WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOURSELF LATELY? 

After college, I taught school for 10 years in Iowa and Nebraska. I was a high school 

football coach and after 10 years I won more than I lost. It was fun, but I could not afford the 

life style I wanted. 

For the last 20 years I have built my life around popcorn. (how exciting and interesting?) I 

worked for a popcorn processor in Nebraska, a food distributor in Denver and now I work for a 

vegetable oil refiner in Louisiana. During this period most of my sales were to the movie 

industry. I travel all over the world selling my oils. We are the largest supplier to the theatrer 

industry of popcorn oils and toppings. I am responsible for the concession sales and manage 

the department. If you have bought popcorn in a theater lately, thank you for helping support 

my family. If not, go do it! 

A year and half ago, we moved to Lafayette, LA. This is in the heart of Cajun country. It is a 

long way from North English, and I truly enjoy living here! The first thing I did when we moved 

here was give away 5 snow shovels. Second was to learn to love Cajun music and food. 

Crawfish is a way of life! 

Sports and hunting still remain important to me, although, grandchildren have now 

overtaken them for top billing. 

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL? 

Sports and friends remain most in my mind. I remain close to Ron Mahannah and Tony 

Miller. I think about Bob Cobb whenever I watch someone run. I beat Bob in a race once. It 

was from the top of the hill on Main to the creamery. He was too drunk to run in a straight line 

and was running from one side of the road to the other and I was able to run straight. That 

was the same summer he went to the service. 

WHAT BOTHERS YOU THE MOST ABOUT GROWING OLD? 

Growing older has been both fun and a pain. I have enjoyed my life and everything I have 

done, from raising kids, marriage, to work. I have not enjoyed the physical things like not 

healing as fast, extra weight, lack of stamina. I do like my gray hair (what I still have). It is 

hard to realize I am over the hill. I feel the same. I went to a college reunion and was amazed 

at how old the others looked. I did not feel as old as they looked!

I’ve been working for Modern Woodmen of America (a life insurance company; I work in the 

office, I don’t sell insurance). For over 11 years. I spend time with family - my daughter and 

family live in Lakeland. Out-of-state kids and grandkids visited me in March. Cheryl (Morse) 

Stufflebeam from the class of ’67 visited me in May for a few days. Cheryl and I were friends 

and neighbors as pre-schoolers and have kept in touch all these years. My sister and I visited 

our cousins in North English in 2005 ( I should have waited one more year for the reunion!!) 


High school was good. I remember the fun things. Band, Mr. Brainard, basketball, going to 

football games in the fall (I still like sports). Moving to the new school (was it our sophomore 

year?)

Proud to have been married 37 years! Still have home day care and for the most part still 

enjoy it. 

Mike and I love to travel, whether it’s Napa Valley, CA or weekend road trips. We have 

some great friends we enjoy traveling with, cooking dinners with or going to movies. 

Our kids live fairly close and we love spending time with them. 


I’m sure we had some fun times. I know I wouldn’t want to be a high schooler now days! 

Ours was a simpler, easier time to be growing up.

Todd, 35, our oldest, lived in Portland, OR for five years. He works at Alliant Energy; (Joy)

Kelly retired in ’01 so I thought it was my turn. Actually, I didn’t retire, I just quit!! I’d worked 

with conduct disorder children for the last 10 years at Grant Wood AEA. My patience and 

stamina ran out! I do enjoy the freedom of being able to do whatever I want - whenever I want! 

I have a great time with my grandchildren, it is a great blessing to be a grandmother, they 

are the love of my life! 

We built our home in Robins in 2003. I thought I should have a new home once in my life, 

since my name is Newhouse. 

Kelly and I have done some cruising, traveled in the US and abroad, which has been very 

exciting and great fun! 

We have become bicyclists, I rode 800 miles last summer and fall, which I enjoyed 

immensely. We took some trips to various places to check out new bike trails. I was in pretty 

good shape for a 58 year old lady and then last fall I developed some health problems, and 

have been battling allergies and food sensitivities since Sept., I really took my health for 

granted. I’m working very hard at getting healthy again! 


