The 25 th Anniversary Celebration of Apata Limited was held
on Wednesday 9 September 2009 – a lucky date according
to one website. Numerologists see the date 09.09.09 as the
number of life. It’s the number of humanity, of coming
together and helping one's fellow man.
And that certainly was the theme of Apata’s 25 th
Anniversary Celebrations.
The values of our Founding Directors Brian Earp, Peter
Mayston, Mike Muller and Jack Tangney were based on
trust, belief and honesty – a drive to be the best, not
necessarily the biggest. It was about creating something to
help their fellow growers grow and prosper.
Thank you to all our shareholders and growers who have
been involved in the research, planning, and delivery of our
25 th Anniversary Celebrations. We’ve discovered many
great stories and photos along the way, and it’s been a real
honour to be part of such a significant part of Apata’s
history.
AGM results
Resolution 1 and 2: Peter Mayston and Paul O’Brien were
re-elected to the Apata Board of Directors.
Resolution 3: That the Company’s Board of Directors were
authorised to fix the auditor’s remuneration.
Resolution 4: The constitution of the company was altered
with immediate effect. The minimum shareholding is now
2,500 shares, and the ratio of shares required per class 1
(export) trays is now 1 share per 3 trays. Resolution 4 is
connected to the board’s intention to implement a bonus
issue of shares, likely to be at or similar to the ratio of 1
new share per 3 existing shares. This will occur prior to the
grower rebate distribution in December this year.
Shareholder Motion: Chairman Dave Goodwin put forward
a Shareholder Motion “That the shareholders present at the
annual meeting of Apata Limited strongly endorse the
continuation of the current New Zealand kiwifruit industry
structure”.
The motion was unanimously agreed upon, and the results
of this shareholder motion will be sent to Minister David
Carter.
WHAT’S INSIDE:
SEPTEMBER 2009
Share Price Review
An independent review of the share price has been
undertaken by Staples Rodway, and their recommendation
was adopted by the board.
The Board of Directors announced that effective from 9
September 2009, the Apata share price increases from $2.17
to $2.30.
25 th Anniversary Dinner
The Apata Board and Management would like to personally
thank all shareholders, growers and industry partners who
attended our 25th Anniversary Dinner.
Over 370 guests, including special guests Trade Minister Tim
Groser, MP Tony Ryall, MP Simon Bridges and Mayors
Stuart Crosby and Ross Patterson, celebrated the success of
Apata's Founding Directors in true style at Baypark Events
Centre in Mount Maunganui.
The night was full of laughs courtesy of MC Jackie Clarke,
and the Lady Killers kept everyone up dancing well after
midnight.
It was a truly special evening – one that we were very
honoured to share with our growers and shareholders.
During the evening Chairman Dave Goodwin announced that
Apata has inaugurated an annual bilateral scholarship
programme between SIKIG in France and Apata to enable
one person from each business to visit the other’s operations
to gain practical insights into growing and fruit management.
SIKIG is a large kiwifruit post-harvest facility in France and
the reciprocal exchange programme will build on a
relationship between the Earps and the Pedelucq family.
Roly Earp and Henri Pedelucq were friends and Brian Earp
and Julien Pedelucq carried on the tradition as
visionaries, driven by an overarching ethos of grower
service.
The late Brian Earp with SIKIG’s Julien Pedelucq.
The bilateral scholarship programme is in honour of Brian
Earp, Apata’s Founding Director, who was a man of vision
and foresight with a hunger for learning and innovation.
He was a person who shared his skills, looked out for his
neighbours and colleagues and had no fear of the future.
He played such a key role in the evolution of this business
– and the industry.
Both the Earp and the Pedelucq families are delighted
with this initiative to facilitate and enhance grower and
post-harvest competencies and knowledge to improve
performance and quality.
The first exchange will take place in November this year,
with an Apata employee travelling to France to work at
SIKIG for six weeks.

Are you Interested in a GPS Map
for your Orchard?
We’d like to know how many growers would
be interested in purchasing GPS maps for
this season. If you are interested please
contact our Grower Services Office on 07
552 0512 or contact your Grower Services
Representative. Their contact details are
listed on the back page of this KiwiLink.
