2010 COOLSTORE RESULTS: STEVE LOW, Chief Executive
DECEMBER 2010
I’m now two months into my new role as CEO and it’s been great catching up with growers at our recent functions. I’ve really
appreciated the feedback you’ve given me, and I’m looking forward to having more opportunities to catch up with you in the
2011 season.
On behalf of the Board and Apata team, I wish you and your families a safe and well deserved holiday break.
Apata’s 2010 kiwifruit programme finished with final loadouts happening at the end of week 47 (week ending 28 November
2010). We have achieved excellent results in the Green Organic and Gold categories, but a difficult finish managing the
Green inventory has meant a disappointing decrease in the Green conventional OGR forecast.
As at Week 48 (exclusive of NSS):
Apata Suppliers Fruit Loss Industry Fruit Loss
GREEN 5.60% 4.26%
GREEN OB 1.27% 3.01%
GOLD 2.72% 2.30%
All Organic Green fruit has now been shipped and we are delighted with a final fruit loss result of 1.27% vs industry at 3.01%.
Considering the Apata Organic pool is 43% of the total industry organic Green crop, this reflects the tremendous effort and
results in particular from the team at our Pyes Pa site.
The Green category experienced significant losses on fruit lines that had sooty mould and water stain present, and the
drought conditions over the 2009/10 Summer also had a significant effect on fruit maturity and dry matter, and long-term
storage qualities.
All attempts were made to ship binstore fruit immediately after packing, however not all sizes were ordered immediately and
some additional re-work was required which resulted in higher than usual losses.
This is a disappointing result for the Apata Green pool after a very good start to the programme, however it is this reason
that Apata has an 85/15 pool split to provide insurance to growers during these difficult storage seasons. The result is also
compounded by ZESPRI’s October announcement of a 27 cent decrease in fruit value.
To ensure we give you as supplying growers confidence in our inventory management processes for 2011 and beyond,
the Apata operations team is undertaking a complete ‘Best Practise’ review which will ensure
we get back to delivering the sort of result in fruit loss, storage incentives and net OGR
we can pride ourselves on.
From the entire team at Apata,
we wish you a very Merry
Christmas and Happy New Years!
See you 2011!

PSA UPDATE: BEVAN BAYNE, GM Grower Services
At the time of writing four Apata orchards have been identified as having Psa but the impact even on those orchards is quite
limited to date, having not passed beyond the leaf spotting stage in small parts of the orchard. One is an extremely isolated
orchard with artificial pollen being the only conceivable vector.
While monitoring (see below) is best a grower activity, Apata does have teams available to assist with a specific monitoring
round. In addition the KwiGreen teams will be briefed to look for symptoms but on its own this monitoring is not frequent enough
and timing is outside the period considered a real danger.
Talk to your Apata Grower Services Representative if you require some assistance.
Orchard Hygiene
All orchards, whether confirmed to host Psa or not, need to be treated the same from a hygiene perspective. Good practice will
help to limit the spread from vine to vine or orchard to orchard.
PSA spreads by wind and transfer of plant material. Direct transfer from humans and machinery is considered low risk.
Some sensible practices are:
• Avoid orchard work in wet or damp conditions.
• Supply your own set of tools for pruning or girdling to your contractor that remain on orchard. Sterilise at the end of each
day.
• Park vehicles away from the canopy.
• Ensure tractors and vehicles that have been under vines are clean before entering and washed down using high volume
low pressure water on finishing. Identifying a permanent washdown area with drainage and hose is a good idea.
• Workers and visitors should ensure they are clear of plant debris before entering or leaving and footwear is cleaned.
Orchard monitoring
Check the Kiwifruit Vine Health Inc guide.
APATA SITES TO CLOSE FOR HOLIDAYS
From Monday 20 December to Friday 7 January all Apata sites will be closed for the holiday break.
