Local Man is First in Region to Receive Kidney Tranplant in Matching Program Paul Meyer, of Taylor Mill, KY, became the first person in the Greater Cincinnati area to receive a kidney transplant through a new living organ donor matching program. Although Mr. Meyer’s wife, Rose, was willing to donate a kidney, her blood type was not a match for her husband, but it was a match for Josephine Vollmer of Toledo. Her son, Daniel, was not a match for her. The paired donation program launched in November 2004 by the Ohio Solid Organ Transplantation Consortium and its computer programs (designed at the University of Cincinnati) found that Daniel's kidney would work for Paul Meyer, and Rose's would work for Josephine Vollmer, so the families agreed to trade organ donors. On April 11, 2005, a team of surgeons in Cincinnati (Drs. Steve Woodle, Mark Thomas, and Rino Munda) removed Daniel's kidney and transplanted it into Paul Meyer. In Toledo, at the Medical College of Ohio, another team removed Rose's kidney and transplanted it into Josephine Vollmer. All operations were successful. Kidneys can now be removed through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, and Rose was back on her feet within two days. The entire event was covered by CNN, which aired stories about the program on two consecutive days. Busuttil, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UCLA, presented the first Heekin Family Lectureship in Transplantation on August 30. The lectureship is funded by a gift from Maureen Heekin, who received a liver transplant at University Hospital in January, 2004. The annual event will alternate between liver transplant surgery and hepatology presentations. Dr. Busuttil, perhaps the world authority on liver transplantation, established the liver transplant program at UCLA in 1984 and has trained more than 50 fellows in liver transplant, 14 of whom serve as directors of liver transplant programs, including Steve Rudich, M.D., at University Hospital. Former “Miss America” Attends UC Liver Forum Heather Renee French Henry, former Miss America, the wife of former Kentucky Lt. Gov. Steve Henry, and official spokesperson for Hepatitis C Awareness, attended the UC Liver Forum on June 11, 2005, held at Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Nearly 100 local caregivers attended the one-day forum sponsored by the UC Division of Digestive Diseases and UC College of Medicine to cover the management of hepatitis B and C. Hepatitis C is a virus spread by exposure to blood or body fluids. Eighty percent of sufferers show no early symptoms. If undiagnosed and untreated, however, it can destroy liver function. Parag Bhanot, M.D., resident in general surgery, was named Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident for 2005. Richard J. Kagan, M.D., Chief of the Division of Burn Surgery and Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Cincinnati, was invited to address the Israel Defense Group and the Ministry of Health in Tel Aviv, Israel, May 1-5, 2005. Dr. Kagan also entered negotiations to provide burn care training to Israeli physicians via the Shriners Hospital's burn fellowship program. On June 1-3, 2005, Dr. Kagan traveled to Yokohama, Japan, where he was an invited speaker at the Japanese Burn Association meeting. Dr. Kagan spoke on the clinical effectiveness of cryopreserved skin. Richard Kagan, MD At the American Burn Association (ABA) meeting, May 10-13, 2005, Dr. Kagan was elected to the office of 1st vice-president and will ascend to the presidency in spring, 2007. Dr. Kagan has also been appointed to the ABA Membership Advisory Committee. Robert D. Marciani, D.M.D., Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, will serve as Visiting Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, on February 2-4, 2006. Dr. Marciani will present a lecture on February 2 entitled “Restoring Form & Function with Dental Implants in Facial Trauma & Tumor Patients.” On February 4, he will present the William Ware Lecture entitled “Obesity and the Practice of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.” Jeffrey Matthews, M.D., Chairman, was invited session chairperson for a FASEB summer conference (Gastrointestinal Tract: Innovations in GI Research and Therapy) held in Denver, August 2005. John Mehall, M.D., Cardiothoracic Resident, presented “Expanding the use of closed chest bilateral pulmonary vein isolation and left atrial appendage excision” at the June 2005 ISMICS (International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) meeting. Likith Reddy, D.D.S., M.D., Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, presented an abstract entitled “Comparison of Millard Rotational Advancement Variant Incision and the Pfeifer Wavy Incision for Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair” at the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Boston, MA, September 20-24, 2005. Amy Reed, M.D., Division of Vascular Surgery, is Invited Editor/contributor for the annual Yearbook for Vascular Surgery 2006. Steve Rudich, MD Awards and Achievements Steve Rudich, M.D., Division of Transplant Surgery, gave 4 talks at the recent International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) meeting in Los Angeles. This is an international, yearly meeting of all physicians involved in liver transplant. One of his talks (“The HCV positive organ donor: US liver transplant outcomes”) was chosen to receive a Travel Award from the ILTS to attend the meeting. Travel awards were given for the top 1% of all submitted abstracts. Dr. Rudich is a member of the UNOS Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplant Committee, the national body which makes liver organ allocation policy. He has been a member of the committee for two years and is actively involved in various subcommittees of this body. It is a rare honor and privilege to be chosen for this committee. Dr. Rudich also was nominated to represent our UNOS region (Region 10) on this committee. As of August 1, 2005, the liver transplant program is in the Anthem (Blue Cross and Shield) network as a Center of Excellence for Liver Transplantation. This significant accomplishment is the result of good outcomes from an excellent transplant program. Brad W. Warner, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Director of the Pediatric Surgery Residency Training Program, was elected in April 2005 to the American Surgical Association (ASA), the nation's oldest and most prestigious surgical organization. Fellowship recognizes a surgeon's contributions to the science and practice of surgery. Kevin Yakuboff, M.D., Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery, was elected an Active Fellow in the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) at their recent 84th annual meeting.