It was fun moving into the new high school, one of my fond memories is working on the 

Prom the Mystic Depths. Bob Cobb invited me to go to prom with him that year, so that is a 

special memory. 


I really can’t believe I’m this old, but a few wrinkles, gray hair and varicose veins are a few 

things that remind me daily that a few years have gone by. They have been good ones for me 

because they have flown by quickly.

We now have 4 grandchildren, 2 here in Iowa and 2 in California. We enjoy traveling to 

California to see Scott and his wife, Barb (2 children) and Suzanne. Scott and Suzanne are 

both attorneys in Los Angeles. Our oldest son, Shawn, is a design engineer working at 

Amana/Whirlpool. He and wife, Stacey, live in Williamsburg with their two children. Helen 

retired 5 years ago. I still work for the Area Substance Abuse Council in Cedar Rapids. I’ve 

been there 21 years (17 as Director). I enjoy the work. Nonprofits don’t pay the best but there 

are lots of other rewards and I seem to have a knack for budgeting. It must have been those 

math classes under Mrs. Devine. 


I had a great time in high school. I remember being extremely shy but I had a circle of good 

friends. Most of my clear memories are of times I got in trouble. The time we took the school 

pickup and were stopped by my uncle for erratic driving, the time Hurlbut got so upset with me 

that he grabbed me by the shirt collar and threw me up against the wall, the theme I wrote on 

Bob-ology for Mrs. Hearst, the infamous Interstate 80 incident. Most of my memories are 

pretty positive, football and basketball practices, not so much the actual game. We were pretty 

bad but I remember how good it felt to be high scorer one game. We got trounced but we 

knew going in we didn’t have a chance. Gink Cope was fun in practice but he was the worst 

basketball coach. Poker in the movie theater projection area, hanging out in the concession 

stand at school. I still don’t understand why study hall teachers thought there was so much 

work in selling pop and candy that we needed to be in there cleaning every study hall. 


I’m mostly enjoying growing old. I’d like to have my waistline and hair back but other than 

that, life has been good. Helen and I have been married since 1968 so that seems to be 

working out. The kids are all doing well and we really enjoy the grandkids. 

One thing that bothers me is that I’ve lost touch with an awful lot of friends over the years. I 

recently learned of Ron Aggeson’s death. I had a nice long conversation with him at our last 

reunion and was looking forward to seeing him again at this year’s reunion. 

My memory is also getting worse. When I was writing this I had a tough time remembering 

Mrs. Devine’s name. Attending the reunion planning meetings with Ed, Phyllis, Marsha, and 

John Hester has helped. They bring back a lot of those memories. Not so much Bull, his 

memory is worse than mine.

36th year of number crunching - tax accountant. My son, Brien, has been with me @ 

SMATAX for 5 years. Rhonda and I are in our 29th year of marriage - great journey still. 

Reside in same home for 28 years - just 3 miles from my office and they are constructing a 

world class golf course with Marriott Hotel & Convention Center near my home. So I don’t 

have to move to a golf course community. Also, in process of acquiring a new beach home at 

Ocean City, MD about 150 miles east of our home. Looking forward to our first grandchild from 

our daughter, Audrey. 


Every single day was fun except the day Squeaky Bill (Iowa County Sheriff) arrived and 

invited me to the front office to investigate mooning activities. He even visited my mother who 

was convinced by him of my certain jail sentence. Aunt Delphi Devine was the best math 

teacher ever! 

Great sports memories. 


Not being the selfish person I was. No more big deals - the only one was me.

Have bought some land between Knoxville and Pella, Iowa on the Red Rock Dam and been 

in the process of jumping through hoops in the attempt to get a house put on it - and I don’t 

jump through hoops very well anymore; AT ALL ANYMORE. It is taking forever. 

My daughters are married or engaged. Holly is in Greentop, MO; married to an OTR trucker. 

