The environmental management system. In 1996, Volkswagen became the world’s first automaker to introduce its own environmental management system in the Technical Development department. The aim of the Volkswagen environmental management system is – as the official wording puts it – “the development of Volkswagen brand vehicles with continuously improved environmental properties” – all based on Volkswagen’s Environmental Policy. The guiding principle behind the Environmental Policy is for Volkswagen as a global provider of active mobility services to offer environmentally optimised vehicles built in an environmentally optimised production process. All activities and processes are designed for sustainability and to ease the load on the environment, as we strive to live up to our respon sibility towards customers, society and the environment. One key element of our Environmental Policy is to engage in an ongoing dialogue with our employees and our external stakeholders. 8 The environmental management system. Back in 1996 Volkswagen was already publishing information about its environmental management system and the successful initial environmental certification of its Technical Development department. So in 2010, Technical Development at Volkswagen and its environmental management efforts can already look back on a success story spanning 15 years. 1996: Environmental Protection in Product Development at Volkswagen The 1st certificate to ISO 14001 Preamble to the Volkswagen Environmental Policy: “Volkswagen develops, manufactures and markets motor vehicles worldwide with the aim of safeguarding personal mobility. The company accepts responsibility for the continuous improvement of the environmental compatibility of its products and for the increasingly conservative use of natural resources and energy, with due regard to economic aspects. Accordingly, the company makes environmentally efficient, advanced technology available worldwide and brings this technology to bear over the full life cycle of its products. At all its corporate locations, Volkswagen works hand-in-hand with society and policymakers to shape a development process that will bring sustainable social and ecological benefits.” The Environmental Policy also comprises seven principles relating to production, products and employees. The follow - ing principles apply to the products and their development:

In order to safeguard the long-term future of the company and enhance its competitive position, Volkswagen is research ing into and developing ecologically efficient products, processes and concepts for personal mobility.
