1. The Toronto Street Retreat that we took students on last week and about our upcoming Kingston Street
Retreat on December 18th. Twelve students and the two Chaplaincy Leaders from Holy Cross and
Regiopolis-Notre Dame spent November 12 th -13 th in Toronto working with the homeless and learning what
life is like for people who live on the streets of our biggest city. For most of the group, this was their first
opportunity to actually meet and speak with a homeless person, with a former street prostitute and with
the countless men and women who live and die on the streets without the comforts of a family or a
home.See a photographic essay at http://hcss.alcdsb.on.ca/hctoday/
2. The 2012 Advent Campaign which will collect money to buy Winter Survival Kits for homeless youth in
Kingston as well as for the 2013 Jamaica House build.

3. Grade Level Reconciliation-Library All Day; On Thursday 6 th December students and staff will have an opportunity
to celebrate Reconciliation in the Library. The Advent Penitential Celebrations are organized by grade level throughout
the day. Students who have finished Reconciliation or who do not intend to visit a Priest will be allowed to leave the
Library when their teacher is ready to take them back to the classroom.
A quiet atmosphere and time for prayer will be maintained in the Library during Confessions. Teachers will bring their
students to the Library immediately after the beginning of class or when they are called down and to stay with them in
the Library. Students will be encouraged to pray quietly, to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to reflect
on forgiveness and reconciliation through a slide presentation.
In-class information regarding reconciliation will be distributed by Chris Forster in advance of December 6th. If you
or your students have any questions about the materials please contact Chris at X3436 or forster@alcdsb.on.ca
4. K2K 2013 Mission Trip “Jamaica Fish Fry” Friday 2 nd November at Holy Cross 3:30 to 7:00; Holy Cross
A. For Discussion
1) Crusader Athletics Fund Raiser scheduled fir Friday 9 th November at Holy Cross 7:30 to 1:00; The
fundraiser in support of athletics scheduled for Friday,
November 9 th was cancelled. Earlier in that week an
announcement was made that the dance had been cancelled
due to a low ticket sales. A syner-voice message was
broadcasted to all the homes in our Holy Cross community on November 9 th to ensure that all members of our
community were aware that the dance was cancelled. Refunds were given back to all the fall coaches to return the
funds to their student athletes.

2) School Improvement Plan,(SIPSA);The focus for the November 23 rd PD Day is Closing the Gap PD Day. The
term learning gap is often used to refer to the gap between a student’s actual achievement and his or her
potential for achievement. Research confirms that gaps in student achievement can be narrowed and overall
improvement in achievement attained if:
1. the responsibility for making these changes is shared by all partners in the education system-students,
parents, educators and community partners
2. there has been a sustained and deliberate focus on individual student’s strengths and needs, assessment
for learning, and precision in instruction through evidence-informed interventions
Only by helping every student reach his or her potential can we hope to close the achievement gap between
groups of students.
•How do we as a school team work to close the learning gap for all students?
•How do these school strategies align with BIPSA and the four core instructional strategies: relevant and
engaging tasks, accountable talk, shared/ guided practice and precise, timely, descriptive feedback, in
support of engaging students in robust thinking?
School Improvement Planning Time (in departments)
School Improvement Plan School Effectiveness Framework Indicators -
Collaborative Inquiries Four Core Instructional Strategies
Collaborative Inquiries
• Address student needs in Applied, Open and Locally Developed courses in the areas of Numeracy or Literacy
• Use Student Work and other sources of data identified through the Collaborative Inquiry process as focus
for evidence
• Be based on the Professional Learning Cycle ( planning, acting, observing, and reflecting)
• Address one of the Core Instructional Strategies identified in Board Improvement Plan
• Include Differentiated Instruction
• Involve reflecting on artifacts of student learning, and describing strategies for assessment and evaluation
* Note that results of collaborative inquiries will be shared within and among schools
Intermediate CIL-M Grade 7-9 Teachers November 1, 2012
Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School Collaborative Inquiry Question and Statement
Question and Statement:
What is the impact of Precise and timely descriptive feedback on student learning and student ownership of
their learning?
If precise, timely and descriptive feedback for assessment “as” learning, becomes a part of our
teaching/learning process,
Then students will be more aware of their own learning, will begin to reflect on their learning, to take the next
suggested steps and to improve personal achievement.
Garden in the afternoon. The lunch period will begin slightly earlier than regularly scheduled to allow the crew
2. Movember at Holy Cross; For breast cancer awareness, people wear pink ribbons ... the idea behind Movember is that are
encouraged to grow moustaches to help raise awareness for prostate cancer; these moustaches act as their ribbons.
To involve women, light blue ribbons can be worn, as well as sponsoring a ‘mo bro’. Holy Cross is looking to
promote Movember by creating posters and delivering letters to homeroom classes. All are asked to join with Robin
Dzierniejko and students to help promote awareness for issues that affect men and are often not dealt with. Let’s
make Movember 2012 at Holy Cross a huge success with both students and staff participating. The focus is not on
fundraising, but rather in raising awareness about prostate cancer. The ‘Clean Shaven’ photos will be taken on Thursday,
November 1 st , in Room 129, followed by a halfway picture on Thursday, November 15 th , and finally, the official ‘mo’
pictures on Friday, November 30!
A Run for Movember will take place at Holy Cross on Sunday, November 25 at noon! The
registration fee is $25, which includes a Movember t-shirt, and all proceeds going to support
Prostate Cancer Research. To sign up for the race, email Robin Dzierniejko
(dzierobi@alcdsb.on.ca) or jump online to Events Online
(http://www.eventsonline.ca/events/movember ). Let’s all get together to support men’s health
issues!
B. For Discussion
PRO Grant Speaker Tuesday 5th March 2012 the Tuesday before March Break 2013 Lisa L
Please mark your calendars and be thinking about how we can promote this event.

Last year there was a "full house" in the cafeteria with Dr. Mike Condra who spoke on "Teens, Stress and Distress".
Last year, a sub-committee operated primarily via e-mail regarding advertising, promotion (social networking, media &
community), leading up to the actual event, which required set-up (chairs and platform were looked after for us), a
refreshment table was set up and monitered, greeting people and assisting with seating, afterward clean up consisted
of putting chairs away and taking down the refreshment table.
Please consider being on board and bringing your ideas, connections and wisdom to the table. Last year we were able to
have newspaper, CBC and Fly FM radio coverage, and CKWS television did a re-cap after the evening on the local news!
There is great insight and connections on Coincil to spread the word through our church, workplace, and social circles.
You are invited once again be involved in helping shape our upcoming youth by educating us as parents to better support
our children by supporting and helping each other.
