Chris is currently the Site Manager for Eastpack’s Edgecumbe site, and has over eight years industry experience in controlled atmosphere, coolstorage and site management. Chris will officially start at Apata on Monday 10 January, however he will be at our Turntable Hill Road site for a few days prior to Christmas for staff induction. Nicki Paget and Graeme Burnett officially start in their new operational roles on 1 January 2011. Nicki is moving to the role of Satellite Site Manager, which includes management of our Pyes Pa site. Graeme will be relocating up North to take up the reins of our Whangarei Site. We look forward to introducing Chris, Nicki and Graeme to our growers.
NEW VARIETIES: DAMIAN YOUNG, Kiwifruit Grower Services Manager ZESPRI are currently working on the key dates for next year’s new varieties tender process. The dates are expected to be similar to that of 2010, with key information and hectares released around June. Following on from its highly successful first year, the Apata New Varieties programme will continue organising hub groups and technical support Field Days for growers taking part in the NV programme. Our Grower Services team are available to come to your orchard to offer advice on your NV plan. We have cost models we can discuss with you that detail potential cash flow and expected grafting costs. If you require any help with your 2011 application, contact your Apata Grower Services Representative. The following information is taken from The National Bank’s presentation to Apata New Variety growers. It offers some advice when considering investing in New Varieties. Why growers have considered investing in New Varieties? - economic reasons: perceived better returns - spread the risk - everyone else is keen so it must be good - don’t want to miss an opportunity - new challenge Considerations - physical: - suitability of the site, aspect, contour, altitude - early start/main pack? - frost risk, shelter, structures, irrigation etc - financial: - ability to forego cashflow for 1+ years (or more) - risk of variety failure - options/fallbacks - what return is required by you for the risk involved - people: - current physical management ability - financial management - experience with conversion to Hort16A? - require input from consultants or Apata staff? - realistic goals and objectives - are you looking for the silver bullet? Apata New Variety Programme Update Due to the Psa situation in our industry, orchard visits and activities have been minimised to help stop the spread of Psa. To help ensure our New Variety growers are kept up to speed with the latest on-orchard guides and information, we are publishing as much information as possible for you to use as guidance on your orchard. We hope to get back into our New Variety Field Day programme in the New Year once the Psa situation and ongoing management becomes more clearer. Bringing Down Leaders The experience of those who have been involved in the precommercial trials is that getting the new leaders down early is an important step in obtaining a maximum fruiting canopy for next season. Basically the earlier better, growers of G14 reported difficulties in developing secondary laterals if leaders were dropped after the beginning of December. For G3 and G9 they need to be down by the longest day.
