THE GOLDMUND GOLDCUBE
Swiss Made
ATTENTION
No connection or manipulation must be done before reading
those instructions. Damage to the amplifier may result if the
following instructions are not consciously understood and
applied.
UNPACKING
You will find in the GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE packing :
- A pair of the amplifiers,
- This manual,
- Accessories and spare fuses.
Please keep the packaging in case you need to transport the
amplifiers at a later date or if you have to send them for maintenance.
CHOICE OF AMPLIFIER LOCATION AND COOLING
The GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE has been designed to be used in
combination with the GoLDMUND APOLOGUE speaker system,
in the special lodging of its back panel. In this case, the
amplifier is automatically reaching its proper temperature of
f unction for optimized performances.
lf used in a different configuration, do not forget that the GOLD
CUBE, as all the high quality amplifiers. generates a large amount
of heat.
It is mandatory to allow a proper cooling of the body of the GO LD
CUBE which acts as heat sink. Avoid a location which is not
properly vented.
LINE VO LTAGE ADJUSTMENT
The GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE amplifier is internally wired for a
specif ic line voltage.
ATTENTION : A 234V adjusted amplifier will function properly
f or AC line voltage between 2OOV and 245Y . For
a 1 1 7V version, the AC line must deliver between
105 and 125V. lf your AC line is usually out of
these tolerances, please consult your GOLDMUND
dealer.
Please check the value of the main line f use. This f use is located
on the bottom of the amolifier, near a corner.
The golden lid can be removed with a smallscrewdriver or better
with a coin, and then the f use holder.
Use a 3A slow-blow fuse for 22OV and a 5A slow-blow fuse for
1 10V.
4. CONNECTIONS
Connectthe power cord of the amplifier in the nearest wall plug.
Use only a 3 lugs grounded plug, for safety reasons. To get the
best sound of the amplif ier, avoid any multiple plug or extension
cord.
Connect the interconnect between the preamp and the power
amp. The RCA female socket is the highest quality WBT socket
(ground connectsfirst and the plug may be locked if you use the
GOLDMUND-M lT interconnect).
lf the GOLD CUBE is used with an APOLOGUE, use the provided
bi-male iunctions to plug it inside the special lodging in the
speaker back. The proper position of the cube is when the power
cord and the power switch are visible on the bottom angle of the
cube from the outside.
Otherwise, connectthe speaker cables tothe two banana receptacle
located on the opposite face from the input. The " + " is
marked with a red dot.
The amplifier is non-inverting in phase.
AMPLIFIERS CONTROLS
On the front plate of the GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE are only
accessible:
The power key, used to power the amp on.
When activated. the speaker is connected after a very short
delay and the red LED switches on. The amp is powered off by
switching off the power key. The red led will fade very slowly,
indicating discharge of the filtering capacitors and the speaker
will be disconnected after few seconds.
5 .2 The two rail fuse sockets.
Each rail fuse holder is protected by a golden lid. which can be
removed using a coin. A red point LED, located near the fuse
indicate that the fuse is burned when it glows.
SOUND OUALITY OPTIM IZATION
6 .1 Warm-up sonic effect.
lf the power amplifier has not been powered off for a few days,
theoptimum sound quality is only reached after 3Ominutes. This
delay has been optimized to be minimal and the sonic quality
when lust powered on is much higher than other quality power
amplif iers.
6 .2 Speaker polarity.
Even if you have a phase inverter on your preamplif ier (as on the
GOLDMUND MIMESIS 2 or MIMESIS 7). and even if you have
carefully selected the proper line phase (see in next paragraph),
there is a possibility to again increase the sonic quality of your
speakers by reverting the polarity of the speaker cable amp
termination. But since the line phase and the speaker polarity
interfere to each other, you have to experiment carefully all the
combinations before picking the right one.
lf your preamp has an absolute phase inverter, this will interfere
too. lf it has not, don'tforgetthe result willdepend of the source.
most of the record and CD being recorded without care for the
absolute phase. Be patient..
-3-
6.3 Main line ohase inversion.
The sonic quality of your GOLD CUBE may be slightly improved
if the main AC line is properly connected. Try to invert the plug
of your amplifier, using a special adapter.
We recommend that you proceed caref ully to try this. You must
do it in combination with the speaker polarity and/or with absolute
phase switching to be sure of the result.
SAFETY FEATURES
The GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE amplifier provides very sophisticated
features to protectthe amplifierandthe speaker against all
kind of mishandle or comoonent failure.
Protection against DC.
The GOLD CUBE is a DC-coupled amplifier. lf the associated
preamplifier is badly designed or defective (often true for the
tube preamps), the speaker could be damaged. The detection
circuit of the GOLD CUBE is totally immune to any sonic effect
but will immediately switch off the speaker if such a malf unction
occurs.
The speaker will be immediately and automatically reconnected
as soon as the perturbation disappears.
Protection against HF oscillations.
In the same way, the speaker will be disconnected if a large
amount of high frequency oscillation is present and shows a
danger forthe tweeters, even if these frequencies remain unnoticed.
The amplifier returns to normal if the oscillation disappears.
Protection against short-circuits.
lf one output is short-circuited by accident and the current
becomes too high, one of the rail fuse may blow.
In this case, the small LED located at the top ofthe defective fuse
lid will glow.
To replace the defective fuse, switch the amplifier off for 1O
minutes f irst. Then open the top f use cover with a coin or a large
screwdriver. The f use loader is then accessible under the golden
cover and must be removed by turning it off with a screwdriver.
-4-
You must use a 5 Amps fast f use (or 6.3 Amps if you use very low
efficiency speakers) or 8 Amps ultra-fast.
Then put the cover back in position and switch the power on if
the short-circuit has been detected and removed.
To avoid the f uses to blow, avoid to short-circuit the outDut
terminals accidentally.
There is no risk to leave the soeaker terminals unconnected
when the amo is on,
8. MAINTENANCE
The GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE is gold plated with a 1O microns
18kt gold layer, using the best ieweler technology. lt should
never alter externally, except if mishandled.
To clean the amplifier, use a very soft cloth to avoid scratching
the gold surface.
Otherwise the GOLDMUND GOLD CUBE amplifier requires no
maintenance. For the audio purist who wants to keep his amp
sounding as new. we only recommend that after a year or two,
you have a technician or an official GOLDMUND representative
readjustthe DC offset. Thisvery simple operation takes onlytwo
minutes and will give you the safety of long years of unmatched
sound quality.
IMPORTANT NOTICE :
The Goldcube should never be left powered on, without input
cable connection to a preamplifier. lf warmed up without connection.
please insert short-circuit plugs delivered with the cube
to avoid any RF oscillation.
