schedules get too hectic, is it
possible for the family to eat
out and stick to those
healthy habits you all
worked so hard to instill?
Absolutely.
When you can, plan your
meals, grocery shop ahead
of time and eat at home. But,
sometimes that’s just not
possible. In those cases, go
to restaurants where you
know healthier options are
available for kids as well as
adults.
There are some effective
strategies families can use to
m a k e s u r e e v e r y o n e ,
including the young ones,
stay on a healthy track while
eating out.
For instance, when ordering
at the restaurant, point out
the healthier menu items
and encourage the kids to
pick from those options.
McAlester, OK
Positive choices could
include grilled instead of
breaded and fried meats, a
side salad, fresh vegetables,
some fruit, low-fat milk or
water.
Or, since most children’s
meals come with an entrée,
side item and beverage, give
kids a chance to pick two
healthy items and one that is
less nutritious. For example,
t h e y c o u l d c h o o s e a
hamburger, apple slices and
a small soda or a grilled
chicken sandwich, small
fries and low-fat milk.
You can even take this a step
further and set a goal with
your kids to eventually
make all three choices
healthy. The real key to
making these strategies
w o r k i s p a r e n t s r o l e
modeling good choices
when eating out.
These positive strategies
b e c o m e e v e n m o r e
important in light of a
recently released report by
the nonprofit Center for
S c i e n c e i n t h e Pu b l i c
Interest (CSPI) dinging some
of the nation’s top chain
restaurants for offering kids’
menu items lacking in
nutritional value.
In the report, CSPI found the
majority of restaurants’
offerings had too many
calories, too much salt or fat
or not enough fruits and
v e g e t a b l e s . T h e
organization reviewed
a l m o s t 3 , 5 0 0 m e a l
possibilities from chain
r e s t a u r a n t s s u c h a s
Applebee’s, Denny’s, Dairy
Queen and Subway, and 97
percent fell well short of
CSPI nutrition standards for
4 to 8 year olds.
Watching the calories and
making good nutritional
choices hit close to home in
Oklahoma, with about one
in three youth and two out
of every three adults in the
state being overweight or
obese.
Children who are obese after
age 6 are 50 percent more
likely to be obese adults, and
that likelihood jumps to 80
percent if kids remain obese
into adolescence.
Besides health concerns
such as increased risk for
Type 2 diabetes, people who
are obese generally spend
nearly $1,500 more a year on
health care costs compared
to a person maintaining a
healthy weight.
For these reasons, it’s
critically important we help
kids learn to make healthy
food choices early in life.
918-576-1746
One way you can encourage
your kids is to expose them
to healthy foods and role
model healthy behaviors as
soon as older infants and
toddlers move from breast
milk or formula to solid
foods. For more information
quarter of 2015. It would
be the latest venture
allowing oil producers in
West Texas' Permian Basin
to
send their crude directly to
t h e U . S . G u l f C o a s t
refining belt.
Plains expects the 310mile
pipeline, with an
expected cost of up to $375
million, to carry sweet and
sour crude to Texas coast.
B y a v o i d i n g t h e o i l
transport hub in Cushing,
Okla., producers hope to
avoid the glut there that
has helped depress prices
on oil from Cushing.
Plains said it has entered
into a letter of intent with a
third party regarding a
long-term commitment for
a majority of the Cactus
pipeline's capacity and is
i n d i s c u s s i o n s w i t h
several potential shippers
for the remaining capacity.
The pipeline company did
not identify the company
w h i c h h a s m a d e t h e
c o m m i t m e n t o r t h e
companies with which
P l a i n s h a s h a d
negotiations.
Several companies have
been attracted by the idea
of delivering West Texas
crude directly to the
refineries that dot the U.S.
coast of Gulf of Mexico.
Sunoco Logistics Partners
started shipping such
crudes to the Houston area
on its Permian Express
p i p e l i n e i n t h e f i r s t
quarter. Around the same
time, Magellan Midstream
Pa r t n e r s L P ( M M P )
reversed its Longhorn
Express pipeline to ship
crude from the Permian
Basin to Houston.
Plains noted that crude oil
delivered through the
Cactus pipeline will have
access to rail-loading
c a p a c i t y a t t h e
Gardendale, Texas, station
operated by Plains All
American and access to
the Eagle Ford barge-dock
facility in the Corpus
Christi area.