If growers urgently need to contact an Apata Grower Services Representative, please call the following:
Pre-Xmas: Damian Young, 027 500 8586
Post-New Years: Wade Hunkin, 027 481 9905
Monitoring is a key activitiy in controlling the spread of Psa. Be familiar with the symptoms of Psa and be prepared to act.
Where no symptoms have been identified monitor at least fortnightly by walking at least every third row scanning for signs of
Psa. Walk different rows each monitoring round.
If you see signs of leafspotting tag and record the symptoms - photos are a useful record.
Remember that ZESPRI want to receive details of even clear rounds. Use the forms available from The Canopy website, and
we understand ZESPRI are working to develop a more streamlined system on The Canopy.
If you see secondary symptoms – Act! Make sure you follow the guide.
Remember to contact your Apata Grower Services Representative if you have any questions.
All the best for the Christmas season, and thank you for your support - Best Regards, Bevan.

ORCHARD OBSERVATIONS: WADE HUNKIN, Apata Technical Services Manager
With pollination over the bees are on their way back to wherever bees come from! Generally the weather was kind but
we have seen some evidence of bacterial blossom blight, probably as a result of some cooler damp nights during later
November.
It’s time now to ask how pollination went and how the males performed with respect to flower numbers, overlap and
attractiveness to bees? In the recent past we may have applied pollen artificially but post-Psa this may not be such an
attractive option, only time will tell.
In the meantime if the males performed poorly this next period is the time to start to address the issues so come next
pollination season the sample problems do not reoccur. They need to be open getting plenty of light and full of short spur
growth.
Prune now to 6-8 short branches each side keeping to a narrow area even in opposing female setups. Thin the canes rather
than reduce their length as shortening a vigorous cane results in regrowth occurring higher in the canopy. Maintain through
summer with minor trims button cutting the vigorous non terminated shoots that develop first and threaten to overtake the
whole canopy. Watch the overall male area – 10% of the canopy is plenty.
Later in the season continue to button stub the strong non-terminated canes that develop. The second and third rounds are
as important as the first.
The overall objective is that males should not need pruning in the winter, however, the late growth canes that were missed in
the autumn should still be removed then. They contribute little in the way of flowers and will only shade during pollination.
Fruit numbers
Quite quickly you will be able to get a handle on fruit quality and numbers. The sooner the obvious rejects are remove the
greater will be the impact of removing them. Remember too that right now 45 fruit per square meter translates to 9,000 trays
per ha so if you have high numbers you may need to act. Experience will tell you what is a sustainable crop load for your
orchard but target to get that first thin done by the end of the year to make an impact.
Use a square meter of pipe or tape to calibrate your eye and look for the especially crowded areas to start.
Sooty mould and Passion vine hopper
The recent meetings have presented some options. The best approach would appear to be eliminate any host plants within
the orchard and monitor the boundaries for nymph activity. There is a guide on The Canopy website to how to do this. There
are warnings around the bee safety of the various control options, so take care if bees are active. Just because you don’t
have hives present in the orchard does not mean bees are far away. As another option growers have reported 2% oil has an
impact on nymphs on plants outside the orchard blocks.

Chemical Warning Detail
Calypso No bee safety messages on the label Don’t spray while bees are flying
Pyrethrum Very toxic to bees Must not contact plants in flower while bees are present
Vertikil Non-toxic to bees Don’t spray while bees are flying
Applaud Non-toxic to bees Don’t spray while bees are flying
Talstar Toxic to bees Don’t apply to kiwifruit flowers except in morning or evening
when bees are not foraging. Spray must not contact other
plants likely to be visited by bees
Actara Very toxic to terrestrial invertebrates Spray must NOT contact plants in flower if bees are actively
foraging. Do NOT apply if in open flower or part bloom, or if it
is likely to flower within 4 days of application.
Attack Toxic to bees Spray must not contact plants in flower if they are likely to be
visited by bees
Crop protection - Green
Even if you used Movento pre-flowering a post-flowering, oil should be part of your programme preferably apply an oil on in
the initial post flowering period but the second window before monitoring commences is a backup if the weather is not suitable.
