East Side News
Now that the first grading
period is nearly
over, I feel that it’s time
for a few important reminders
at this point in
the school year.
Please reinforce
with your child to continue
exhibiting positive
behavior on the bus, on
school grounds- at
lunch, recess, and so
on, and at school
events. By and large,
our students are always
respectful. It’s important
to encourage them
to keep it up.
In the name of
safety, please continue
to follow our dismissal
policy. If you are picking
up your child in your
car, you need to get a
carpool number and
pick them up on the
west side of the building.
Although the line
looks long, it moves
Brown’s Blog
quickly. It’s a safety
hazard to pick up kids
in our other parking lots
at dismissal; we want to
continue ensuring that
students who walk are
not in danger of cars in
the wrong places, and
that kids who are
picked up are being
met by an adult with a
car rider number.
We are looking forward
to seeing you during
parent-teacher conferences!
We will have
a free chili dinner from
5-6:30 pm if you are
interested. There will
be a sign-up form coming
home in the next
few days. I hear our
chili is delicious! If child
care during conferences
is a concern,
please return the form
your child brought
home about conferences
where you can
sign up to have our after-school
Important Dates to Remember:
gram look after your
child for the fifteen minutes
you are in the
conference. Remember
that Tuesday and
Wednesday are both
early dismissal days at
noon.
Continue to encourage
your children to
share what they are
learning at school with
you. Look at their papers,
help with homework,
read a book together.
Your time truly
makes a difference to
your child!
If you are interested in
helping the East Side
Parent Association by
working a game in our
concession stand,
please let parents Billie
Scrogham or Missy
Monson know. We certainly
could use your
help, and the kids love
seeing you at the
games!
Interview a
Grandparent
It’s that special
time of year when East Side
honors our grandparents. What
a special group of people they
are! Years ago, yes many
years ago, I had a college class
where I needed to interview
someone. I chose to interview
my great-grandpa. I had to
write a paper about the interview,
and I recorded it on tape.
I can still hear his voice as he
would chuckle and answer my
questions.
That interview is packed full
of history. Grandpa told me
about the one room schoolhouse
he attended and how the
teacher handled the discipline
(much different than today). He
told me about the harmless
jokes the guys used to play on
each other. He also told me
about hitching up the horse and
for a date, and about riding the
trolley from Edinburgh to Franklin.
I could picture it all in my
mind as he shared his stories.
While my mother, Mrs.
Barker, was teaching she started
a project where her students
would interview their grandparents,
or an elderly friend. I’m
sure some of you remember the
Then and Now series. Interviewing
is not just for reporters. It is a
great way to gather information
and to learn. Recording that information
saves it for generations
to come.
Think about all of the skills
involved with the interviewing
process. You come up with the
questions you are going to ask.
You sharpen your listening skills
as the person you are interviewing
responses to your questions.
Sometimes the answers lead to
other questions, and you seek
more details. Then you take the
the name of the enchantress who imprisoned Rapunzel in the tower?
East Side News
In a phone interview, Mrs.
Rooks, 5th grade girls basketball
coach, said the team
did a great job for their first
game. She said they are
looking forward to a successful
season; and are excited
about their next game,
a home game October 8th,
against St. Bartholomew at
5:00. Hope to see you
there!
information and write it down in an
order that flows well when read.
The finished product is something
you can read time and time again
as you reflect on what you have
learned. The whole process is an
extremely rewarding experience.
So, round-up a grandparent and
spend some time getting to know
them through interviewing. I think
you will be glad you did!
Answer to 9-24-07 Fairy Tale Quiz Question:
In one Brothers Grimm story, four
animals — a donkey, a dog, a cat and a
rooster — learn that they have outlived
their usefulness to their owners, and are
to be killed. Rather than meekly accepting
their fate, they set off together to
start a new life as: A. Musicians

Mrs. J. Garrett, 3rd grade
teacher at East Side Elementary,
was a surprised recipient on October
2nd in an exciting visit to
her classroom by Office Max
representatives. She was nominated
because of her outstanding
commitment to helping
each child achieve his/her potential.
She makes learning exciting,
and truly leaves no child left
behind!
Office Max brought some really
great items: a plaque and flowers,
a new leather teacher's
Over 300 Grandparents (some Great Grandparents!)
enjoyed time with their ‘Grands’ at East Side.
At 1:00, over 200 grandparents
started to arrive to see their
grandchildren in action in their
classrooms at East Side. Fifteen
5th graders welcomed them at
the front door, gave them a gift
from Not Just Popcorn, and escorted
them to their grandchild's
room The grandparents walked
away impressed with the amount
of things their grandchild did dur-
ing the day. One grandparent
said, “It was great getting to see
where they come to learn. It was
fun seeing their excitement over
sharing their school with us.”
In the evening, over 100
grandparents and grandchildren
came to share a book together,
write a book review, have a
snack and do an interview to
learn more about each other.
chair, a metal rolling cart, a digital
camera, a printer, photo paper,
electric pencil sharpener,
electric crayon sharpener, sticky
notes, scissors, erasers, markers,
and much more. They also
brought goodie bags for each
student with pencils, pens, and
erasers. It was so neat, and a
wonderful and well-deserved
treat for Mrs.
Garrett!
The grandparents were also give
a gift bag from Not Just Popcorn.
