The Cooperative Gayo Linge (GLOC) was founded in August of 2008 during
the first general assembly meeting. The cooperative is made up of over 1,000
farmers from villages in the Bener Maeriah Regency. The members are not only
coffee farmers, but also traders and government leaders in local villages. The
cooperative uses the involvement of these government officials to encourage
other farmers to join. GLOC evolved from an organic coffee producer group
organized by Mr. Shalat, the current chairman. GLOC’s goals include training its
members to improve the quality of their product. All of the members are
traditional small-holder coffee producers, so this is their main or only source of
income. Because GLOC is a fairly new cooperative, they are still developing
strategies and plans for the future.