The pipeline company
added that the Cactus
pipeline capacity can be
increased as demand
warrants.
Plains has experienced
s t r o n g d e m a n d a s i t
benefits from a huge boost
in the U.S. supply of
onshore oil.
The company, which
transports, stores and sells
oil, receives fees for many
of its services, so it is less
affected by the volatility of
oil and gas prices.
The Road to Awareness
“A gentleman on a bike with a sign "Cycling For Cancer" just
passed me, may I stop him and find out more about this"
asked Courtney Bigelow, sales associate for the Oklahoma
Bargain Journal to which I replied of course. Shortly after I
received a photo and a story that brought a tear and hope.
Flynn Donoho 54, began his journey to raise awareness after
losing friends and family to cancer. "I have covered sixteen
thousand miles and I am nine states short of all forty nine, I
started in Hunting Beach California and me and Diva are
headed to Little Rock Arkansas" Donoho said. Diva, Donoho's
canine companion has been by his side for the past eight
months, and six thousand miles. “Everyone in some way has
been effected by cancer, this is my way to salute, raise
awareness and help raise money for the American Cancer
Society”, Donoho said. “I have done several runs for Breast
cancer awareness and proudly wear the pink bra while
running, he added.
When asked how long he had been cycling for Cancer
Awareness, with a smile Donoho replied “three years.
I wish I had been on the road today and had the opportunity
to meet this man, and to share
a brief moment of greatness,
knowing I had just met an
angel on earth. Best wishes to
you Flynn Donoho and Diva!
Milk fever possible in beef cows
Minerals are critical to the
health and performance of
g r a z i n g l i v e s t o c k .
Deficiencies and excesses of
minerals in an animal's diet
can cause weight loss,
decreased reproductive
performance, and a variety of
nutritional disorders, says
K a l y n Wa t e r s , S D S U
Extension Cow/Calf Field
Specialist. She points to milk
fever as a metabolic issue that
can occur as a result of
mineral imbalances this time
of year.
"It is important to understand
v a r i o u s f a c t o r s t h a t
contribute to the potential for
these disorders and also to
u n d e r s t a n d a s s o c i a t e d
symptoms and treatments to
minimize losses," Waters
said.
Milk Fever
Milk fever is generally
a s s o c i a t e d w i t h h i g h -
producing dairy cattle;
however, it can also occur in
beef cattle Waters explains.
"Milk fever is a result of
c a l c i u m ) . M o s t f o r a g e
contains enough calcium to
which is around 40 grams per
day. However, a dramatic
i n c r e a s e i n c a l c i u m
requirements occurs with the
onset of lactation in the dam,
typically unable to be met
s i m p l y b y i n c r e a s i n g
Calcium intake," she said.
Colostrum which contains
2.0 to 2.3grams per liter of
calcium is partly to blame
explains Waters.
"Colostrum drains reserves in
the cow's blood stream;
which explains why milk
fever is typically seen in
mature cows as they have a
m u c h g r e a t e r r a t e o f
colostrum production."
Hypocalcaemia results in a
decrease in smooth muscle
function, decreasing rumen
and gastrointestinal tract
function and ultimately
resulting in a decrease in dry
decreases in uterine motility
Normal levels of calcium in
calcium is regulated by
parathyroid hormone (PTH),
which is produced by glands
in the neck. When blood
secondary hormone derived
from vitamin D in the kidney
stimulates the intestine to
Because of this, Waters
recommends that cattle
producers reduce calcium
intake late in gestation to
prime those systems and
increase their functionality
prior to the onset of lactation.
She admits however, it is
difficult to get calcium levels
in the diet low enough to
actually prevent milk fever.
Blood pH
Another factor that can affect
PTH do not act efficiently on
said.
Waters says adequate levels
of magnesium are also
important in the function of
t h e s e h o r m o n e s . I f
magnesium is deficient,
s u p p l y i n g m a g n e s i u m
chloride, magnesium sulfate,
or magnesium oxide in the
diet at a level of up to 0.4
percent can help acidify the
blood.