There will be a new grower manual encompassing the Crop Protection programme, KiwiGreen,
GLOBALGAP, and Orchard Production.
If you are a management system owner you will receive a ZESPRI Grower Manual in the post. Other
growers can access the Manual on the www.zespricanopy.com
The Apata GLOBALGAP team will be available to discuss any grower queries at the next Apata
grower field days.
The most important task for GLOBALGAP compliance is to ensure all records of orchard activities are
up to date and filed in an accessible place. Management System Owners must ensure that the
orchard management system is compliant at all times.
We have been advised by ZESPRI that in the next month a selection of 19 growers from across the
industry will be selected at random for an “unannounced audit” from AsureQuality.
If any Apata growers are selected we will contact them as soon as possible and will provide support
for the audit.

Apata Fruit Loss vs Industry (to end of ISO week 36)
The Apata Suppliers Entity Ltd AGM
was held on 1 September 2009 at the
Omokoroa Boat Club.
Over 70 growers turned out to hear
from guest speakers the Hon Tony
Ryall and NZKGI CEO Mike Chapman.
This year there were four candidates
standing for three places on the Entity
Board – David Farr, Stephen McTurk,
Howard Strahan and Mark Mayston.
David, Stephen and Mark were elected
to the Board.
The Entity would like to thank Howard for his contribution to the Entity Board over the past 7
seasons.
Pool Apata 2009 Industry Comparison Apata 2009
ZESPRI Gold 2.48% 4.48% 2.75%
ZESPRI Organic 2.80% 3.50% 3.68%
We are pleased with our better than industry average results and are still confident there is likely to be
an increase in the Green OGR forecast based on fruit quality to-date and our bin store performance.
A back-to-basics approach on harvesting at optimum maturity and accuracy throughout the cool chain
has paid dividends this season.
Apata’s investment in an inventory modeling programme, led by Dr Nigel Banks, Marilyn Haywood and
Wade Hunkin, has made further progress in understanding and forecasting our inventory this season,
and the work completed by Grower Services and most important of all, our growers, prior to harvest
has made a real difference to the fruit quality and it’s performance throughout the post-harvest
process.
Spring Field Day
This Field Day, presented by the Apata Grower Services Team and Mike Muller, will be focussing on
Gold – pollination, flower numbers and canopy management.
Date: Wednesday 23 September, 9:30 am
Venue: Whenuakite Orchard (Paul and Paula O’Brien), 38 Morton Rd, Aongatete
Technical Advice: Wade Hunkin
On Orchard after a warm August we have seen an excellent gold budbreak but in many cases there have been large
numbers of shoots appearing from basal buds that will require attention – be sure to clean these up soon as the resulting
vegetative growth will become an issue as the spring progresses.
Scale control
This year the ZESPRI Crop Protection Programme permits only two applications of insecticide for the control of scale during
the preblossom period. (Last year a third was allowed if the blocks had a demonstrated issue at harvest or in the leadup).
A study carried out by HortResearch for the industry has highlighted the differing modes of action of the products that we
have available and demonstrated how we might usefully exploit these modes. Some products such as Oil and Lorsban must
come into contact the scale while the newer products Calypso, Actara and Movento have a predominantly systemic action so
require application to leaves and ingestion by scale through the sap flow.
So our preblossom conventional choices have been simplified:
Apply Oil and/or Lorsban when the largest shoots are about 10cm targeting the leader. At this stage access to the
leader remains good and the risk of oil damaging emerging buds is minimal. The use of Masotti type nozzles or a handgun
are recommended.
Apply Calypso or Movento 7-14 days prior to flowering targeting the canopy. Movento has demonstrated excellent
control of scale compared with the most common alternatives.
Postblossom apply at least one preferably two (in the case of green) application of oil post-flowering. Organic growers
should make two applications of oils at similar timing to the conventional programme above.
Frost damage
The recent round of frosts has been surprisingly severe and appears to have caught a number of gold growers out and with
an earlier budbreak this year in green orchards damage has been observed there as well.
If your orchard has suffered extensively there needs to be some careful thought given to the next step. Contact your Apata
Grower Services Representative for advice, or alternatively check out the KiwiTech bulletin at ZESPRI’s website:
