100 Years ago 1910<br />

The Monroe mill formerly know as the<br />

Caledonia mill of the Homestake company at<br />

Terraville will start dropping stamps today, being<br />

the fifth plant of the company to resume operations<br />

since the suspension last November.<br />

Sunday while running a motor between the<br />

Terra and Golden Gate shafts on the 300 level Eli<br />

Traut was knocked from the motor with such a<br />

force that three ribs were broken.<br />

The county comm<strong>is</strong>sioners yesterday approved<br />

the bonds of various banks that have been designated<br />

as depositories for county funds.<br />

75 Years Ago 1936<br />

A total of 4,691 books were borrowed from the<br />

Homestake Free library during the month of<br />

February according to the regular monthly report<br />

of the librarian M<strong>is</strong>s Werdna Lellar. The daily<br />

average circulation of books was 1MM and an<br />

average of 216 people v<strong>is</strong>ited the library daily,<br />

the report shows.<br />

A smart new shop devoted exclusively to<br />

women's shoes and accessories will open its door<br />

to the public at MQ30 o'clock Saturday morning at<br />

719 West Main next door to the Smart Shop. The<br />

new store will be known as the Lead Bootery and<br />

will be operated by Mrs. Flora Lestle and her<br />

brother, Leonard Johnson.<br />

Despite the warm weather of the past few days,<br />

the ice in the American Legion Skating rink at<br />

Blacktail <strong>is</strong> in fine shape and the rink will be<br />

open for skating th<strong>is</strong> afternoon and evening.<br />

50 Years Ago 1960<br />

The Deadwood Recreation Center will be d<strong>is</strong>cussed<br />

Tuesday at the regular luncheon Chamber<br />

of Commerce Robert Ruth, president announced .<br />

Tom Holt, director of the center will describe<br />

activities and progress of the center.<br />

Steve Nichols and A.E.Odell, both of Lead<br />

retired from active service with the Homstake<br />

Herseth Sandlin invites high<br />

school students to participate in<br />

congressional art competition<br />

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Herseth<br />

Sandlin invited all South Dakota High<br />

School Students, including those in public,<br />

private, tribal and alternative schools or educational<br />

cooperatives, to participate in the<br />

annual Congressional Art Competition. The<br />

Congressional Art Competition <strong>is</strong> a national<br />

competition organiYed by Congress in partnership<br />

with state organiYations including<br />

the South Dakota Arts Council and South<br />

Dakotans for the Arts`South Dakota Alliance<br />

for Arts Education.<br />

“It <strong>is</strong> <strong>my</strong> great pleasure to invite all South<br />

Dakota high school students to take part in<br />

th<strong>is</strong> annual competition,” Rep. Herseth<br />

Sandlin said. “ I am proud to sponsor th<strong>is</strong><br />

esteemed competition, and I hope our talented<br />

students from across the state will participate.”<br />

The Congressional Art Competition began<br />

in 19M2, providing members of Congress<br />

with an opportunity to recogniYe talent in<br />

their home d<strong>is</strong>tricts. Since 19M2, more than<br />

650,000 high school students have participated<br />

in the competition.<br />

Among the subm<strong>is</strong>sions, the first place<br />

winning entry will be d<strong>is</strong>played in the<br />

]nited States Capitol Complex for one year<br />

and invited to a Congressional Reception to<br />

be held on June 17th, 2010 in Washington,<br />

DC to unveil their works. The second place<br />

winning entry will be d<strong>is</strong>played in Rep.<br />

Herseth Sandlin's Washington, DC office.<br />

picture of the artwork along with a PDF of<br />

the student application form to be received<br />

by the South Dakota Arts Council <strong>is</strong> April<br />

Lawrence county Planning and \oning<br />

Comm<strong>is</strong>sion for a preliminary plat to add 21 new<br />

home sites for the 1992-approved Planned ]nit<br />

Development for the property.<br />

Sperf<strong>is</strong>h High School seniors Megan Noem<br />

and Marie Chr<strong>is</strong>topherson were named winners<br />

of the Norwest Banks Community Scholarship<br />

Fund. Norwest Bank President John Senden of<br />

Spearf<strong>is</strong>h presented the $1,000 awards. The<br />

scholarships are awarded to deserving students<br />

throughout the region who will attend an institution<br />

of higher learning in their home state area.
