Central Piurana de Cafetaleros (CEPICAFE) is an association of 90 smallscale
coffee cooperatives formed in 1995. Before they became Fair Trade
certified in 1996, the farmers sold their coffee to local merchants cheaply,
which caused many farmers to migrate to other regions in search of work.
The main goals of CEPICAFE are to improve the quality of life of coffeegrowing
families and create important contributions to the sustainable
development of the region. Using their Fair Trade revenue, the co-op has
created a scholarship program for member’s children; built a headquarters
with a warehouse, office space, and a cafe; built community centers in several
communities; purchased machinery and equipment to improve the efficiency
and quality of their product; provided trainings and technical assistance in
land management, irrigation, and organic farming methods; credit programs
and financing for members; and provided workshops for women in the
community about creating handicrafts to sell and leadership classes for
women workers.