Heidi is married and an RN in the OB Unit at the Ottumwa Hospital. Hettie is engaged and is 

working towards her RN and working full time at the Albia Hospital. 


Riding buses to and from school forever; the tunnel to the gym from the old high school; 

going down to the football field for marching bank practice (again from the old high school). 

You know? I think Carolyn Brower, Dick Coffman and I are the only ones that can say we went 

to all four schools in the district! I THINK. 


NOT BEING ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING (PHYSICALLY) THAT I USED TO DO!!! REALLY 

PXXXXX ME OFF. Otherwise, I think and feel like I did 40 years ago (pretty much) and can’t 

figure out where the last 40 years have gone!!! Actually some say that I’m ornerier.

I’ve been doing my darndest to act like I’m contributing to the class reunion committee. 

These 4 people have handled the last 7 reunions pretty well without mine or anyone else’s 

help, (I really think they just do it so they can get together and drink). 

Since the last update Linda and I sold our business in 1989 and moved to Burlington and then 

to Kansas City. In 1995 we bought our original business back, (we actually missed the farmers, 

did not care for big town life and we wanted to be closer to our grandchildren). We have since 

expanded with the purchase of a feed mill in Sweetland and a fertilizer plant in Muscatine. 

We have begun the process of selling business, and God only knows what we will do then. 

Us 1966 grads will needs lots of medical insurance for at least 5 - 7 years and most of my 

friends who have retired are going bonkers with nothing to do. I have considered either 

spending my time chasing Linda around the house or becoming a gigalo. My bride of 33 years 

says I’m not qualified for either. 

We bought a farm 2 miles north of N.E. and try to spend as much time as possible there. 

We built a pond and have a campsite out there. We actually cook all of our meals over an 

open fire and only use the generator for making coffee and only answer our cell phones when 

it’s a family member calling. It is unbelievably peaceful out there. This has given Linda and I 

time to spend with all 4 of our parents, who we are still lucky enough to have. 

My days of association and civic activity have come to a close. For the last 25 years I have 

either served on the state or national agribusiness board and served as president of the 

National Association in 2004. It’s time for the young people to serve on city councils, school 

boards and all the industry stuff. 


I remember Delphi Devine telling me, in front of the class, that I was the dumbest algebra 

student she ever had. 

I remember Hurlbut quitting the musical, South Pacific, one week before it started. 

I remember Gregan and those nasty boys getting called into the principal’s office and later 

the Sheriff for sticking their butts out of car windows. 

I wish that I would have gotten to know Bob Cobb better. 


Do you realize that we were all born in the first half of the last century. At one time I could 

double my age and still be comfortable that I would be around. Let’s see, 2X58 = (old as

Last summer we took a trip through the northwest states for two weeks. This year we’ve 

planned several short trips. 

I still like to go antiquing; to museums, and hiking with friends and family. 

I’m sorry I can’t be at the reunion. We’ve a prior family commitment.

Since Bob retired in 2004 from teaching (however he worked 90 days in 04/05 and 120 this 

school year) we have enjoyed traveling (mostly in the winter as we prefer warm, sunny days by 

a beach). I serve at a food pantry, volunteer at a thrift store, sing in our church choir, enjoy 

yard work and thoroughly love spending time with our daughters and their families& football, 

cheerleading and cross country in the fall, basketball, bank concerts and piano recitals in the 

winter, track in the spring, helping the 4 year old learn to ride his bike and coaxing 1 year old 

Kelsie to walk. Going to bed at 9:00 after all of the above! 


I really enjoyed band, choir and Oklahoma. I remember being very upset because we 

didn’t get to go on a class trip since the Class of ’65 was so bad on their trip. Just wasn’t 

fair! 


Realizing that we may not have many more years with our parents. Bob and I are very 

blessed to have both sets in good health. What an awesome thing it is for our grandchildren to 

know and spend time with their great-grandparents.

I’m starting my 23rd year at Center Point-Urbana Community School as District Secretary. 

