reviewed and updated annually.<br />

2.6 The implementation of Biosafety Level 3/<strong>polio</strong> status in the production and testing<br />

facilities should be verified through an independent assessment. Current national<br />

requirements concerning verification mechanisms should be complied with.<br />

3. PERSONNEL<br />

3.1 The manufacturing establishment and its personnel shall be under the authority of a<br />

qualified person who has been trained in the techniques used in manufacturing<br />

biological substances and who possesses the scientific knowledge upon which the<br />

manufacture of these products is based.<br />

3.2 Personnel required to work in the <strong>polio</strong> virus <strong>containment</strong> area(s) should be selected<br />

with care to ensure that they may be relied upon to observe the appropriate codes of<br />

practice and are not subject to any disease or condition that could compromise the<br />

integrity of the product or the safe <strong>containment</strong> of the <strong>polio</strong>virus strains with which<br />

they work. The acceptance by staff that the adequate <strong>containment</strong> of <strong>polio</strong>virus is an<br />

individual responsibility is a key factor in its implementation and maintenance.<br />

3.3 <strong>Health</strong> examinations of personnel should be required before employment and<br />

periodically (at least annually) thereafter. Any changes in health status that could<br />
