This Is Not Your Aunt Bessie’s
Retirement

Remember when you were a kid and
you watched your retired Grandparents
or Great Grandparents doing not much
more than sitting in a rocking chair, or
maybe just doing little odds and ends; visiting
the doctors, taking long naps, going
to church, and basically nothing else, other
than just waiting for the end to come?
I can recall my Aunt Bessie saying
how she was looking forward to the day
she went to heaven, but truthfully, I can’t
ever recall her embracing much of anything
else while she waited.
I guess she was the catalyst for me to
appreciate a full life. Funny isn’t it? The
way we learn some lessons.
Well, here is April and this month is a
whirlwind of activity. It usually is for me and
my close friends, many who are of retirement
age and beyond and have decided
not to retire; they either can’t afford to retire,
or they just really don’t want to retire.
April 3 brings my 65th birthday, and I
look forward to another year with joyful
anticipation. Since Easter’s happy family
festivities arrived at the tail end of March,
it was a great farewell to the third month
of the year and a happy ride into April.
So here’s how it’s looking for my first
official Medicare retirement month:
Andrew, bless his heart, has a wonderful
dinner party planned for my birthday.
Then on April 5th through the 7th, I’m a
guest speaker at The Beatles NY Metro
Fest. The 11th and 12th, we’re up in New
York City visiting friends and aiding animal
rescue. The 14th will find me at Java
and Gems on Centre Street as we launch
a friend’s book off into the wonderful
world of art and poetry. April 17th, I
leave on my nine-country book tour of
Great Britain and Central Europe. April
18th, I arrive in Manchester, England to
teach at Hindsford School, the same
school I teach to from our own Carson
School in that marvelous “Distance
Learning” program headed by teachers
extraordinaire, Francine Eisenmann and
Nancy Tryon. April 20th, I’m in Liverpool,
the land of the Fab Four, for the official
UK kick-off for my book, “Once
Upon a Time in Liverpool.” Then it’s off
to Central Europe on the 24th, with subsequent
book signings in Amsterdam,
Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany,

France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy.
Then we’re back home in time for a
fabulous Cinco de Mayo gala!
So when does the dust ever get a
chance to settle? Hopefully never.
Now I’m not saying that a little downtime
is a bad thing. I myself enjoy many
a peace-filled, relaxing moment, but this
Go-Go-Go gal is just who I am and, with
any luck, who I’ll be until my last day
here on Planet Earth.
And when that final day arrives, I want
to be able to stand in front of God with a
smile on my face and say, “Father, I lived
a full life. I gave it all I had. And even during
some very tough times when I
thought I didn’t have any more left to
give, or even know where to look to see
where I lost it, I heard you tell me to
reach down deep into my heart and, you
know what? Miraculously, there’s where
I found even more love to give, more
time to cherish, more fun, more joy, more
of a life worth living to have and to share
with others.”
Yes, I want to be able to say in all
honesty, “Lord, I used everything you
gave me.”
So, call me over-worked, over-zealous,
over the top, or just plain old goofy.
But as one of my favorite authors of
all time, Erma Bombeck, once said,
“Seize the moment. Remember all those
women on the Titanic who waved off the
dessert cart.”
So now my friends, please pardon me
as I end this column and head over to my
favorite restaurant… straight toward
their dessert cart.
