Dave Goodwin
Managing Director
Our 2012 kiwifruit harvest began in late March
and we have worked our way through various
protocols including first-past-the-post, supply caps and
allocated volumes, to emerge six weeks later at the
beginning of MainPack in very good shape.
As a supply group we are ahead of our market
share for Green and Gold submitted in Period 1, but
behind for Green Organic through delayed orchard
maturities in our catchment area.
It is always good to have early runs on the board
at the start of the season and I am pleased to report
that we have packed over one third of our seasonal
volume in Period 1.
The following table illustrates the progress for each
product category:
% completed in Period 1
Green 32%
Gold 78%
Green Organic 8%
Gold Organic 69%
G3 - GA 84%
G9 - GL 0%
G14 - HE 79%
Loadouts have been steady with nearly all KiwiStart
pallets either loaded out or covered by load out
orders. In addition to our allocation of orders we are
continuing to pick up additional orders from WOCA,
which is again more runs on the board.
May 2012
What’s inside
Fruit quality has been good with season-todate
Class 1 pack outs of Green 89%, Gold 81%
and Green Organic 86%. Packed pallets have
been clearing audits both within the packhouse
and at wharf ECPI with few further actions.
The combination of good quality kiwifruit
from growers, good systems and good staff
is delivering quality product to ZESPRI. As we
head into the four weeks of MainPack I am very
conscious of my undertaking to growers to deliver
top quartile inventory performance in 2012. We
are currently on target to deliver on this promise.
Good picking
Since last winter, apart from our usual monitoring
and Board responsibilities, the Entity Directors have
been fully involved, in conjunction with the Apata
Directors and Management, in the external review
conducted after the fruit loss situation which
culminated last season.
The Entity Board has been fully informed of
developments and is satisfied that the necessary
steps and controls have been put in place to once
again see Apata packed fruit perform well against
the industry as we have done in the past. An audit
committee made up of Entity Directors and Apata
Board Directors along with Graeme Munro, who
wrote the external review, are regularly monitoring
the key points that were identified are being
adhered to.
It is pleasing to advise that to-date there have
been no major concerns reported. As we move
into main pack it is critical that all parts of the chain
move in a controlled manner, and that is back to
the Growers picking in an orderly way, so that the
curing, packing and cooling of the fruit is controlled
throughout to achieve the result we all want.
Recently the Entity Board reluctantly accepted the
resignation of Kelvin Reynolds who had been a
valued Director for several years. We wish Kelvin
well. The Entity Board has appointed Dave Farr, who
was the unsuccessful candidate at our last Entity
Board elections, as a Director to fill the vacancy
created with Kelvin’s resignation, until the next Entity
AGM which will be in September 2012.
Damian Young
Kiwifruit Grower
Services Manager
as we move past period 1, and the hectic weeks of
supply caps and first past the post are at an end, it is
timely to consider taste and the current industry structure
to reward good tasting fruit and the main difference for
2012 is that there is no MDP (Market delivery payment)
for fruit delivered in to premium markets. These changes
will make the TZG payment the sole payment for taste to
take into consideration when making harvest decisions.
As your fruit increases in dry matter, a measure is taken
at maturity clearance time which generates a level of
income for that fruit. The following example shows how dry
matter is used in the calculation for your taste payment.
What we know from this formula is that for each point
of TZG that is gained there is a corresponding increase
in income for that fruit.
EXAMPLE:
Green – For each point of TZG accumulated there is an
increase in payment of 2.0 cents per tray i.e. 0.54 TZG=
$1.08
Gold – 4.8 cents each point of TZG
Organic - 3.61 cents each point TZG
Green 14 – 4.88 cents each point of TZG
Gold 9 and Gold 3 – 5.70 cents each point of TZG
As you can see taste is one component in harvest
decision making. Others factors which will quickly come
into play in the following weeks which will need your
consideration are:
• Fruit Size • Frost prone areas
• Weather • Volume to harvest on your orchards
• Picking availability • Long Storage
• Brix levels • Historical orchard taste results
Apata have a strong focus on understanding all these
factors and your Growers Services Representative is
skilled and ready to help inform your harvest decision
making.
We look forward to working closely with you over the
next five weeks of harvest.
Bruce Stowell’s Scholarship - Italy
Campbell Wood recently spent time in Italy on the Bruce
Stowells scholarship. Below is an excerpt from a report
given to the ZESPRI Board from the Italian team.
