Parag Bhanot, M.D., resident in general surgery, was named Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) Outstanding<br />

Laparoendoscopic Resident for 2005.<br />

Richard J. Kagan, M.D., Chief of the Division of Burn Surgery and Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for<br />

Children - Cincinnati, was invited <strong>to</strong> address the Israel Defense <strong>Group</strong> and the Ministry of Health in Tel Aviv,<br />

Israel, May 1-5, 2005. Dr. Kagan also entered negotiations <strong>to</strong> provide burn care training <strong>to</strong> Israeli physicians<br />

via the Shriners Hospital's burn fellowship program.<br />

On June 1-3, 2005, Dr. Kagan traveled <strong>to</strong> Yokohama, Japan, where he was an invited speaker at the Japanese<br />

Burn Association meeting. Dr. Kagan spoke on the clinical effectiveness of cryopreserved skin.<br />

Richard Kagan, MD At the American Burn Association (ABA) meeting, May 10-13, 2005, Dr. Kagan was elected <strong>to</strong> the office of<br />

1st vice-president and will ascend <strong>to</strong> the presidency in spring, 2007. Dr. Kagan has also been appointed <strong>to</strong><br />

the ABA Membership Advisory Committee.<br />

Robert D. Marciani, D.M.D., Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, will serve as Visiting Professor in the<br />

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, on February 2-4, 2006. Dr. Marciani will<br />

present a lecture on February 2 entitled “Res<strong>to</strong>ring Form & Function with Dental Implants in Facial <strong>Trauma</strong> & Tumor Patients.”<br />

On February 4, he will present the William Ware Lecture entitled “Obesity and the Practice of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.”<br />

Jeffrey Matthews, M.D., Chairman, was invited session chairperson for a FASEB summer conference (Gastrointestinal Tract:<br />

Innovations in GI <strong>Research</strong> and Therapy) held in Denver, August 2005.<br />

John Mehall, M.D., Cardiothoracic Resident, presented “Expanding the use of closed chest bilateral pulmonary vein isolation and<br />

left atrial appendage excision” at the June 2005 ISMICS (International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) meeting.<br />

Likith Reddy, D.D.S., M.D., Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, presented an abstract entitled “Comparison of Millard<br />

Rotational Advancement Variant Incision and the Pfeifer Wavy Incision for Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair” at the 87th Annual Meeting<br />

of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Bos<strong>to</strong>n, MA, September 20-24, 2005.<br />

Amy Reed, M.D., Division of Vascular Surgery, is Invited Edi<strong>to</strong>r/contribu<strong>to</strong>r for the annual Yearbook for Vascular Surgery 2006.<br />

Awards and Achievements<br />

Steve Rudich, M.D., Division of Transplant Surgery, gave 4 talks at the recent International Liver Transplant<br />

Society (ILTS) meeting in Los Angeles. This is an international, yearly meeting of all physicians involved<br />

in liver transplant. One of his talks (“The HCV positive organ donor: US liver transplant outcomes”) was<br />

chosen <strong>to</strong> receive a Travel Award from the ILTS <strong>to</strong> attend the meeting. Travel awards were given for the <strong>to</strong>p<br />

1% of all submitted abstracts.<br />

Dr. Rudich is a member of the UNOS Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplant Committee, the national body<br />

which makes liver organ allocation policy. He has been a member of the committee for two years and is<br />

actively involved in various subcommittees of this body. It is a rare honor and privilege <strong>to</strong> be chosen for this<br />

committee. Dr. Rudich also was nominated <strong>to</strong> represent our UNOS region (Region 10) on this committee.<br />

As of August 1, 2005, the liver transplant program is in the Anthem (Blue Cross and Shield) network as a Center of Excellence for<br />

Liver Transplantation. This significant accomplishment is the result of good outcomes from an excellent transplant program.<br />

Brad W. Warner, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Direc<strong>to</strong>r of the Pediatric Surgery Residency Training Program, was elected in<br />

April 2005 <strong>to</strong> the American Surgical Association (ASA), the nation's oldest and most prestigious surgical organization. Fellowship<br />

recognizes a surgeon's contributions <strong>to</strong> the science and practice of surgery.<br />

Kevin Yakuboff, M.D., Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery, was elected an Active Fellow in the American<br />

Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) at their recent 84th annual meeting.