We have been spending our winter vacation in AZ and a spring vacation in Mexico or 

Caribbean - definitely somewhere warmer than Iowa! Ted resumed coaching 9 years ago, so 

we have little social life away from the football field from August through November. Last year, 

the field was dedicated and named Rogers Field . Ted says that’s because I had as much to 

do with his success as he did, and they didn’t want him to feel bad! We enjoy time with our 

granddaughter, eating out and ready whenever anyone says go . 


I remember walking the tracks to school, passing notes, watermelon hunting, Saturday 

nights at the North English theatre, going to A Hard Day’s Night in CR, the musicals, Junior 

and Senior Prom, PE uniforms and Creamery Picnics. Mr. Brainard’s music class, Mr. 

Ackerman’s typing and Mrs. Lucky’s office practice were probably my preferred teachers. 

History with Huston and Devine math were most definitely not my favorites. I remember a lot 

of personal tidbits that are best not mentioned in writing! 


I don’t have a clue - I’ve only matured! Maybe there will be someone at the reunion I can 

ask!

Since our last reunion in 2001 I was employed by the Amana Society Building Dept. Due to 

upper management, they decided to close down the Building Dept. That was in July, 2004. 

Now I am working with several construction contractors on various levels.

Recent news since seeing all would have to include that a couple years ago, after 32 years 

managing large computer systems (testing, certification, and nationwide implementation) for 

the US Department of Veterans Affairs, I retired. It has been wonderful to have the ability to do 

things - tasks, hobbies, travel, etc. - more accordingly to my own planning and schedule 

instead of by the schedule careers so often dictate. I have accomplished a lot of updates to 

our house, spent a lot more time enjoying the outdoors, enjoyed more time traveling, and many 

other freedoms the last couple years. 

Last year we traveled for 16 days throughout Europe - 10 countries in all - and that was 

certainly a highlight. We also went to the Stratford Festival in Ontario for several days seeing 4 

plays and musicals and enjoying Canada. Recently we completed 2 weeks in a combination 

Cruise and Land Tour of Alaska, the inside passage, Denali Nat’l Park, etc. In the last year 

travel has also included 3 thrips to California including San Francisco, Sacramento, Los 

Angeles, Wine Country (where sister Maggie lives in Sonoma), and a couple trips to Florida 

during winter (sister Janice lives in Naples). 

My children have both finished college - yeah!! - Kim majoring in English and 

Communications at the University of Iowa (my Alma Mater) and Ryan majoring in 

Engineering/Computer Science at the Univ. of Illinois Champaign Urbana. Kim works in 

Chicago area now and Ryan has worked for the last year with the University in Computer 

Systems Development but wants to move back to the Chicago Land area by fall, if possible, 

and get a job in this area. 


Pretty easy still to remember classmate friends and also those special teachers, moving 

into the new building from the old H.S., Fri. night football games, and the year the coach talked 

my Dad into giving up my chores help to let me play basketball. Sigourney and What Cheer 

dances, cruising Main Street. Also remember being too shy at that time to do much dating yet 

- too bad because of the special girls we had there - shoot! But made up for that a lot in 

college, and beyond! Managed to stay single until 27 - lol. 

Teachers I could never forget include Mrs. Divine (so smart), Mr. Hurlbut (fun and 

controversial!), Mr. Selgabee (sp?) (habla Espanol?), Mr. Brainard (how lucky EV was to have 

him!), Mr. Huston (what a riot), and Mrs. Hurst because I know she was a good teacher tho 

English was surely not my favorite subject (conjugate this sentence - oh puh-leeeze, lol!!), and 

being in Mrs. Walk’s English class when President Kennedy was shot and Pam coming in and 

telling us about it. (Do you remember that Pam?)


Hmmm - I don’t really feel old yet tho I know we are headed that way. For sure the pepper 

has pretty much disappeared from the salt & pepper hair along with quite a bit of the hair 

itself!!lol But I still feel blessed to be healthy and try very much to stay physically and mentally 

very active. I enjoy so many things that I don’t like seeing how time flies!! 

