry, LLC
Gardens are a constant work in
progress, and like us, need to be maintained
to be healthy. Making your own compost
lessens the amount of garbage in our landfills,
provides nutrients to feed your soil, balances
the pH, and adjusts soil texture for
proper water retention and aeration.
The Difference Between
Compost And Mulch
Mulch sits on top of the soil and is
usually composed of wood chips or
licorice root. Its purpose is to help retain
water, keep soil at a more even temperature
to reduce plant heaving in winter,
and for weed prevention in summer.
Compost is blended into the soil,
amending it to help bring soil conditions
closer to optimal for plants.
Benefits Of Compost Versus
Synthetic Fertilizers
Compost contains nutrients that are
often absent in synthetic fertilizers. Compost
releases nutrients slowly, unlike synthetic
fertilizers which can burn roots if
provided in too high of a concentration.
Compost buffers the soil, neutralizing
both acid and alkaline soils, helping to
bring pH levels to the optimum range for
nutrient availability to plants. Compostenriched
soil retains mineral nutrients better
than synthetic fertilizer, which can run
into storm drains and pollute waterways.
How To Make Compost
Making your own compost isn’t as difficult
or smelly as some people think, if
done correctly. The important thing to remember
is to use ingredients in the
proper proportion just like any other
recipe. Ingredients for composting include
water, air and carbon- and nitrogen-rich
materials. The fastest way to produce fertile,
sweet-smelling compost is to maintain
a lot more carbon than nitrogen. If the
C:N ratio is too high (i.e., excess carbon),
decomposition slows down. When the
C:N ratio is too low (i.e., excess nitrogen),
it creates an unpleasant odor. Now, ingredient
details. High carbon materials tend
to be brown and dry (e.g., leaves we collect
in the fall). High nitrogen materials tend
to be green or colorful and wet, such as
fruit and vegetable rinds or peels. Examples
are non-meat kitchen waste, egg
shells, used coffee grounds and tea leaves,
or even grass clippings if they haven’t been
coated in synthetic weed killers. Add just
enough water to dampen the mixture.
Oxygen in the air provides the decomposition
process. Optionally, soil and earthworms
from your garden can be added to
speed up the process. Compost containers
can be a manufactured bin, home made
box, plastic trash can with holes drilled in
the side and bottom, or simply a pile in a
remote corner of the yard.
Compost Preparation
Two composting bins are best, one for
finished or “cooked” compost, the second
for “raw” ingredients. The decomposition
process is aided by shredding the
plant matter, adding water, and ensuring
proper aeration by regularly turning the
mixture. Fancy composting bins can be
tumbled to mix the entire batch; it’s my
preference, because it’s easier. Contents
of simple composting bins must be
stirred manually, using a pitch fork or
shovel. Worms ingest partly composted
material, but also continually re-create
aeration and drainage tunnels as they
move through the compost. If garden
worms are added, do not add chemical
compost aids, as these will kill the worms.
Compost that is ready to be used as a soil
weak in nutrients with less than 100ppm
of available nitrogen and potassium,
which makes it perfect for seedlings.
Using Compost
Mix compost 50/50 with soil when
planting new landscaping plants such as
plants, or spread a thin layer on lawns in
the spring and fall. That’s all there is to it!
Now, that wasn’t so hard, was it? You
may be surprised how well your plants
respond, so why not give it a try?
Food Adventures In Pennsauken: Taste of Pennsauken
By Rachael Rivera, AAP Columnist
Pennsauken offers so many varieties of
cuisine in and around our Township. It’s
fortunate to be from a place that is so central
to urban, suburban and rural food
scenes, as well as more worldly dishes. For
the longest time Pennsauken has been
home to places like The Pub, Penn Queen
Diner, Macaro’s Deli, and Montegrillo’s
continued from page 19
Yes, they are recyclable, but you shouldn’t
place them in your yellow can. Most supermarkets
provide containers at their
entrance for the recycling of these bags.
Better yet, consider using your own
reusable bag when you go shopping.
As the numbers above indicate, food
waste and yard waste is a large part of
the trash stream. What can you do about
that? Consider creating a back yard
compost pile. This will allow you to remove
most food waste from the trash
stream. Leave your grass clipping on the
lawn when you cut. They will decompose
naturally and add valuable nutrients to
your lawn. Leafs and other yard waste
can also be added to the compost pile.
If composting won’t work for you, the
Township does offer yard waste collection
once a week, year round. Grass clip-
Italian restaurant. More recently, the food
scene has evolved to include places offering
Pho, a popular Vietnamese dish, vegetarian
food and traditional Indian dishes.