Excessive potassium in the
diet is one of the major
factors affecting blood pH
and potentially contributing
to milk fever. Some types of
forage may have excessively
high amounts of potassium
due to fertilization strategies
a n d a c c u m u l a t i o n o f
potassium in plant tissues.
Waters says that high levels
observed in lush green
grasses and alfalfa, while
corn silage, straw and small
grain forages tend to contain
lower levels.
If forages are suspect in milk
fever cases, potassium
concentration should be
determined by standard "wet
chemistry" lab analysis.
Tips For Grilling
Award Worthy Steaks
According to a recent study, 62 percent of Americans now
report grilling year-round. Take a tip from these backyard
grillers and pick up some steaks, break out the tools and
perfect your grilling techniques. These quick and easy tips
will help take your home-grilled steaks to the next level:
Temperature: Remove steaks from the refrigerator at least 30
minutes before grilling to allow the meat to rise to room
temperature.
• Marinade: Add robust flavor with a marinade that uses
ingredients you may already have in your kitchen, like A.1.
or Dr. Pepper.
Try this recipe from some experienced grillers who can really
take the heat:
San Antonio Sweet Soy Rib-eyes
Makes four servings
3 or 4 Choice rib-eye steaks
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup orange juice
1 cup soy sauce
3 Tbsp red wine or sherry vinegar
3 garlic cloves, minced
3 Tbsp Bolner’s Fiesta® Brand’s Uncle Chris’ Gourmet Steak
Seasoning
Place steaks in a large zip-top bag or shallow dish. Mix
pineapple and orange juices with the soy sauce, vinegar and
minced garlic. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1−2
hours, for a maximum of 12 hours. When steak is done
marinating, remove and pat dry, rubbing both sides with the
steak seasoning.
Prepare a charcoal grill for direct high heat (450−500
degrees F). Grill with the lid closed, turning once or twice,
until cooked to your desired doneness, 6 to 8 minutes for
medium rare. Let rest for 5 minutes.
THE FINANCIAL DOCTOR
Dear Financial Doctor,
Can I convert my Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA if I
don't have outside income?
Dear Get Set,
~ Get Set, Go
You are the perfect candidate for a Roth Conversion!
If you are in a net operating loss status or low/no
income, you will pay taxes only on the converted
portion of the Traditional IRA. However, you must
have the funds held outside of the Traditional IRA to
pay the taxes.
Please consult your CPA/financial planner and tax
advisor regarding your specific circumstances.
Good luck!
Here’s an idea: It is so expensive when you die! If you don’t
have life insurance to help cover the cost of a funeral or
cremation your family and friends are at risk of having to
cover the cost. Here’s an alternative: Ask your Universities
if they take donated bodies for science purposes. Sounds
horrible I know, but if you donate your body to science it’s
all taken care of for you. There are universities you can
contact for this purpose. Fill out all the necessary
paperwork, they give a donor card, when you pass away
they will come and pick up your body. Depending on what
your body is used for will depend on how long it will take to
get your ashes back to a loved one if desired. The cremation
is free for your donation. If you do not wish for your ashes to
be returned ask the university what they can do for you. At
one of the medical schools here in Texas loved ones ashes
are placed in the memorial gardens on campus. I for one
want to be cremated, I don’t believe in having to spend a
bunch of money on a funeral service, I’d rather my family
take the money and have a beer on me. This will be my
route! Think about it and call your local university and see
what they can do for you.
If you or someone you know has gotten a traffic ticket in
Haileyville on Hwy 270 you need to read and take action.
Oklahoma cities and towns ran the risk of losing traffic
ticket writing authority if more than 50 percent of their
operating revenue came from traffic citations. The state can
legally prevent cities from enforcing traffic laws on the hwy
if they are viewed as abusing that right. The DPS must have
approval from the state attorney general before designating
an area as special traffic-related enforcement. All
complaints against alleged speed traps must be filed with
the Okla Dept. of Public Safety in writing. Complaints
should be mailed to Okla. Dept. of Public Safety,P.O. Box
11415,Okla. City,Okla.,73136-0415. Online complaints
also can be filed at:www.dps.state.ok.us
I have a very simple question for all the readers. President
O'Bama is wanting to pass a law, the national registration
law of guns. My question is that if they cannot stop the
illegal flow of guns from across the Mexico border into the
United States, and if they cannot stop the illegal aliens from
coming across the border, how do they expect to stop all the
illegal guns sold during the day from the same place. There
is someone selling unregistered guns everyday. It is
unbelievable.
