Page 14 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN April 2013 Pre-K / Kindergarten Evening Registration Scheduled for Thursday Evening, April 18 Pennsauken Public Schools has scheduled their annual evening registration session for Pre-K and Kindergarten students for the 2013/2014 school year. Registration will take place on Thursday evening, April 18, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Carson Elementary School on Garfield Avenue. This will be the only registration session scheduled for enrollment in our Pre-K or Kindergarten programs for September. All Pennsauken residents with children who will be eligible for Pre-K or Kindergarten in September 2013 may register during this evening registration. Children who are four years old on or before October 1, 2013 are eligible for the half-day Pre-Kindergarten program. Children who are five years old on or before October 1, 2013 are eligible for the full-day Kindergarten program. As part of the evening, the school district has invited local organizations to provide information to parents of young children, including organizations that provide before and after school day care services for the full day students in our district. The local PTA organizations will also be on hand with information. To register your child you will need to bring the following information: • Proof of Pennsauken Residency **IF YOU OWN YOUR HOME** One of the following documents is the only acceptable Proof of Residency for Home Owners: — Current Mortgage Statement — Current Property Tax Bill — Deed — Settlement Papers **IF YOU RENT OR LIVE WITH RELATIVES OR FRIENDS** Please bring the following paperwork with you: — Rental Lease — Driver’s License with Pennsauken Address — Two pieces of mail with the Pennsauken address listed on it. (Examples - Telephone Bill, PSE&G, Bank Statement, Credit Card Statement, or Water Bill) • Child’s immunization records • Child’s original birth certificate Volunteers will be available to watch the children while parents/guardians complete the registration. DPT or DTaP vaccine 3 doses and 1 booster 2. Polio vaccine 2 doses and 1 booster 3. Measles vaccine* 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 4. Mumps vaccine* 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 5. Rubella vaccine* 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 6. HIB vaccine 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 7. Varicella vaccine (chicken pox) 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 8. PCV vaccine 1 dose (must be given on/after 1st birthday) 9. Influenza Vaccine 1 dose – must be given between 9/1 and (pneumococcal vaccine) 12/31 of pre-school year(s) Kindergarten Entrance Requirements 1. DPT or DtaP vaccine 3 doses and 1 booster (must be given on/after 4th birthday) or any 5 or more doses 2. Varicella vaccine (chicken pox) 1 dose given on/after 1st birthday * Children usually receive these vaccines in combination (MMR) For advertising rates & information call 662-5100 Dance Fitness Friday At Longfellow School Longfellow students enjoy Dance Fitness Friday with Student School Nurse Catherine Winans. Under the direction of Longfellow’s School Nurse Joanne Conn and Student School Nurse Catherine Winans, the students of Longfellow enjoy Dance Fitness Friday. All students, kindergarten through fourth grade, who want to participate along with the nurses, teachers, and educational assistants, have an opportunity to do so during indoor recess. Dance Fitness Friday is an event that was planned to promote physical fitness. It is a great chance for the students to have fun and exercise during the winter months when recess is often held inside. Student School Nurse Catherine Winans said, “Dance Fitness Friday is a great way for the student to have fun and learn about the importance of exercise.” Being physically active at least once a day is very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle; this event is just one more way that the students can do that. Everyone enjoys dancing together and burning calories. Students from Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Dustman, Mrs. Mozee, and Mrs. Worrell’s classes dressed as if they were 100 years old! April 2013 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN Page 15 Black History Month Comes Alive At Roosevelt On Feb. 22, Roosevelt Elementary held its third annual Blacks in Wax Black History Program. The purpose of the program is to educate the students of the school about African Americans who have impacted the history of the United States. It serves as the culminating activity for a research project the students complete in school. This year’s project was cross-curricular, involving the work of the Art Teacher A captive audience learns about voting rights activist and civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer. Mr. Veston, Computer Teacher Mr. Seidel, Mrs. Smith-Uibel and Mrs. Ben-Abdallah’s third grade classes, and Mrs. Dicupe’s fourth grade class. Fourth grade students used their research to write an informational research paper, create a timeline, and compose a speech that they would recite during the program. Third grade students had the option to create a poster or create a speech and be a wax figure in the program. A timeline of jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong done in Mr. Seidel’s computer class, along with a picture motif of “Satchmo,” done in Mr. Veston’s art class. Never was that more evident than on Friday, March 8 in a lovely little town called Somerset, NJ, when the beautiful banquet area of The Hotel Somerset-Bridgewater was filled with teachers during the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children’s (NJAGC) 22nd Annual Conference. One of the evening’s most cherished moments came during the annual awards dinner, when Pennsauken’s very own Francine Eisenmann was named Educator of the Year. Being a Pennsauken girl myself, and covering an event honoring someone I not only work with at Carson School’s “Distance Learning” program, but who I also call my very dear friend, it was a A student’s informational poster on Oprah Winfrey. particular joy for me to be there. Francine Eisenmann is a familiar face in our lovely little town of Pennsauken. She has been an educator in our Pennsauken Township schools for the past thirty-four years. Over the years, Francine taught both third and fourth grades; inclusive classes; basic skills reading; facilitated workshops for teachers; wrote numerous curriculum guides; and was always more than willing to lend a hand to any student, aide, or fellow educator as needed. She has always been known for her kindness, compassion, and generosity. She currently teaches gifted language arts at Carson School. “I am most fortunate to be teaching in one of New Jersey’s finest programs,” says Eisenmann. “Our model is unique, in that I see my students every day. This day would not have been successful without the collaboration between the various teachers and the hard work of all the students. Famous scientists and doctors Charles Drew, Garrett Morgan, Guion “Guy” Bluford, Jr., and Lewis Latimer. Read Across America Celebration At Carson School On March 5, guest readers visited G.H. Carson School to help celebrate Read Across America. Guests from around town read to classes and inspired a love of reading in their students. Members of the Board of Education, fire department, school district administrators, Superintendent Martinez, as well as many others, were invited to join in this celebration of reading. This annual event is always a highlight for our students. This year, Carson School is celebrating Read Across America by reading the route of the Iditarod. Students and staff are reading 998 minutes to follow the 998 miles of the Iditarod-South trail from Anchorage to Nome. Guest readers shared books about the Iditarod and dogsled racing, as well as many of their own childhood favorite stories.