In my experience as a Pennsauken resident,
I’ve noticed that the true gastro
“Meccas” can be found all along Westfield
Avenue, parts of Maple or Park avenues,
and along Routes130 and 70. If you ven-
ping, leafs, and other yard waste are collected
every Wednesday. Do not place
your yard waste in the yellow can. That
can is to be used exclusively for your single
stream recyclables. There is no limit
on the amount of recyclables or yard
waste that you can place out every week.
There are still some things which can’t
be recycled. Any type of hazardous
waste should be disposed of at one of the
“Special Waste Collection Days” provided
by Camden County. Look for the
dates in each month’s “Talking Trash.”
Dirty diapers or any type of bio-hazardous
waste cannot be recycled. Items
such as ceramic, china, dishes, mirrors,
light bulbs, Pyrex, porcelain and window
glass are also not recyclable.
Together, with a little effort, we can increase
our recycling results while helping
to reduce waste collection costs.
Collingswood And Pennsauken Sign Shared Services Agreement For Fire Services, Inspections
In another step to reduce costs and
share services between municipalities,
Collingswood and Pennsauken officials
formalized an agreement to share fire
prevention and housing inspection services
for three years.
The arrangement merges inspection
services of the two fire departments to
create a Fire Prevention Bureau which
will share Pennsauken’s current fire official,
one administrative secretary from
Collingswood, and four licensed part time
inspectors to be hired by both
Collingswood and Pennsauken to handle
the fire and property maintenance inspections
for both towns. The Bureau will be
headquartered in Pennsauken, but property
owners can still contact their local fire
departments to make payments, drop off
paperwork and handle other business.
The process also means streamlining
forms and fees for each town and making
more information available online.
“This is a much more cost effective
way of doing business and creates numerous
efficiencies within both of our
organizations. This will allow us to provide
a better service to the residents,
Employment Opportunity:
Fire Prevention Inspector
The Township of Pennsauken has announced
an employment opportunity
for part time Fire Prevention Inspector.
These positions are classified with the NJ
Civil Service Commission as Fire Prevention
Specialist and will require the
successful candidate(s) to make application
through the open competitive
process at a later date; the position will
remain in a provisional classification
until a permanent appointment is made.
Duties will include the performance of
fire code enforcement inspections and
public education details in the Township
of Pennsauken and the Borough of
Collingswood under the direction of the
Fire Official. The applicant should possess
strong communication and problem
owners and businesses in our municipalities,”
said Collingswood Fire Chief
Keith Davis.
This shared service will save
Collingswood $50,000, Pennsauken
$70,000 and frees up fire fighters for
emergencies and fire prevention efforts
including education programs like
smoke detectors programs, school outreach
and other community services. The
new inspection bureau framework is designed
to allow other interested municipalities
to partner for inspections as well.
”This is set up so that other towns in
the region can easily get on board as well
and we can all see a savings in our inspection
costs,” said Davis.
“By merging, everyone wins,” said
Pennsauken Fire Chief Joseph Palumbo.
“Each town is leveraging their strengths
to build upon the current inspection
process with more comprehensive resources.
We’ll get to do more inspections
more thoroughly in a timely basis and at
a better cost. That also means safer properties
for both towns.”
”This is another great example of local
officials looking closely at ways to save
money, opening the lines of communication
and taking steps that have a serious
impact on how we run our towns,” said
Collingswood Mayor Jim Maley. “It’s
more important now than ever that we investigate
ways to work together to run
things as efficiently as possible.”
“What really stands out about this
shared services agreement is that it keeps
firefighters on the trucks; so in addition to
saving taxpayer money, we’re also improving
the coverage of both of our fire depart-
ments,” said Pennsauken Mayor Rick Taylor.
“This innovative plan is a testament to
the hard work of Chief Palumbo, our department
of Public Safety, as well as Chief
Davis, Mayor Maley and the good people
of Collingswood.”
April is Child Abuse Awareness
month. To draw attention to the plight of
neglected and abused children, the
Woman’s Club of Merchantville, the
Evening Membership Department, and
the Juniors are sponsoring two pinwheel
gardens, one in Pennsauken and one in
Merchantville.
Prevent Child Abuse America’s campaign
is an effort to change the way our
nation thinks about prevention and how
we can deliver on our commitment to
America’s children. As the new symbol
for child abuse and neglect prevention,
the pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of
childhood and the bright futures all children
deserve.