Closing Note: I’ve written quite a bit here because I feel bad about missing this reunion - my 

family is having our reunion in western Iowa the same weekend and my mother having passed 

away just in January - we will all be together for 3 to 4 days. I will try hard not to let such a 

conflict get in the way of our next class reunion and I hope to see many of you then, not to 

mention in the meantime! I’ve heard from or seen a number of you over the years, and 

recently. I’d also love to hear from some of you (even if just an E-mail - see above for contact 

information) that I haven’t been in touch with for some time. 

Also kudos & thanks to Marsha, Ed, John H. and others who have been in contact and 

organizing this reunion. Finally I’m so glad we are joining to do the new Memorial for Bob.

I am starting my 10th year as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for State of Iowa. I enjoy 

my work even though at times it’s very difficult. Terry continues to work as swine specialist for 

Iowa State Extension Service. Last October he visited swine farms in Denmark. He met me in 

Frankfurt, Germany. We spent a month with his cousins in Germany. Terry’s dad was from 

southern Germany, near the Black Forest so the trip was beautiful. Our time now is spent 

visiting our children. Gabriele lives in Kansas City. Gretchen lives near St. Louis. Trent 

teaches Ag at North Polk High School which is just north of Ankeny. 


I remember sitting beside Rosey in Mr. Ackerman’s typing class. Rosey’s fingers flew on 

the typing tests. All I could focus on was the rings of her return carrier as she typed. My 

speed was very slow due to my distraction and my lack of fine motor skills! Mr. Ackerman was 

a great teacher and coach. 


I hate how I stumble! I loved downhill skiing when I was younger. It’s been so long since 

we have gone skiing. I am not sure Terry will let me try it again. Several years ago I broke my 

ankle in 3 places and had to use a wheelchair for 3 months. He was a terrible caretaker. He 

said I was a worse patient! The experience made me a better rehab counselor.

Jeremy - 25 Jeremy is in his last year of law school at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He 

has signed with a law firm in Washington, DC when he graduates. Guess I’ve lost him to the 

east coast. Oh well, I can always visit.

Still working as a legal assistant at the law firm in Sigourney. Guess I must like it since I will 

be there 20 years in January. 

Have been enjoying having Jamie so close and especially getting to see Riley as much as I 

can. If I don’t see him every week I go into withdrawal. What FUN he is! 

I have gotten hooked on traveling, especially international travel, with my sister. In 

September we are going to Italy and hope to travel some of the route my dad took in WWII. 

My mom passed away almost two years ago. I really miss having her wealth of information 

& wisdom. 


One of the many things I remember is the old high school (white wood building) and the 

snow coming in on the window sills. 

Remember in Home Ec we always wanted to have Linda Hahn Gilliland in our group when 

cooking. She knew how to do it and hers always turned out GREAT! 

I enjoyed playing in the band; pep and marching band at the games. We had some great 

times!! 

Mr. Brainard was one of my favorite teachers and guess who was my least? You guessed it 

- Mrs. Reiss (sorry James). She seemed to have it in for me!

Actually not being able to sleep in on a Saturday morning when I don’t have to be up for 

anything special. Guess I’ve been working for too many years. I really am in good health and 

don’t feel THAT OLD.

Not much has changed in the past 5 years. Took on a new partner (other one got too old). 

Association Management part of our business continues to grow as the associations grows, 

which means less time to do architectural work (i.e. new White House). 

Playing as much golf as time allows but my hectic travel schedule doesn’t allow too much - 

18 trips in first half of 2006. Jan was able to go to Phoenix, Orlando, New York, Vermont and a 

couple of other places as she took a year’s leave of absence to spend more time with her dad 

(Dr. Larry) who is ailing. Had great fun planning this reunion as I did with the others. 


Where I was when JFK was shot (Helen Walk’s English Class). The antics we used to pull 

- tame by today’s action. I actually feel sorry for some of the grief we caused our teachers - I 

guess what goes around, comes around. I’d do it again in a minute. 


