“Summer Surgery Experience”<br />

Students Exposed <strong>to</strong> Cardiac Surgery<br />

The Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery, in tandem with the<br />

Dean's Office, offered a new course called “Summer Surgery<br />

Experience at UC.” This two-week program teaches 10<br />

undergraduates from various colleges the fine art of surgery.<br />

Participants are exposed <strong>to</strong> cardiac ana<strong>to</strong>my and physiology,<br />

learning cardiac diagnostic techniques, receiving hands-on<br />

experience in the clinical skills lab, learning about the<br />

DaVinci robot, and shadowing in the operating room. The<br />

students also perform library research on several clinical<br />

cases and give a presentation at the close of the program.<br />

Walter Merrill, MD, and John Flege Jr., MD, are sponsors<br />

of the program. Medical student teaching assistants Justin<br />

Stevens and Karen Ayres provide guidance, and Karen<br />

Christian, academic direc<strong>to</strong>r in the Dean's Office, serves as<br />

the program coordina<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Thoracic Surgeon Joins UC<br />

Expert in Managing Mediastinal Tumors<br />

Sandra L. Starnes, M.D., has<br />

joined the University of Cincinnati<br />

Department of Surgery in the<br />

Division of Thoracic Surgery as<br />

Assistant Professor of Surgery. Her<br />

focus is thoracic surgery and she<br />

has specific interest and training in<br />

managing mediastinal tumors.<br />

Dr. Starnes received her undergraduate<br />

degree in Biochemistry<br />

from the University of Illinois-<br />

Champaign-Urbana, and her M.D. Sandra L. Starnes, M.D.<br />

degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She<br />

completed her General Surgery Residency at St. Joseph Mercy<br />

Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a <strong>Research</strong><br />

Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of<br />

Washing<strong>to</strong>n in Seattle. Dr. Starnes performed her Thoracic<br />

Surgery Residency at Indiana University.<br />

Dr. Starnes served as a Captain in the Medical Corps of the<br />

United States Army National Guard from 1992-2001. She has<br />

won numerous teaching and research awards. In addition <strong>to</strong><br />

seven articles in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Starnes has made<br />

nearly a dozen presentations at national meetings related <strong>to</strong> thoracic<br />

surgery. She is a member of the American Medical<br />

Association, American College of Chest Physicians, Frederick<br />

A. Coller Surgical Society, and Candidate <strong>Group</strong> of the<br />

American College of Surgeons.<br />

Dr. Starnes is certified by the American Board of Surgery. She<br />

will see patients at the Barrett Cancer Center and University<br />

Pointe, where she may be reached at (513)-584-1387.<br />

New Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident<br />

Jeffrey V. Garrett, M.D., has joined<br />

the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery<br />

as a resident in cardiothoracic surgery,<br />

the second in the program. Dr. Garrett<br />

received undergraduate and Masters<br />

degrees in Psychology. He received his<br />

medical degree from the University of<br />

Oklahoma College of Medicine. His<br />

general surgery residency was served at<br />

Jeff Garrett, M.D.<br />

Vanderbilt University Medical Center,<br />

where he won the Joseph W. & Bonnie J. Graves Award for<br />

Excellence in Teaching in June 2005. He won the Outstanding<br />

Surgery Student award in 2000 and a Surgery Scholarship in<br />

1999 at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Dr.<br />

Garrett is an Eagle Scout.