In 2011, New Jersey had 22 children
die from abuse or neglect. There were
also 8,238 reported cases of child abuse.
Prevent Child Abuse America suggests
the several alternatives to lashing
Help Prevent Child Abuse
• Take a deep breath... and another.
Then remember you are the adult.
• Close your eyes and imagine you’re
hearing what your child is about to
hear.
• Press your lips together and count to
10, or better yet, to 20.
• Put your child in a time-out chair. Remember
this rule: one time-out minute
for each year of age.
• Put yourself in a time-out chair. Think
about why you are angry: is it your
child, or is your child simply a convenient
target for your anger?
• Phone a friend.
• If someone can watch the children, go
outside and take a walk.
• Take a hot bath or splash cold water on
your face.
• Hug a pillow.
• Turn on some music. Maybe even sing
along.
• Pick up a pencil and write down as
many helpful words as you can think
of. Save the list.
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
By Billy Wright
Pennsauken High School Athletic Director
Balancing two hours of daily practice
and the fatigue that goes along with it,
taking long evening bus trips and competing
three times a week, then finding
the energy and time to do homework
and study takes a unique mind-set and
balancing of skills. Sixty-three of the one
hundred sixty six winter athletes, 38 percent,
qualified for the second marking
period honor roll. The boys and girls
bowling team led the field with 18 honorees,
followed by the wrestling team
with 15, the boys and girls winter track
teams with 12, the girls basketball team
with 10, and boys basketball with eight.
Individual honors went to senior Kate
Morse of the bowling team with a 4.42
GPA, junior wrestler Jason Goldstein at
4.16, sophomore indoor track student-athlete
Jevante Parris at 3.63, and boys basketball
freshman Diego Viera with a 4.48.
Henderson District Champion
For the third year in a row, a PHS
wrestler has come out on top in the district
wrestling tournament. Senior standout
John Henderson earned a 9-2 win in
the 120 lb. final to claim the gold medal
and advance to the NJSIAA regions.
As the number one seed, John earned a
bye in the quarterfinals and won a 12-2
semifinal bout to advance to the finals.
Student Athletes Balance Both Academics And Sports
Other recent PHS district champs were
Peter Hoang last year, and Byron Rozier
in 2011.
Placing second was junior Edwin
Lopez, who put up a gallant fight in the
113 lb. final. Both John and Edwin advanced
to the Region championships
with the hope of a date in the finals in
Atlantic City.
Three other PHS wrestlers advanced
to the consolation final with all or nothing
on the line. Tyler Carducci lost a 6-5 heartbreaker
at 138 lbs. and Thomas Fisher
(132 lbs.) and Abdul Baasit-Lari (195 lbs.)
came up short after noble efforts.
Dickerson First At Eastern States
Going back in history to the 1930’s, the
New York City Armory has been the
Mecca of indoor track and field on the
East Coast. PHS senior Antwan Dickerson
paid his respects to the old venue by
leaping 22’ 11” to claim the long jump at
the Eastern States Championships. The
victory was only the second by a PHS
athlete in the 89-year history of the meet.
Previously, PHS Hall of Famer Alethia
Jenkins won the 55 meter hurdles in 2000.
A week earlier, Antwan competed in
the NJSIAA Meet of Champions, looking
to claim bragging rights as the best
high hurdler in New Jersey. Antwan advanced
to the finals and pulled lane
seven, outside of the action in the middle
St. Cecilia School
presents

of the track. Running his second best
time of the season, Antwan came home
sixth in a blanket finish decided at the
line by 6/100ths of a second.
Ten Receive Conference
All Star Recognition
Ten PHS athletes were recently
named Burlington County Scholastic
League all stars. Isaiah Ingram led the
group by being named a first team
honoree in voting by league coaches in
basketball. The honor is his second of the
year, as he was also named first team all
league in football, where he is a two-time
all star. Also named to the first team were
John Henderson in wrestling and Jessica
Bello in bowling.
In addition, second team honors went
to Stephen Cobb and Tanel Lewis in basketball;
Meghan Guagenti and Walt
Jones for bowling; and wrestling team
members Edwin Lopez, Abdul Baasit
Lari, and Hendrickson Tineo.
Post Season All Star Game
As special as being chosen a conference
all star can be for a high school athlete,
being chosen to compete in front of
a large crowd in an all-star contest is arguably
a bigger event. Post season invitations
for all-star play were presented to
John Henderson who was chosen to play
in the Delaware-New Jersey Wrestling