I have heard that the cost of a Carnival Cruise now less than
the cost of a Motel 6 each night. In my opinion, that is still
too much! Left out of Miami, it was the worst experience of
my life! Dirty, stinky and not making that mistake ever
again!
In the recent letter to the Editor: Last paragraph stated
“children’s drivers license”, it should have read “citizen’s
drivers license suspension”. We apologize for any
inconvenience.
Continue to pray for Boston and the entire nation.........
LETS PLAY SUDOKU
The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only
one condition: Each row, column and 3x3 box must contain
the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?
ANSWER TO THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ON PAGE 20
Our prayers go out to all who
have been effected by the
terrorist act in Boston, and pray
for answers in a swift manor.
What kind of sick individual
or group targets others to do
harm? If ever there was a time
to add more security it is now.
Stop downsizing our military!
Thank you
2 year old Spaniel cross
female that is so sweet
Has anyone else noticed the
down sizing of everything at
the grocery store? It’s seems
everything is smaller, or less
filled but the price has gotten higher. Seriously I mean it,
some things have gotten out of hand.
ALL ANIMALS LEAVE WITH CURRENT SHOTS,
STERILIZATION, MICROCHIP, DE-WORMED
AND DOGS ARE $20 AND CATS ARE $15.
This is for the man who dumped the kittens in the canal. I will
have you know that we pulled them out, they are being nursed
back to health and had we been able to catch you, we would
have gotten your license number and turned you into the
authorities.
I am appalled by the immediate reference by the media that a
non national was responsible for the recent attacks in Boston.
Please get your facts straight before you announce, your
actions make it very hard for “we” non nationals trying to llive
here in peace. Thank you.
I expect to hear the word "conversate" from the mouths of the
"I was like, ummm and everything like that and stuff"
generation. I find hearing the word "conversate" from the
mouths of businessmen, government professionals and
education officials is at best, disheartening and worrisome.
This word is not a commonly accepted substitute for
"converse," "talk" or "speak." Let us try to prevent the
American English language from swirling down the drain into
the abyss of imprecise and unacceptable jibber jabber.
I am also a truck driver, I read the Sound Off about non
working lights and have to agree, they need to be fixed but this
issue is nationwide and death happen daily due to this. I had a
near death experience today because of a non functioning
light in a small town in Arkansas! Wake up people!
Can you give of your Heart and of your
Tulsa Select Hotel on Skelly Drive, I have contacted the Tulsa
County Health Department! You promote online a beautiful
hotel, being there in person was a different story! I did not
expect to be in a roach infested room! Disgusted is a polite
term! Others were trying to check out that complained of
seeing the same problem! No one received a refund! I have
now went to all booking sites and read your reviews, I wish I
had done that prior to booking.
I am concerned, we have these people running round with
these bags and we have the 19th of April coming up, it
reminded me of the Alfred P. Murrah bombing and I am just
concerned after the bombing yesterday.
This is for the person whose son works at the convenience
store in Eufaula who had the drive off on the fuel. Tell your son
he needs to call the Better Business Bureau. I had this happen
to me a while back at a convenience store I worked at and it is
against the law for a store to make and employee pay for a gas
drive off because the store can write it off at the end of the year
as a loss. If he calls the BBB they will tell him the same thing
and they will tell him what to do.

CHALLENGE
WEEK 16
Does the thought
of bedtime feel
like a nightmare?
For many, this
time of night is
when the brain
By: Gina Stanley
really gets going. Worries or
nagging thoughts can keep
us up nights. Without
adequate rest, we have
trouble functioning the next
day and the vicious cycle
begins.
There is no magic pill – aside
from sleep aids, some of
which can become addictive
or less beneficial over time.
But there are tips to sleep
well.
1. Appreciate the Need for
Sleep – most of us will
sacrifice sleep over other
duties if we are pressed for
time. But not getting enough
sleep can cause a number of
issues including anxiety and
poor performance. Sleep
deprivation can increase
risks for hypertension,
stroke, diabetes and obesity.
2. Keep a Regular Sleep
Schedule – getting up and
going to bed at the same time
helps set your internal clock.
