<strong>Module</strong> description<br />

Great Brita<strong>in</strong> has a long tradition of sport and cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be one of <strong>the</strong> World’s foremost<br />

nations <strong>–</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g 4th <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2008 <strong>Olympic</strong> medal table and host<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong> &<br />

Paralympic <strong>Games</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2012. You will be taken through <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> ancient <strong>Olympic</strong>s<br />

through to <strong>the</strong> modern day and ga<strong>in</strong> knowledge and understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Olympic</strong> sports<br />

through participation, observation and skills acquisition.<br />

What are some of <strong>the</strong> key characteristics that make an elite sportsman? We will focus on<br />

speed, accuracy and distance. Those concepts will be <strong>in</strong>troduced through practical sessions<br />

<strong>in</strong> typically British sports of Fenc<strong>in</strong>g and Archery.<br />

9:30am - Introduction to <strong>the</strong> module and <strong>the</strong> structures for sport <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> from grass roots to<br />

11:00am <strong>–</strong> <strong>The</strong> legacy of London 2012. What London and <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> are gett<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Games</strong> (TBC).<br />

Tuesday 9 July<br />

9:30am <strong>–</strong> Coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> and Coach<strong>in</strong>g for Elite Athletes. Gareth Tyler<br />

11:30am <strong>–</strong> Mak<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g elite athletes and limits to human performance. Includ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Each student is required to make a presentation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>i-debate, ei<strong>the</strong>r for or aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong><br />

proposal from <strong>the</strong> perspective of a chosen <strong>in</strong>terest group.<br />

- Computer based research on <strong>the</strong> legacy of 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beij<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Olympic</strong>s.<br />

- Research some iconic <strong>Olympic</strong> moments; <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Black Power Salute (Mexico<br />

1968), <strong>the</strong> boycott’s of 1980 and 1984 <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Games</strong>, Major drug cases (Ben<br />

Johnson, Marion Jones, Greek spr<strong>in</strong>ters <strong>in</strong> 2004); <strong>The</strong> physical athletes/major world<br />

records or w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g performances (Bob Beaman, Mark Spitz, Steve Redgrave, Usa<strong>in</strong><br />

Bolt, Jackie Joyner-Kersee Nadia Comaneci, Birgit Fischer Schmidt etc).<br />

- Legacies from recent <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Games</strong> <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g London 2012.<br />

- <strong>The</strong> impact of high-profile failed drugs tests on a sport.<br />

- Does <strong>the</strong> modern <strong>Olympic</strong>s still ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> Pierre De Couberta<strong>in</strong>’s pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.<br />

- Case-studies of some major <strong>Olympic</strong> Icons and <strong>the</strong>ir physical attributes that assisted<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir success.<br />

- Prepare a case study to justify <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>clusion of a new sport <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong>s.<br />

- What are <strong>the</strong> social and political benefits of host<strong>in</strong>g major sport<strong>in</strong>g events.<br />

- Compare one of <strong>the</strong> sports venues you visited on <strong>the</strong> field trip and compare to similar<br />

venues <strong>in</strong> your home country.
