The grafting window is fast approaching and throughout harvest we need to keep our thoughts on the plan
for orchard and how best to ensure that the orchard is a viable business.
One of the decisions to make is the choice to commit to the grafting of a New Cultivar. For some it will be
a easy, maybe the only, decision and for others you may want to take the first steps in converting your
Hayward orchard to a more profitable variety.
Psa will have a major impact on the decision that some growers will be making and from first hand
experience I think that all Hort16a growers need a risk mitigation plan and a succession plan for conversion
of their Hort16a to one of the new cultivars. This plan may involve notch grafting (excluding Te Puke) and
may be programmed for over a couple of years.
Again ZESPRI have done a great job in providing a resource that is invaluable to a grower that decides to
graft to a new variety in the NEW VARIETY INFORMATION GUIDE. There are 3 guides available GREEN, GOLD
and ROOTSTOCK. Please ensure that you read these carefully. They give you all the information to make an
informed decision.
Apata have a strong focus New Varieties. Your Growers Services Representative is skilled and ready to help
inform your grafting decision making.
