him a job as sign-waver and offered him a<br />
fresh start. Since then, he has excelled in<br />
h<strong>is</strong> position, becoming the leading signwaver<br />
and generating the most buzz for<br />
the company, Riley said.<br />
AHe's had a rough life,D said Riley. ABut<br />
he's actually one of the people who wants<br />
the make the change. He doesn't realize<br />
how much talent he has. People come in<br />
all the time talking about Jesse. They tell<br />
meI 'I was having a lousy day until I saw<br />
Jesse on the corner, and he really made me<br />
laugh.'D<br />
A native of Belle Fourche, Nikodym<br />
said he became estranged from h<strong>is</strong> family<br />
at age 11, going from Afoster home to foster<br />
homeD in the state of South Dakota. As<br />
a teenager, he became involved with drugs<br />
and went through numerous treatment centers.<br />
With h<strong>is</strong> drug record, he could only<br />
find work doing odd jobs.<br />
In fact, he said he's never been able to<br />
actually file a tax return.<br />
Then, nine months ago, he was convicted<br />
of a felony. As a felon, Nikodym's<br />
chances of gaining employment sank even<br />
further.<br />

from getting a positive reaction out of the<br />
people that pass by Ah<strong>is</strong> corner.D<br />
AYou should really bring out the liveliness<br />
in people,D Nikodym said. APositive<br />
energy <strong>is</strong> the best energy.D<br />
He said h<strong>is</strong> favorite music to l<strong>is</strong>ten to on<br />
h<strong>is</strong> iPod include bands like The Gorillaz,<br />
Moldy Peaches, and mostly hippy music.<br />
But h<strong>is</strong> manner<strong>is</strong>ms on the sidewalk are<br />
more like Elv<strong>is</strong> Presley's than Jan<strong>is</strong><br />
Joplin's. He rocks h<strong>is</strong> hips, spins h<strong>is</strong> arrow<br />

elderly gentlemen said, AYou rock, dude,<br />
you rock[D<br />
The man's friend chimed in. AYou are<br />
awesome[D he shouted at Nikodym. The<br />
same two men came back that day and<br />
tipped him again.<br />
It was a day as memorable for the tips<br />
as it was for the conversation. Nikodym<br />
rememberedI AI couldn't stop thinkingI<br />
'Here I am having a fluent conversation<br />
with two 70-year-old men about rock.<br />
They were very fluent in the college<br />
lingo.'D<br />
Liberty Tax can count on Nikodym to<br />
stay until the end of the tax season, he<br />
