Apart from the optimisation of existing TSI, TDI and DSG technology for greater efficiency and lower emissions, development activities include the consistent im - ple mentation of alternative powertrains such as hybrid systems and natural gas engines (TSI EcoFuel). As a key element in the strategy, Volkswagen development departments are called upon to make full use of the potential offered by existing powertrain and fuel options at the same time as developing new solutions through to production readiness. This is a meaningful strategy in view of the fact that we will certainly have to rely on fossil fuels for many years to come. However, with the knowledge that it has devel - oped in the past and its consistent environmental management activities, Volkswagen is today ready to launch into the future with electric powertrains. BlueMotionTechnologies is the umbrella brand used by Volkswagen for all its efficient products and technologies. Under its sub-brands BlueMotion, BlueMotion Technology, BlueTDI and TSI EcoFuel, Volkswagen offers specific solutions combining environmental aspects, economics and driving pleasure. These labels cover a large number of smart innovations that help protect the environment. For example, the start-stop system and the SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment system save fuel and reduce emissions of CO2 and pollutants. Drive systems such as EcoFuel, allowing natural gas operation, BiFuel for LPG and Multi- Fuel, designed for operation on E85, offer alternatives to mono-fuel petrol and diesel engines. The efficient basic technologies TDI, TSI and DSG lay the foundations for these innovations. To this end, Volkswagen is pursuing a clearly defined plan for the introduction of electric vehicles. The first step is the production of a small test fleet of the Golf blue-e-motion in 2011. A year later, the Jetta Hybrid is to be launched in the USA. Then in 2013/2014, hybrid (Golf) and electric (Up!, Golf) versions of the Volkswagen brand’s highvolume models are due to take the market by storm.
