100 Years ago 1910
The Monroe mill formerly know as the
Caledonia mill of the Homestake company at
Terraville will start dropping stamps today, being
the fifth plant of the company to resume operations
since the suspension last November.
Sunday while running a motor between the
Terra and Golden Gate shafts on the 300 level Eli
Traut was knocked from the motor with such a
force that three ribs were broken.
The county commissioners yesterday approved
the bonds of various banks that have been designated
as depositories for county funds.
75 Years Ago 1936
A total of 4,691 books were borrowed from the
Homestake Free library during the month of
February according to the regular monthly report
of the librarian Miss Werdna Lellar. The daily
average circulation of books was 1MM and an
average of 216 people visited the library daily,
the report shows.
A smart new shop devoted exclusively to
women's shoes and accessories will open its door
to the public at MQ30 o'clock Saturday morning at
719 West Main next door to the Smart Shop. The
new store will be known as the Lead Bootery and
will be operated by Mrs. Flora Lestle and her
brother, Leonard Johnson.
Despite the warm weather of the past few days,
the ice in the American Legion Skating rink at
Blacktail is in fine shape and the rink will be
open for skating this afternoon and evening.
50 Years Ago 1960
The Deadwood Recreation Center will be discussed
Tuesday at the regular luncheon Chamber
of Commerce Robert Ruth, president announced .
Tom Holt, director of the center will describe
activities and progress of the center.

retired from active service with the Homstake

Herseth Sandlin invites high
school students to participate in
congressional art competition
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Herseth
Sandlin invited all South Dakota High
School Students, including those in public,
private, tribal and alternative schools or educational
cooperatives, to participate in the
annual Congressional Art Competition. The
Congressional Art Competition is a national
competition organiYed by Congress in partnership
with state organiYations including
the South Dakota Arts Council and South
Dakotans for the Arts`South Dakota Alliance
for Arts Education.
“It is my great pleasure to invite all South
Dakota high school students to take part in
this annual competition,” Rep. Herseth
Sandlin said. “ I am proud to sponsor this
esteemed competition, and I hope our talented
students from across the state will participate.”
The Congressional Art Competition began
in 19M2, providing members of Congress
with an opportunity to recogniYe talent in
their home districts. Since 19M2, more than
650,000 high school students have participated
in the competition.
Among the submissions, the first place
winning entry will be displayed in the
]nited States Capitol Complex for one year
and invited to a Congressional Reception to
be held on June 17th, 2010 in Washington,
DC to unveil their works. The second place
winning entry will be displayed in Rep.
Herseth Sandlin's Washington, DC office.
The deadline for a high-resolution JPEG
picture of the artwork along with a PDF of
the student application form to be received
by the South Dakota Arts Council is April

A Civil Defense planning session will be held
March 2 t 7Q30 p.m. at the Lawrence County
courthouse in Deadwood it was announced by
Richard T. McGrath, county civil Defense director.

First in a series of difficult decisions facing the
Lead Deadwood Board of Education oldest wing
of the Deadwood school complex will be demolished
as soon as possible.
The fir that blaYed through the Deadwood
Junior High School and elementary Sunday
destroyed many a textbook and student notebook.
But thanks to local efforts, the much needed
replacement of the teacher-student supplies may
soon be piling up.
Prayers for snow have been answered in abundance
at Deer Mountain Ski Area. The slopes
have received 1M inches of new snow to over the
30 inch base.
10 Years Ago 2000
Even though last weekend's winter storm
dropped more than 1M inches of snow on the
Northern Black Hills , area resorts have felt the
pinch of less than normal amounts of the white
money generator.
Frawley Ranch Inc., got the approval from
Lawrence county Planning and \oning
Commission for a preliminary plat to add 21 new
home sites for the 1992-approved Planned ]nit
Development for the property.
Sperfish High School seniors Megan Noem
and Marie Christopherson were named winners
of the Norwest Banks Community Scholarship
Fund. Norwest Bank President John Senden of
Spearfish presented the $1,000 awards. The
scholarships are awarded to deserving students
throughout the region who will attend an institution
of higher learning in their home state area.
