Cost for a space, the width and length of a parking spot, is $25. Tables will be available for rent for $5, or you can bring your own table. Tents for sun protection are okay. April 2013 ALL AROUND PENNSAUKEN Page 23 Composting A Natural Way To Feed Your Soil By Kathleen Harvey, Owner, Plant Artistry, LLC Gardens are a constant work in progress, and like us, need to be maintained to be healthy. Making your own compost lessens the amount of garbage in our landfills, provides nutrients to feed your soil, balances the pH, and adjusts soil texture for proper water retention and aeration. The Difference Between Compost And Mulch Mulch sits on top of the soil and is usually composed of wood chips or licorice root. Its purpose is to help retain water, keep soil at a more even temperature to reduce plant heaving in winter, and for weed prevention in summer. Compost is blended into the soil, amending it to help bring soil conditions closer to optimal for plants. Benefits Of Compost Versus Synthetic Fertilizers Compost contains nutrients that are often absent in synthetic fertilizers. Compost releases nutrients slowly, unlike synthetic fertilizers which can burn roots if provided in too high of a concentration. Compost buffers the soil, neutralizing both acid and alkaline soils, helping to bring pH levels to the optimum range for nutrient availability to plants. Compostenriched soil retains mineral nutrients better than synthetic fertilizer, which can run into storm drains and pollute waterways. How To Make Compost Making your own compost isn’t as difficult or smelly as some people think, if done correctly. The important thing to remember is to use ingredients in the proper proportion just like any other recipe. Ingredients for composting include water, air and carbon- and nitrogen-rich materials. The fastest way to produce fertile, sweet-smelling compost is to maintain a lot more carbon than nitrogen. If the C:N ratio is too high (i.e., excess carbon), decomposition slows down. When the C:N ratio is too low (i.e., excess nitrogen), it creates an unpleasant odor. Now, ingredient details. High carbon materials tend to be brown and dry (e.g., leaves we collect in the fall). High nitrogen materials tend to be green or colorful and wet, such as fruit and vegetable rinds or peels. Examples are non-meat kitchen waste, egg shells, used coffee grounds and tea leaves, or even grass clippings if they haven’t been coated in synthetic weed killers. Add just enough water to dampen the mixture. Oxygen in the air provides the decomposition process. Optionally, soil and earthworms from your garden can be added to speed up the process. Compost containers can be a manufactured bin, home made box, plastic trash can with holes drilled in the side and bottom, or simply a pile in a remote corner of the yard. Compost Preparation Two composting bins are best, one for finished or “cooked” compost, the second for “raw” ingredients. The decomposition process is aided by shredding the plant matter, adding water, and ensuring proper aeration by regularly turning the mixture. Fancy composting bins can be tumbled to mix the entire batch; it’s my preference, because it’s easier. Contents of simple composting bins must be stirred manually, using a pitch fork or shovel. Worms ingest partly composted material, but also continually re-create aeration and drainage tunnels as they move through the compost. Compost tea is a liquid extract or a dissolved solution but not simply a suspension of compost. It is made by steeping compost in water for 3–7 days.
