The Potters Council is pleased to announce its first juried exhibition of members’ work. This show<br />
will be held in conjunction with NCECA 2010 in Philadelphia.<br />
The name of the show is “FIll-adelphia.” The theme combines the very utilitarian word “fill”<br />
with the Greek word “Adelphia,” which means a group of the members of a particular profession<br />
or brotherhood. We are challenging our members to explore every meaning of the word “Fill.”<br />
Interpretations can be as functional as a beer mug, as symbolic as a mother’s arms or as metaphorical<br />
as a box of rain. We look forward to seeing humor as well. We hope to see the diversity, skill and<br />
commitment of our members expressed through this broad and inclusive theme.<br />
Sherman Hall, editor of <strong>Ceramic</strong>s Monthly will be the juror for the show. His vast experience with<br />
contemporary and historical ceramics makes him uniquely qualified to choose a fantastic show from<br />
our members’ work.<br />
We expect to display at least 30 pieces of our members’ pottery in A Show of Hands Gallery at 1006<br />
Pine Street in Philadelphia, PA. All entrants must be Potters Council Members both at the time of<br />
submission and at the time of the show.<br />

2008 has been a busy year for everyone and I hope the economy has not wreaked havoc on your<br />
seasonal sales. The Board members of the Potters Council have been working on an exhibition<br />
proposal for the 2010 NCECA Conference in Philadelphia. We hope the proposal will be accepted by<br />
the NCECA Conference Committee. It will offer members the opportunity to participate in a juried<br />
exhibition that would be included in the NCECA program and bus routes. The gallery is in easy<br />
walking distance to the conference center, roughly seven blocks south of Marlet Street in the Antique<br />
District, along Pine St.<br />
Our proposed exhibition entitled “FIll-adelphia,” will be open to members of the Potters Council to<br />
submit for inclusion in the juried exhibition. We have secured Sherman Hall, Editor of <strong>Ceramic</strong>s<br />
Monthly, as the juror. We are confident that he will select a quality and diverse selection from the<br />
entries. Included in this issue of the Potters Council Newsletter are the further details. We have also<br />
put all the information online for easy reference.<br />
We know that this exhibition will show the wide variety and professional caliber of the Potters Council<br />
Membership. The opportunity to exhibit during the NCECA conference is an excellent promotional<br />
tool for members as well. The Gallery owners are excited by the prospect of the exhibition and sales are<br />
encouraged. I would like to thank our Board member, Chris Campbell, for scouting out an appropriate<br />
gallery for our exhibition. I hope people will read the exhibition requirements and consider entering<br />
the show.<br />
In the meantime, the Phoenix NCECA conference will be coming around the corner in April. I<br />
hope people will stop by the Potters Council booth that includes <strong>Ceramic</strong>s Monthly, Pottery Making<br />
Illustrated and <strong>Ceramic</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>Daily</strong>. Our Board members will be there to answer questions. We have<br />

Elhan Ergin of Istanbul, Turkey is a ceramic<br />

recently showed her work at the Tuyap Art<br />
Fair. The ceramic installation consisted of nine<br />
terra cotta heads and metal (iron) construction<br />
entitled Thinking Heads.<br />
Denizhan Ozer who resides in London, curated<br />

the world with the intention of establishing<br />
a dialog between the east and west through<br />

The Steamboat Springs <strong>Arts</strong> Council is hosting an International Teapot Show<br />
featuring 36 ceramic artists and 86 teapots from across the United States, British<br />
Columbia and the United Kingdom. Potters Council Member and Curator Deb<br />
Babcock selected artists based upon style, geographic region, and craftsmanship.<br />
The show includes long-time, well-known artists such as Elaine Coleman, Tom<br />
Coleman, Sylvie Granatelli, Tim See, Sarah Jaeger, and Sandi Pierantozzi, as<br />

Serving on the Potters Council Board is an opportunity for me to share and contribute my energy, ideas, experience<br />
and time to an organization that is full of great potential. I joined the Potters Council in 2003, have been a presenter<br />
for the regional conferences and now I want to have a more active role. I bring a unique combination of experiences as<br />
a working studio artist, workshop presenter, educator, author and curator. Potters Council is positioned to be a stronger<br />
voice and presence in the field of ceramics and I feel I can be a strong asset in this effort. It would be my honor to serve<br />
as an active Potters Council Board member and contribute to its growing success and relevance.<br />
HAlldOR HJAlMARsON – pHOENIx, AZ<br />
Potters Council provides invaluable services to the clay art community; offering potters access to insurance programs<br />
and credit card processing are just two of the many. I have participated in Council programs and have used some of our<br />
services. More important though, our Council promotes the craft to the wider community and encourages artistic and<br />
creative growth among participating members. I would like the opportunity to support these services and to promote<br />
others which might benefit our tribe of potters.<br />
I have maintained a studio in the Roosevelt Historic Neighborhood of central Phoenix for the past 36 yeas, and have<br />
taught ceramic arts in secondary schools, as well as community colleges. I hold a MA in Art Education from Arizona<br />
State University and have studied and documented clay art in Korea and Japan.<br />
lOgAN JOHNsON, YAkIMA, wA<br />
For me pottery and ceramic art has become a lifetime learning experience. Like many potters today I started with a<br />
simple home studio predominately producing pottery for sale at local craft fairs and for special orders. My work has<br />
slowly evolved from simple pottery to both functional and non-functional ceramic art.<br />
I have started my own a small pottery and supply business with a gallery, ceramics tools and supplies, and a studio<br />
where I offer private lessons. Within my community I have established a commitment to expanding the knowledge<br />
and understanding of pottery and the ceramic arts. A few of you may know me from the online group Clayart and<br />
from the annual NCECA conferences. When asked what I could bring to the Potters Council my only response can be<br />
enthusiasm. I will do my very best to fulfill the responsibilities of being a member of the Board.<br />
