MEMBER BENEFIT HIgHlIgHT
JURIEd sHOw AT NCECA 2010 FOR pOTTERs COUNCIl
MEMBERs ONlY
BY CHRIs CAMpBEll, BOARd MEMBER
The Potters Council is pleased to announce its first juried exhibition of members’ work. This show
will be held in conjunction with NCECA 2010 in Philadelphia.
The name of the show is “FIll-adelphia.” The theme combines the very utilitarian word “fill”
with the Greek word “Adelphia,” which means a group of the members of a particular profession
or brotherhood. We are challenging our members to explore every meaning of the word “Fill.”
Interpretations can be as functional as a beer mug, as symbolic as a mother’s arms or as metaphorical
as a box of rain. We look forward to seeing humor as well. We hope to see the diversity, skill and
commitment of our members expressed through this broad and inclusive theme.
Sherman Hall, editor of Ceramics Monthly will be the juror for the show. His vast experience with
contemporary and historical ceramics makes him uniquely qualified to choose a fantastic show from
our members’ work.
We expect to display at least 30 pieces of our members’ pottery in A Show of Hands Gallery at 1006
Pine Street in Philadelphia, PA. All entrants must be Potters Council Members both at the time of
submission and at the time of the show.
For complete details, entry qualifications and submission requirements go to the Potters Council
website, www.potterscouncil.org. Deadline for entries is July 1, 2009.
ANd lOOkINg TO THE FUTURE
MARCIA sElsOR, pOTTERs COUNCIl pREsIdENT
2008 has been a busy year for everyone and I hope the economy has not wreaked havoc on your
seasonal sales. The Board members of the Potters Council have been working on an exhibition
proposal for the 2010 NCECA Conference in Philadelphia. We hope the proposal will be accepted by
the NCECA Conference Committee. It will offer members the opportunity to participate in a juried
exhibition that would be included in the NCECA program and bus routes. The gallery is in easy
walking distance to the conference center, roughly seven blocks south of Marlet Street in the Antique
District, along Pine St.
Our proposed exhibition entitled “FIll-adelphia,” will be open to members of the Potters Council to
submit for inclusion in the juried exhibition. We have secured Sherman Hall, Editor of Ceramics
Monthly, as the juror. We are confident that he will select a quality and diverse selection from the
entries. Included in this issue of the Potters Council Newsletter are the further details. We have also
put all the information online for easy reference.
We know that this exhibition will show the wide variety and professional caliber of the Potters Council
Membership. The opportunity to exhibit during the NCECA conference is an excellent promotional
tool for members as well. The Gallery owners are excited by the prospect of the exhibition and sales are
encouraged. I would like to thank our Board member, Chris Campbell, for scouting out an appropriate
gallery for our exhibition. I hope people will read the exhibition requirements and consider entering
the show.
In the meantime, the Phoenix NCECA conference will be coming around the corner in April. I
hope people will stop by the Potters Council booth that includes Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making
Illustrated and Ceramic Arts Daily. Our Board members will be there to answer questions. We have
added some great benefits this year; for example, health insurance. Please stop by and give us your
views, suggestions, or just visit. I wish all of you a peaceful and enjoyable 2009.
This winter visit Art House Inc. for a one-day professional workshop taught
by prominent and influential North East Ohio artists. As part of our Self-
Employed Artists’ Network Programming, nationally recognized artist and
Potters Council Member Eva Kwong will present a demo and hands-on
workshop. Eva will demonstrate how she achieves amazing ornamental surfaces
using slips and underglazes, stencils and stamps. For more information visit,
www.arthouseinc.org or email Stephanie Kluk at skulk@arthouseinc.org.
Happiness is a Warm Extruder at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
surface decoration, including stencils, slip inlay and stretched slabs. For more
BOARd MEMBER CANdIdATEs
As of March 2009, two board member terms will be expiring; Nan Rothwell (serving as Past-
President) and Mark Issenberg (Vice-President). We would like to thank you both for your excellent
service in building Potters Council into the remarkable organization it is today. Both of you have
truly made a difference!
We have four compelling candidates who are ready to represent members for the next three years.
CHRIs CAMpBEll – RAlEIgH, NC
During these challenging economic times, it is more important than ever for ceramic artists belong to an organization
that cares about them. A group that has their best interests at heart whether it be in discounts, insurance or education.
This is why I would like to stay on as a Board Member. I can help the Potters Council remain a strong, positive support
system for ceramic artists.
*Note: Chris Campbell is eligible to run for another term on the board because she filled a one-year term due to a previous board member’s
inability to finish out her term.
pAUl wANdlEss – BROOkHAVEN, pA
Serving on the Potters Council Board is an opportunity for me to share and contribute my energy, ideas, experience
and time to an organization that is full of great potential. I joined the Potters Council in 2003, have been a presenter
for the regional conferences and now I want to have a more active role. I bring a unique combination of experiences as
a working studio artist, workshop presenter, educator, author and curator. Potters Council is positioned to be a stronger
voice and presence in the field of ceramics and I feel I can be a strong asset in this effort. It would be my honor to serve
as an active Potters Council Board member and contribute to its growing success and relevance.
HAlldOR HJAlMARsON – pHOENIx, AZ
Potters Council provides invaluable services to the clay art community; offering potters access to insurance programs
and credit card processing are just two of the many. I have participated in Council programs and have used some of our
services. More important though, our Council promotes the craft to the wider community and encourages artistic and
creative growth among participating members. I would like the opportunity to support these services and to promote
others which might benefit our tribe of potters.
I have maintained a studio in the Roosevelt Historic Neighborhood of central Phoenix for the past 36 yeas, and have
taught ceramic arts in secondary schools, as well as community colleges. I hold a MA in Art Education from Arizona
State University and have studied and documented clay art in Korea and Japan.
lOgAN JOHNsON, YAkIMA, wA
For me pottery and ceramic art has become a lifetime learning experience. Like many potters today I started with a
simple home studio predominately producing pottery for sale at local craft fairs and for special orders. My work has
slowly evolved from simple pottery to both functional and non-functional ceramic art.
I have started my own a small pottery and supply business with a gallery, ceramics tools and supplies, and a studio
where I offer private lessons. Within my community I have established a commitment to expanding the knowledge
and understanding of pottery and the ceramic arts. A few of you may know me from the online group Clayart and
from the annual NCECA conferences. When asked what I could bring to the Potters Council my only response can be
enthusiasm. I will do my very best to fulfill the responsibilities of being a member of the Board.