I can’t hear or see anything – maybe that’s for the better! - everything else is working fine, 

except for my memory. Injuries don’t heal, I can’t eat anything anymore.

I’ve worked for dentists the last 20 years - currently office manager with Dr. Niewald. Jim is 

in the tire wholesale business. We’re blessed with three grandchildren who fill our lives with 

joy. Michelle is expecting our 4th, due in February. Have missed being closer to family back 

home but have met lots of people as we moved and tried different occupations as Jim was 

transferred in his job. Have lived in Lee’s Summit almost 20 years. 


I like to remember the productions of plays under Mr. Hurlbut. We had some really good 

ones like South Pacific . Hated PE and math. Challenged by Mrs. Hurst’s English classes. 

We had some great classmates. I’d like to go back and be less shy and have more fun! Yes, I 

really was shy. 


Realizing how close we are to being the older generation and the aches and pains that 

came with turning 50.

being with classmates.

My wife of 39 years, Jane and I left Iowa in 1990. We have been working as a Property 

Management Team on private estates and condo high-rise properties. We have been from 

Denver, Colorado to central Florida and presently living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We manage the 

estate of a high profile couple. He is the CEO/Pres. of an International car rental business; she 

is the Mayor of Tulsa. 

Our oldest daughter, Angie and her husband, Tom, live in Cedar Rapids. Angie is in 

management with Younker's at Lindale. Tom is with CRST based in Cedar Rapids. 

Our youngest daughter, Tami and her husband, Scott, live in Manhattan, Kansas. Tami is a 

licensed hairdresser working with a beauty supply company. Scott is a career army man 

stationed at nearby Fort Riley. 

I still love to work on cars. Most of my free time is spent on woodworking and classic car 

restoration. 


I could hardly wait to escape!!! Our new Principal decided that "only athletes" could drive to 

school. I worked after school so I drove anyway. I got detention more than once. Mr. Shaw with 

Industrial Arts was my most influential teacher. 


The body aches that keep me from the activities of younger years. 

Bob Cobb Memorial - I was happy to hear you were taking on the responsibility of replacing 

Bob's memorial. Thank you very much. 

My last conversation with Bob was before he left for Vietnam. He was home in North English 

on leave and stopped by the DX station to see my Dad. Dad called me so we could visit before 

Bob left the country. I was drafted in January, 68 and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas at that 

time. I received my orders for Vietnam the day after news of Bob's death. I cleared base and 

we drove home to Iowa (Jane and our 5 week old daughter). We were in North English for 

Bob's funeral service. 

Sorry we can't be there to celebrate with you on the 15th. We have already committed to a 

flight home in early August. Have a great time. Keep in touch for future gatherings. 

I left Iowa in 1990. We have been working as a Property Management Team on private estates

Family: Mother passed away August 2003. Father and I are still able to spend the winters in 

Texas and the summers in Illinois. 

I am finding retirement to be one of life's easier transitions. Hallelujah! I am sleeping --- as 

much as I want. I have even learned to "sleep in." Who says you can't learn new tricks? 

Northern Illinois University served me well. I taught 27 years, plus or minus 3& in junior high 

and high school special education. I taught all subjects at least once, and ran a Texas content 

mastery center many of those years. I also taught 3 years in a psychiatric hospital. It was 

never dull! But, there is always a lot of voluntary overtime in teaching. 

I have lived in San Antonio for almost 30 years with brief stays in Carbondale, IL, Streater, IL, 

Riverside, CA, Albuquerque, NM, and Wichita Falls , TX. I have enjoyed traveling and 

appreciated loyal and faithful friends. San Antonio has grown and changed a good deal, but 

maintains a reputation for being a little slower and more friendly than most cities. 


What I remember about my school years in English Valley is that despite all the difficulties 

and animosities the adults were experiencing in developing and building the school system, we 

students were allowed to cross boundaries, interact, learn, play, and form life-time friendships. 


You all seem to be getting so much better looking and interesting as the years go by.
