The book speaks about goal setting, chasing dreams, taking personal responsibility and living a balanced life. “I wrote a book about growing up, becoming an adult where you have to establish certain things,” explained Cobb. “I tied it to athletics where you have to develop fundamentals. You’ve got to have the fundamentals as you grow into adulthood. You have to have a purpose for your life. You start making those kinds of decisions on what kind of a person you want to be. You develop some maturity about having responsibility and being responsible for what you do.” Cobb spoke to a packed auditorium, sharing important life lessons to an attentive audience. He encouraged young people to think before they act, to maintain balance in their lives, further their education and don’t allow fear to keep them from their dreams. “You can’t be afraid. I’ve seen fear stop so many people, it’s slowed me down at times. You’ll have things that bother you. You don’t think you can do anything, so you don’t try. If you don’t try, I’ll guarantee you one thing: you will fail. You’ve got to have courage. You’ve got to be willing to lose. Everybody fails. You tell me anybody who’s ever achieved anything great, and I’ll show you somebody who’s failed. So don’t you let fear of failing stop you from trying.” With spring also comes renewed and vigorous growth of tree roots that can block sewer lines. April 2013 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN Page 21 Longtime Pennsauken Employee William Buffington Honored With Room Dedication At Township Building continued from page 1 day, March 3, was attended by many people who knew and loved Buffington, who passed away on April 16, 2009 at the age of 76. It was standing room only, a moving sight, according to Bill’s wife, Lucille. “I’m very happy to see so many people turn out. I didn’t realize how many people’s lives he had touched.” William Buffington, or “Buff,” as he was affectionately called by many of his friends and co-workers, served as the Township’s Tax Assessor for over 37 years. Mayor Taylor described Buffington as “someone that probably knew more about Pennsauken than anyone when it came to land use.” In fact, he was highly influential in the Township’s purchase of the land that became the Pennsauken Country Club. “He had a lot of foresight with the land,” added Lucille. And while Buffington’s significant accomplishments helped bolster Penn - sauken’s development, it was apparent that the day’s festivities more so recognized his connection and commitment to the town he lived in for decades. “He started working here in the 60’s. His family was [one] part of his life; Pennsauken was the other,” explained Lynn O’Donnell, one of Buffington’s three daughters. During the reception, many fond memories were shared by Buff’s friends and loved ones. Co-workers saw him as a trusted mentor and father-figure; his granddaughter, Julia, with tearful laughter, remembered getting into trouble for playing with the chairs in the very same room that now bears her grandfather’s name; others still talked of his love of the movie, “Gone with the Wind,” and his passion for road trips, particularly to Florida. And as his family gathered for the photo that accompanies this article, there were two prevailing thoughts that could have been expressed by anyone in attendance. The first was stated by his daughter, Sandra Laino, who spoke by her father’s picture. “We all remember him like this, here in this building. He was all about Pennsauken. He was very proud and we are very proud today.” The second was very eloquently stated by Bill’s wife. “I miss him.” Pennsauken Police Department Receives NJSACOP Accreditation On Sunday, March 3, 2013 a team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) arrived at the Pennsauken Police Department to conduct a two-day evaluation and examination of all aspects of the police department. The assessors reviewed the department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The purpose of his evaluation was to achieve accredited status from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. In order to receive the accreditation status, the Pennsauken Police Department was required to comply with over 100 standards. The process to achieve accreditation status, started over two years ago. NJSACOP accreditation is a voluntary process, and once achieved, is viewed as a highly prized recognition of law enforcement excellence, demonstrating that the Pennsauken Police Department meets the Commission’s “best practice” standards. Accreditation results in greater responsibility within the organization, provides clearly defined policies for both the rank and file and administrative officers within the department, reduces risk and liability exposure, and provides more confidence in the police department’s ability to operate efficiently and assist the community. NJSACOP accreditation is valid for a three year period; during this time, Pennsauken Police must forward reports to the NJSACOP indicating continued compliance with accreditation standards. At the end of the two-day evaluation, the police department was advised by the assessors that a recommendation would be made to the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police that the Pennsauken Police Department achieves accreditation status. This award is expected to be presented to members of the Pennsauken Police Department at a NJSACOP meeting in May 2013.