“Bruce Stowell Scholarship
On April 20th Campbell Wood returned to New Zealand
after he participated in the Bruce Stowell scholarship exchange
in Italy. Campbell has been a great set of extra
hands in the Italian business fitting in well with the Italian
staff and country culture. The exchange continued to
give a great learning experience for a young enthusiastic
person in the Kiwifruit industry and saw an immense
amount of cross pollination of ideas and learning between
Campbell and the Italian team. We are sure that
the understanding Campbell gained of the Italian industry
will be extremely valuable back in the New Zealand
business. The Italian team extends a thank-you to Campbell
for the mature and proactive manner in which he
conducted himself in, and the enduring friendship that
has been created through this opportunity. “
Operational Update
Apata Operations
Manager
As the first fruit of the 2012 mainpack season arrives,
we reflect on the kiwistart period and it has been
a great start to the season. We have managed to
ensure that we have maximized the opportunities
to pack allowing for some excellent returns, and we
have had constant shipping movement which will set
us in great stead for the coming weeks when we can
focus on the quality of the mainpack inventory.
The 2012 season began in Both Coast and Kaimai
sheds in week 12 with the first of the Gold fruit coming
to us from Athenree. This was quickly followed by Hayward
out of the same region. As a supply group we
have achieved well above our share of the industry,
this will allow us to maximize movements in period 2.
The fruit quality has been fantastic, allowing us to run
to full capacity on a daily basis, meeting daily targets
for bins tipped and trays per hour.
Staffing levels are good with less RSE’s employed this
year. Allowing for illness, tiredness and natural attrition
there is a moderate turnover of staff, however HR
are doing a superb job of replenishing staff levels as
required on a daily basis.
Apata Organics
Organic Category Report
it has been a very slow start to the 2012 harvest season
for the Organic category. As predicted by many growers,
the natural maturity of our crops has been slow this season
due to environmental factors and this has been demonstrated
by the difficulty to achieve all three key factors
(black seed, TZG, & Brix) required to qualify for kiwistart.
Despite this slow start, mainpack clearances are
now well underway and we look forward to a constant
flow of fruit into the shed over the next few weeks.
The Pyes Pa site has to date performed very well, we
have maintained a full complement of staff over the
past four week regardless of the minimal shift hours
available. The shed atmosphere is friendly, motivated
and focused on delivering a quality product to the
markets while operating within production targets.
Crops harvested to date appear to be on or just below
estimate art this early stage, fruit size has been averaging
around 35.
PSA Protection Post Harvest
PSA Statistics - 9 May 2012 PSA-V +
Autumn is believed to be a significant infection time for PSA through fruit stalks and leaf scars but the effects are
not seen until spring. Immediately after harvest the recommendation is to apply copper at low rates. When spraying
take care to avoid overspray and ensure that tanks are cleaned to avoid contamination of unpicked areas.
Kocide Opti (50g / 100l), Liquicop (200ml/100l) or Nordox 75WG (25g / 100l) all at 1000l per ha as only the
lower canopy needs to be covered.
Last year the recommendation was to use copper sulphate to assist with leaf fall, however, there are
suggestions that blocks that received this treatment were more likely to show infection in early spring. If
you are intending to speed leaf drop to enable pruning to get underway, wait until natural leaf fall has
commenced and minimise the area treated this way. After leaf fall apply copper at winter rates.
Actiguard is available post harvest, however, there is little data regarding its use at this time. Since the
product is an elicitor its efficacy relies on the vine producing the antibacterial compounds and that behaviour
could be quite different now with lower temperatures and light levels compared with summer.
Winter Field days
We will be holding several winter field days during the week of the 11-15 June.
As well as brief reminders around winter cane selection the main focus will be on converting to G3 or G14.
We will look at grafting techniques and hope to give some hands on opportunities.
We will also review PSA protection and orchard hygiene practices to adopt through winter pruning.
Watch out for venues and times will be closer to the day.
The grafting window is fast approaching and throughout harvest we need to keep our thoughts on the plan
for orchard and how best to ensure that the orchard is a viable business.
One of the decisions to make is the choice to commit to the grafting of a New Cultivar. For some it will be
a easy, maybe the only, decision and for others you may want to take the first steps in converting your
Hayward orchard to a more profitable variety.
Psa will have a major impact on the decision that some growers will be making and from first hand
experience I think that all Hort16a growers need a risk mitigation plan and a succession plan for conversion
of their Hort16a to one of the new cultivars. This plan may involve notch grafting (excluding Te Puke) and
may be programmed for over a couple of years.
Again ZESPRI have done a great job in providing a resource that is invaluable to a grower that decides to
graft to a new variety in the NEW VARIETY INFORMATION GUIDE. There are 3 guides available GREEN, GOLD
and ROOTSTOCK. Please ensure that you read these carefully. They give you all the information to make an
informed decision.
