About Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher
Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the
stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose
state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis
on liberal arts and career education.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the
United States, and excellence, ranging from its seven NCAA championships to its
international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found
throughout the faculty and staff.
About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout
Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships
that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 150 student
organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation
center.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves
students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes,
credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.
The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of
about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of
campus, and includes many retail stores and restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in
September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11
and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton,
Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from
Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh
and Washington, DC.
Men’s 2002-03 Preview / Profiles
After a strong finish to the 2001-02
season, the Bloomsburg University men’s
tennis team is looking forward to bigger and
better things this year.
The Huskies return all seven of its starters
from last year giving them its most
experienced lineup in several years. Head
coach Marty Coyne will be looking for his
veterans to return the Huskies to the top of
the PSAC as well as earning another trip to
the NCAA championships.
“We will have a lineup that has plenty of
experience top to bottom,” said Coyne.
“Our top player, Kris Shumway, is a senior
and was ranked number two in the East in
singles play last year, while Aleks Kalezic, a
junior, is now free of injuries that plagued
him last season.”
Shumway, the Huskies MVP for second
straight year, was All-PSAC first team for the
second straight year after posting a record
of 15-9 playing number one singles. In
doubles, he teamed with three partners to
post a record of 18-9.
Kalezic was second team All-PSAC after
posting a record of 13-7 in singles
competition and 11-8 in doubles play.
“The middle of our lineup is also strong
with sophomores Mike McGrath and Mark
Vellek,” Coyne added. “Now that they have
a year of competition under their belt I
expect them to really make an impact in the
league.”
McGrath, a first team All-PSAC choice
last year, posted 15 wins in singles play and
14 wins in doubles.
PLAYER PROFILES
The Huskies also have a trio of players
who saw quite a bit of playing time last
season. Kurt Caster, Brendan Miller and
Kevin Wenck all made contributions to the
team this season and will battle for playing
time in singles.
Caster was second team All-PSAC last
year and led the team with 20 wins against
nine losses.
Some new blood to the Huskies roster
will also help the team as its fights to regain
hold of the PSAC title. Transfers Brian
Bogus, from Southeast Louisiana, and Alex
Yamploski, from St. Peter’s, will both add
tremendously to the depth of the team.
“Brian is from Texas and was the former
number one ranked junior in doubles, while
Alex has worked with former Bloomsburg
standout Evan Rosen and will be looking to
crack the top six of our lineup,” said Coyne.
A couple of freshmen will also be looking
for playing time this season for the Huskies.
Jason Brooke, from Strath Haven High
School and Justin Herzog, from Emmaus,
will give coach Coyne more flexibility with
his lineup. In January, look for two-time
PIAA State Doubles champion Nick Hjorth,
from Central Bucks East High School, to
give the team as boost in doubles.
“I expect big things from the team this
year,” said Coyne. “With our experience and
with the talent we have coming into the
program this year, I expect this team to be
right near the top of the rankings and allow
us a good shot at returning the PSAC title to
its longtime home here at Bloomsburg.”
2002-03 Roster / Women’s Preview
It has been two years since the
Bloomsburg University women’s tennis
team claimed a PSAC championship. But,
with a strong group of returning players,
the Huskies are primed and ready to
regain the championship trophy they
have claimed seven times previously in
school history.
To accomplish the goal of winning
the PSAC the team will once again need
great play from its top duo of Erin Bartsch
and Beth Fulton. Bartsch is the reigning
PSAC Athlete of the Year in women’s
tennis and compiled 21 wins last season.
Fulton was a solid number two player last
season and earned second team All-PSAC
honors.
“I will be expecting big things from
both Erin and Beth,” said coach Marty
Coyne. “Erin was the top-ranked player in
the East Region last year, while Beth is a
very tough player who should move up
full-time this year to the number two spot
in the lineup.”
Of course you need more than two
players to win a title and the Huskies
have several strong players battling for
time in spots three through six.
Julie Bramante was a pleasant surprise
for the Huskies last year and was listed as
the Player to Watch in the East Region.
Bramante led the Huskies with 22 wins
Miranda Campbell struggled somewhat
last season, but was 5-2 at the number five
spot last season. The Huskies are looking
for her to regain the form that helped
her post 35 wins in her first two seasons.
Julie McCulley also returns for the
Huskies and will be looking for playing
time at number six singles.
“Julie Bramante really made great
strides last year and Miranda has a big
game that I know will help us post us
some wins,” Coyne added. “Julie McCulley
has also developed a better game and
should help us at the bottom of the
lineup.”
Of course all good teams need an
infusion of youth to set the stage for the
future and the Huskies feel they have
some good freshmen ready to contribute.
Lindsey Wychoff had a tremendous
high school career in Ohio and should
crack the top five of the lineup, while
Brande Hanstein and Lauren Colfer both
are products of the Arthur Ashe Tennis
Center in Philadelphia and will add depth
to the team.
“I am pleased with the freshmen we
will have playing for us this year,” said
Coyne. “All three have had good high
school careers and will help us
immediately.”

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
The Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference, with 51 years of organized
competition, has established itself as one
of the most respected NCAA Division II
athletic conferences.
In its history the PSAC has laid claim
to 32 NCAA team champions and 178
individual title winners, giving credence
to its fine athletic tradition. The
conference’s prosperity on the national
level was abundant again in 2001-02, as
88 of the league’s 245 teams participated
in NCAA postseason competition. The
PSAC also distinguishes itself as the
largest conference in terms of sports
sponsorship. With the addition of men’s
and women’s indoor track & field
championships in 2001-02, the PSAC now
awards titles for 22 different sports.
Academic success is paramount for
PSAC member institutions as well. During
the 2001-02 academic year, 1,118
student-athletes were designated by the
conference as “Scholar-Athletes” after
attaining a cumulative grade point
average of 3.25 or better. Additionally,
eight PSAC student-athletes earned
19
Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America
Awards last season.
The PSAC was organized in 1951 for
the purpose of promoting and
administering men’s athletic programs
within the 14 state teachers colleges in
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In
1977, due to the interest and growth of
women’s athletics, the conference was
restructured to provide for women’s
programs.
From its inception, each conference
member selected its own competitive
division within the NCAA. In 1980,
however, the presidents voted to
reclassify the entire conference to
Division II. Although all 14 institutions
are members of NCAA Division II, nine
schools have also elected to compete at
the Division I level in select sports.
In 1983, all member institutions
were granted university status as a result
of Legislative Act 188, which formed
Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher
Education. This system now enrolls over
98,000 students. The alumni of the State
System number more than 570,000,
including 361,000 Pennsylvanians.