The best promoter of sleep
ability is being in sync with
your circadian rhythms.
3. Have a Pre-Sleep Routine
– the wind down time is
important to facilitating
good sleep. It’s hard to shut
the brain down from the
days worries so there needs
to be a definitive separation
o f d a y a n d n i g h t . B y
following a regular ritual
such as a bath before bed,
your body recognizes this
pattern and is prepared to
wind down and relax.
4. Write Down Your Worries
– at some point during the
day, jot down things that
might be troubling you. By
doing this, you take the
burden off your brain to rifle
through these thoughts
when you go to bed.
5. Create a Good Sleeping
Environment – darkness and
a moderate temperature
help facilitate relaxation.
6. See a Sleep Specialist – if
nothing seems to work, find
a s p e c i a l i s t w h o d o e s
C o g n i t i v e - b e h a v i o r a l
therapy (CBT). Many sleep
disorders can be treated
without medication.
Good sleep is necessary to
keep our bodies and minds
functioning at optimal
levels.
Too Much
Rain?
I never thought I’d be
complaining about too
much rain, especially after
drought conditions the past
two growing seasons. But
the rain this spring is getting
to be too much of a good
thing for gardeners. Since
we can no longer seem to
predict what nature has in
store for us, let’s take a look
at some simple things we
c a n d o t o p r o t e c t o u r
gardens and plants.
With heavy rainfall our
f l o w e r a n d v e g e t a b l e
gardens start to become a
breeding ground for fungus
and foliar diseases. Foliage
diseases flourish in damp
conditions. About 85% of
them are caused by fungi,
w h i c h p r o d u c e
reproductive spores that
allow the fungus to disperse
and reproduce. They can
then be carried for miles on
the wind.
A good fungus and disease
prevention program begins
with selecting resistant
plant varieties and planting
in locations with well
drained soils. Air flow is
another factor to consider;
the better the air can
circulate through the plants
the less prone they are to
fungus and foliar problems.
A good fungicide spray
program should also be
considered.
There are several organic
and non-organic fungicide
sprays on the market. Begin
COWS, BULLS & PAIRS
Compared to last week: Steer and heifer calves unevenly steady as no recent
comparable quality of offerings have been offered. Yearlings only slightly tested and near
steady. Quality much better this week than in recent weeks. Buyers extremely selective
toward quality and condition. Thin fleshed and long weaned offerings in best demand.
Heifers made up 54 percent of supply and improved local demand. Green grass and
improved stock water conditions improved local demand. Heifers made up 54 percent of
supply and cattle over 600 lbs about 21 percent of offerings. Slaughter cows 3.00-4.00
lower. Slaughter bulls not fully tested but lower undertone noted. Warm humid weather
caused cattle to fill up on water hurting dressing percentages. 385 cows and bulls sold
with about 50 percent going to packers.
ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) Your relationship appears to be stressed out and depleted. Don't let your emotions take over. Hobbies will be good for your
emotional well being.
TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) You may want to sign up for courses that will encourage you to have more confidence in yourself. Your irritability may drive
your loved ones crazy. Try to keep to yourself; work diligently on domestic chores and responsibilities.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You can get ahead if you work diligently behind the scenes. Overindulgence could cause problems for you with your loved
ones. Don't try to deal with important issues or make changes that will upset the apple cart.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) You could be drawn to events that concern children. You can make moves, but they won't be settling. Opportunities to learn
important information will surface through discussions with peers or seminars you attend.
LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Your family may not be pleased with your decisions. Taking on too much won't help the situation. You may not be happy if
members of your family are not pulling their weight.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Short trips may be tiring but rewarding. Opportunities to learn important information will surface through discussions with
peers or seminars you attend. You're best not to get involved in joint financial ventures.
LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Try to ease any disappointment by making amends. Your trendy style and unique way of doing things will entice new
acquaintances. A friendship might suffer if money becomes an issue.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Too much work and no play will not only result in fatigue and frustration but also loneliness, too. You may find that your
quick wit and charm will help you in obtaining allies. You could be your own worst enemy if you overreact to something you're told.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Don't get involved in expensive entertainment that involves gambling. You may find yourself caught in a triangle. You
may have a problem at work with a female coworker.