Remember that if you include a leafroller control in with the second oil you will need a pest monitoring result to support it.
KiwiGreen monitoring
The first Gold orchards will be checked for leafroller before Christmas but the real start will be immediately in the New Year.
NEW VARIETIES: DAMIAN YOUNG, Kiwifruit Grower Services Manager
ZESPRI are currently working on the key dates for next year’s new varieties tender process.
The dates are expected to be similar to that of 2010, with key information and hectares
released around June.
Following on from its highly successful first year, the Apata New Varieties programme will
continue organising hub groups and technical support Field Days for growers taking part in
the NV programme.
Our Grower Services team are available to come to your orchard to offer advice on your
NV plan. We have cost models we can discuss with you that detail potential cash flow and
expected grafting costs. If you require any help with your 2011 application, contact your
Apata Grower Services Representative.
The following information is taken from The National Bank’s presentation to Apata New
Variety growers. It offers some advice when considering investing in New Varieties.
Why growers have considered investing in New Varieties?
- economic reasons: perceived better returns
- spread the risk
- everyone else is keen so it must be good
- don’t want to miss an opportunity
- new challenge
Considerations
- physical: - suitability of the site, aspect, contour, altitude
- early start/main pack?
- frost risk, shelter, structures, irrigation etc
- financial: - ability to forego cashflow for 1+ years (or more)
- risk of variety failure
- options/fallbacks
- what return is required by you for the risk involved
- people: - current physical management ability
- financial management
- experience with conversion to Hort16A?
- require input from consultants or Apata staff?
- realistic goals and objectives - are you looking for the silver bullet?
Apata New Variety Programme Update
Due to the Psa situation in our industry, orchard visits and activities have been minimised to help stop the spread of Psa.
To help ensure our New Variety growers are kept up to speed with the latest on-orchard guides and information, we are
publishing as much information as possible for you to use as guidance on your orchard.
We hope to get back into our New Variety Field Day programme in the New Year once the Psa situation and ongoing management
becomes more clearer.
Remember you can contact your Apata Grower Services Representative at any time to discuss any questions you may have.
Bringing Down Leaders
The experience of those who have been involved in the precommercial trials is that getting the new leaders down early is an
important step in obtaining a maximum fruiting canopy for next season. Basically the earlier better, growers of G14 reported
difficulties in developing secondary laterals if leaders were dropped after the beginning of December. For G3 and G9 they need
to be down by the longest day.

Are you receiving our KiwiLink email bulletins?
KIWILINK EMAIL BULLETINS
It’s not necessary to bring all the
leaders down at the same time.
Just start with the ones that are long
enough to cover the bay.
Leave the shorter / weaker leaders
for now but monitor their progress.
In mid-late December a thick short
leader can be dropped down and a
secondary shoot used to extend the
leader later but if they are still thin
and short just leave them up and
drop them in the winter. The example
here was weak last summer and left
up on the string over winter and is
growing strongly now.
Wrap the new leader around the wire
just enough to support it through the
next phase. Once around for each
1.5m of leader wire. Males can
be left up the string in full light or
dropped to promote lateral growth.
Either approach seems to work.
General reminders
• Keep up the fertiliser – 250g
per plant of Nitrophoska Blue or
equivalent.
• Irrigate if you have it.
• Weed
important.
control remains
• Keep any sucker growth under
control. No more than graft
height. Crush the tips of growth
or cut off the strong ones. The
other option is to remove once
the leaders are established.
• Tighten strings and review
lateral spacings.
As the Psa situation is changing rapidly, we are communicating the latest information via our email
bulletins to ensure growers receive the updates as soon as possible.
If you would like to receive our email bulletins please contact Cass Thurston on 07 552 0535 or
email cassandra.thurston@apata.co.nz with your name and email address. Alternatively contact
