<strong>The</strong> Greene Family.<br />

married, in Providence, February 27, 1782, Thomas Hughes, bom May 30,<br />

1752, only son <strong>of</strong> Joseph and Mary Hughes. Thomas Hughes was 2d Lieu-<br />

tenant, nth Continental Infantry, January i to December 31, 1776; ist<br />

Lieutenant 2d <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Regiment (Colonel Israel Angell's), January i,<br />

1777; Captain, June 23, 1777; transferred to ist <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong>, June i,<br />

1 78 1, and served to the close <strong>of</strong> the Revolution <strong>with</strong> the rank <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />

(see Heitman's Official Register <strong>of</strong> Officers <strong>of</strong> the Continental Army). He<br />

served throughout the War <strong>of</strong> 181 2 <strong>with</strong> the rank <strong>of</strong> Major. <strong>The</strong> place <strong>of</strong><br />

his birth is not recorded, but family tradition states that the family was <strong>of</strong><br />

Scotch-Irish descent. In the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Colonial Records (vol. x., pp.<br />

412 and 413) he is mentioned as <strong>of</strong> Freetown, Mass., and he may have been<br />

bom there. He died December 10, 182 1, at his home in Centreville, and<br />

was btiried in the family burying ground <strong>of</strong> his brother-in-law. Colonel Job<br />

Greene, on the adjoining farm. Major Hughes was one <strong>of</strong> the original mem-<br />

bers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> the Cincinnati. He was a small, wiry,<br />

energetic man, <strong>of</strong> refined tastes and fond <strong>of</strong> reading, <strong>with</strong> reddish hair and<br />

blue eyes, and was a very efficient <strong>of</strong>ficer.<br />

Some time after his death, his widow removed to North Scituate, R. I.,<br />

<strong>with</strong> her unmarried daughter and several orjDhan granddaughters. She<br />

died there August 8, 1844, and was buried beside her husband at Centre-<br />

ville. She was the eldest child <strong>of</strong> Colonel Christopher Greene, the distin-<br />

guished Revolutionary hero.<br />

In 1896 the Greene family burying ground at "Beaver Dam," Centre-<br />

ville, R. I., was abandoned, and the remains <strong>of</strong> Major Hughes, his wife<br />

Welthian, and their maiden daughter, Sally, were removed to Greenwood<br />

Cemetery, Phenix, R. I. A marker <strong>of</strong> the Sons <strong>of</strong> the American Revolution<br />

has been placed by the <strong>Rhode</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Society at Major Hughes's grave.<br />

<strong>The</strong> few surviving descendants <strong>of</strong> Major and Mrs. Thomas Hughes are the<br />

widow and daughter <strong>of</strong> John Waterman Abom Greene, living in Providence,<br />

and the son and daughter and one granddaughter <strong>of</strong> William Greene, son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jeremiah and Phebe (Hughes) Greene.<br />

Mrs. John W. A. Greene <strong>of</strong> Providence has in her possession the Hughes<br />

family Bible, <strong>with</strong> the family <strong>records</strong> and a few relics. This account, based<br />

upon the <strong>records</strong> from the Hughes family Bible, is kindly contributed by<br />

Miss M. A. Greene <strong>of</strong> Providence.<br />

1410. Mary Hughes, born January 4, 1783, died June 9, 1818; married, about<br />

1799, Burrows Aboni <strong>of</strong> Providence. <strong>The</strong>ir children were: Gasherie<br />

Brasher, bom May 3, 1800, died June 17, 1806; Mary Helen, bom August<br />

12, 1802, died June 17, 1804; Henry Alexander, born August 12, 1804, died
