<strong>The</strong> <strong>Greenes</strong> <strong>of</strong> Northaniptonsliirc.<br />

and co-heiress <strong>of</strong> George Canteloupe, Baron <strong>of</strong> Abergavenny in Wales;<br />

and (2) Christian, daughter <strong>of</strong> Irwardby. <strong>The</strong> son by second wife,<br />

Sir Nicholas, m. Joan, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Bruce. <strong>The</strong>y had two daughters,<br />

Joan, wife <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Culpeper; and Elizabeth, wife <strong>of</strong> Sir John<br />

Holland.<br />

Lucy la Zouche, first wife <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas <strong>of</strong> Boketon, was granddaughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Alan, Lord Zouche <strong>of</strong> Ashby, Governor <strong>of</strong> Northampton Castle, whose<br />

wife was granddaughter <strong>of</strong> Saier de Quincy, Earl <strong>of</strong> Winchester, one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

twenty-five Magna Charta Barons and a Knight <strong>of</strong> the Fifth Crusade in the<br />

Holy Land, 1220. Lucy la Zouche was also descended from Hengest, King<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Saxons, and Hugh Capet, founder <strong>of</strong> the Capetian dynasty in France.<br />

Sir Henry Grene " de Boketon," son <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas and Lucy (Zouche)<br />

de Boketon, was Sergeant-at-Law, 1345, Justice <strong>of</strong> the King's Bench, 1354,<br />

Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> England, 24th May, 1361.<br />

He had the grant <strong>of</strong> " Boketon Fair " in 1351 and purchased the Manor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Norton in 1353, which, <strong>with</strong> the village, has since been called Greene's<br />

Norton. He died 1369 and was buried at Boketon, where the ruins <strong>of</strong> the<br />

old church still remain. " Sir Henry Grene for his great wisdom and knowledge<br />

was advanced to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Lord Chief Justice <strong>of</strong> England and <strong>with</strong><br />

his large possessions in Northamptonshire and other counties left his pos-<br />

terity one <strong>of</strong> the most considerable estates <strong>of</strong> that age ' (Baker)<br />

In 1358, Sir Henry Grene, then Justice <strong>of</strong> Common Pleas, having been<br />

cited before the Pope for pronouncing judgment against the Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

Ely for harboring one <strong>of</strong> his men who had burnt the Mansion House <strong>of</strong><br />

Lady Wake and slain one <strong>of</strong> the servants, was excommunicated for non-<br />

appearance, but it did not prevent his being raised to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Chief<br />

Justice <strong>of</strong> the King's Bench on 24th May, 1361. He opened Parliament<br />

in the following two years and was present in the next. He was succeeded<br />

by John Knyvet, 29th October, 1365. <strong>The</strong> warrant for the delivery <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Rolls, etc., calls him ''delectus et fidelis" (Foss), showing that he was dismissed<br />

<strong>with</strong> honor. In all his extant deeds he styles himself " de Buckton."<br />

He added greatly to his patrimonial estates and, dying in 43d<br />

Edward III. (1370), left his vast extent <strong>of</strong> property to his eldest son, Sir<br />

Thomas, and his second son. Sir Henry Grene. He married Catharine de<br />

Drayton <strong>of</strong> the noted de Vere family, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John and sister <strong>of</strong><br />

Sir Simon Drayton.'<br />

<strong>The</strong>y had issue:<br />

I Sir John Drayton was eighth in male hne <strong>of</strong> descent from Aubrey de Vere, who came in <strong>with</strong><br />
