Clinical Collaboration Expert<br />

Joins UC Department of Surgery<br />

Paul M. Uhlig, M.D., MPA, will join UC as Vice President,<br />

Associate Chief of Staff for Clinical Improvement of University<br />

Hospital around September 19th, 2005. Dr. Uhlig, a cardiothoracic<br />

surgeon, was a member of the Departments of Surgery and Biomedical<br />

Engineering at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Bos<strong>to</strong>n. His<br />

professional interests include patient safety, health care innovation,<br />

and care process transformation. In Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2002, Dr. Uhlig and the<br />

cardiac surgery team he led at Concord<br />

Hospital, Concord, New Hampshire,<br />

received the John M. Eisenberg Patient<br />

Safety Award for System Innovation<br />

given by the National Quality Forum<br />

and the Joint Commission on<br />

Accreditation of Health Care<br />

Organizations. This award was for<br />

developing the Concord Collaborative<br />

Care Model, a method of collaborative<br />

practiced based on human fac<strong>to</strong>rs science,<br />

with active involvement of<br />

patients and families in all aspects of<br />

care and decision making.<br />

Dr. Uhlig will report directly <strong>to</strong> Reuven Pasternak, M.D., the new<br />

Chief Medical Officer of the Alliance and <strong>to</strong> James Kingsbury,<br />

Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r of University Hospital. He will work in the areas<br />

of performance improvement, collaborative rounds, care team building,<br />

NewyoU initiatives, patient safety and new care models. Dr.<br />

Uhlig will also be on the College of Medicine faculty in the<br />

Department of Surgery as a cardiothoracic surgeon, and will work<br />

with the U.C. Institute for the <strong>Study</strong> of Health.<br />

Dr. Uhlig is well known <strong>to</strong> University Hospital; he has assisted in<br />

facilitating "Collaborative Rounds" and brought his Harvard<br />

research team <strong>to</strong> University Hospital <strong>to</strong> study our rounds. He has<br />

presented at several Grand Rounds and spoke <strong>to</strong> our NewyoU<br />

Physician Leaders <strong>Group</strong> and Medical Direc<strong>to</strong>r Training Program.<br />

Dr. Uhlig received his MD degree from the University of Kansas<br />

School of Medicine, where he received the Thomas G. Orr award as<br />

outstanding student in surgery. He completed his residency training<br />

in general surgery and general thoracic surgery at the Massachusetts<br />

General Hospital, and in cardiothoracic surgery at Indiana<br />

University. He was also a research fellow in cardiovascular physiology<br />

at the Cardiovascular <strong>Research</strong> Institute at the University of<br />

California, San Francisco. For the academic year 1996-1997 Dr.<br />

Uhlig was the Thoracic Surgery Foundation Alley-Sheridan Scholarin-Residence<br />

at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at<br />

Harvard University, where he studied health care policy and<br />

received a Master of Public Administration degree.<br />

A fourth-generation physician, Dr. Uhlig and his wife, Anna, have<br />

four sons.<br />

UC Surgeons Participate in<br />

Community Cancer Education Day<br />

UC Surgeons participated at UC Community Cancer<br />

Education Day held Saturday, June 25, 2005, at the<br />

Kingsgate Conference Center. Faculty members included<br />

Drs. Syed Ahmad, Bruce Bracken, James Donovan, John<br />

Kitzmiller, Andrew Lowy, Michael Reed, Steven Rudich,<br />

and Elizabeth Shaughnessy.<br />
