Arizona State University
The University
Arizona State University (ASU) was founded in 1885. With 58,000 students, it is
the fourth largest university in the U.S. and also one of the top-ranked public
research universities in the U.S. Most exchange students take courses on the
Tempe campus, but there are also three additional campuses around Phoenix.
ASU is well known for strong programs in Business, Journalism, Engineering,
Architecture, Biology, and more than a hundred other subject areas, from African
American studies to Studio Art.
The Surrounding Area
Tempe is a lively student city, right next to Phoenix which is the fifth largest city in
the U.S. Phoenix is located in the Upper Sonoran Desert and therefore has a
varying climate. Students can expect temperatures when they arrive in August to
be between 40-48 degrees during the day with about 55% humidity. Between
December and February temperatures will drop to approximately 13-20 degrees in
the day to as little as 2-4 degrees at night.
The Grand Canyon, Mexico, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco are only
a short drive or flight away.
Travel
ASU recommends that students buy a bike to get to and from class as Tempe has
a well-developed system of cycle paths. Inexpensive second-hand bikes can be
purchased near campus or through personal advertisements. Students can also
use the FLASH (Free Local Area Shuttle) which serves the ASU campus and
downtown Tempe every 10 minutes between 7am and 8pm weekdays (except
Friday and weekends until 6pm). ASU runs a shuttle service between its campuses
for approximately £1 single. There is an extensive bus network in the greater
Phoenix metropolitan area that has monthly passes for approximately £20.
Sport and Activities
Phoenix has professional teams for baseball, football, and basketball, and ASU
sports have a huge following, both at the collegiate and intramural level. Many
exchange students join university societies and clubs, including the Outdoors club
which introduces students to places like the Grand Canyon.
The cost of living varies from state to state, with most states being equal to living
in Leeds. California and Washington are probably the most expensive US
destinations. However, food and drink prices are generally much lower in the USA.
The Country: What Past Study Abroad Students Said
"Good, confidence-boosting experience. Great way to see the world and
experience opportunities that are not available back home. Fun!" - Daniel, UC-
Davis.
"Great experience. Good opportunity to travel and meet different people. Loved the
American culture, gotta experience the American way of partying and love of
football. Not to be missed" - Rachel, Penn State.
"You will never get another experience like this. To experience a completely
different way of studying and learning really broadens your mind. Plus, you meet a
lot of new people here, not just American - just enjoy it and make the most of it
while you are here" - Zoe, UC Santa Barbara.
